      @zooooma I see no indication of anything even remotely about AA games, but more fantasy titles being worked on which is typical of WOTC. they choked the life out of Avalon Hill until it was dead. They could care less about anything remotely Historical and only deal in FANTASY. Nothing but a bunch of fat slobs with pimples rolling for hobgoblins, etc.

      @zooooma:

      Welcome back, friend!

      Thanks, zoooma….
      It all seems so  long ago…
      ( https://web.archive.org/web/20011214160853/http://www.wargamer.com:80/axisandallies/ )

      Maybe time for a thread about the ‘good old days’ of Axis and Allies and boardgaming in general on the internet :)
      Sorry to disrupt this AAZ forum but: thanks to wargamer.com, thanks to GeoCities (where I started), thanks to the various clubs, thanks to Peter Goudswaard (who?), thanks to David Jensen… Thanks to everyone older than me who kept the ‘brand’, the concept of Axis and Allies alive in the ‘dark’ 80s and 90s. When we could only dream about so many new games…
      OK, I will stop NOW :)

      @Booper:

      @zooooma:

      I am looking to save a few bucks, and it has occurred to me that if I buy the map and rule book I can play this version with chips and sculpts from my other sets.

      My question is:  Can the A&A: 1941 game board fit nicely into a 1942 (1st edition) game box?

      Cheers.

      Where are you going to buy the map only from?

      I can think of three places to find an A&A 1941 game board: 1) Ebay (which is dependent on people putting it up for sale; 2) HistoricalBoardGaming.com has that board for sale in the States (http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/Axis-Allies-Game-Boards_p_1969.html); and 3) Stratak.com has that board for sale in Europe (https://www.stratak.com/epages/63269889.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/63269889/Products/AHAXIS_1941_SB).

      So I would say that zooooma has some options in getting game boards for '41.

      @Midnight_Reaper:

      Lack of cash hurts both ways, though - it takes a while to build a navy at 12 IPCs, whether it’s the UK or Germany rebuilding their fleet from the first turn battles.

      Lack of cash hurts both ways, but what I was getting at, building a fleet from nothing (for Germany) is very expensive and easy to spot coming, while defending England from a Sea Lion doesn’t require a fleet, it only requires far cheaper ground units (a bunch of English soldiers is a lot cheaper than trying to build a big German fleet)… it’s far easier for England to build infantry than for Germany to build a fleet with capital ships transports AND the ground troops to fill the transports, when all England has to do is build ground troops to defend against Sea Lion… yes, Britain will need to rebuild their fleet at some point from initial losses, but if Germany is trying to go Sea Lion before Moscow in 1941 (which was the initial question I believe), the money situation far favors the UK over Germany… unless the UK player is just daft and doesn’t defend England while Germany builds a fleet. As zooma pointed out, the more realistic method for the Axis to win would be to eliminate Russia first, then, using the funds from a dead Russia, build a fleet to attack the western allies.

      I’ve played this game a few more times and I’ve come to the conclusion that - contrary to what I expected - the Axis player’s best bet to win the short game is to invade North America, starting in Alaska, and march to Washington. Japan needs to grab some cash and some factories, either from Asia (India and Siberia) and / or the Pacific (Australia, et al) and then start up the invasion fleet. If the US has focused on Germany for the first part of the game, they may have their hands full beating back “Dai Nippon Teikoku”…

      1st edition had an optional rule that German subs take 3 IPCs in a convoy raid instead of 2.

      Ah ok, indeed.

      I was thinking about another (temporarily discussed) rule during Alpha-development towards second edition rules,
      that increased all subs convoy raiding IPC-reduction to 3 when the “Super Subs” technology had been achieved.

      My aunt’s first husband (before I was born) was shot down and killed in a bombing raid over Germany.  I had two uncles that served in WWII - unscathed, thankfully.  My mom’s folks moved to Canada from Poland in the 20s, but during WWI it was German occupied so granddad was forced to fight for the Germans.  Growing up my folks has so many friends who were WWII vets, including one guy with a plate in his head after the cockpit of his Flying Tiger got shot off over China.  My dad came of age just a few months after the nukes dropped on Japan, so he was lucky.

      @ShrimpBoatChef:

      Earlier in the thread read that 42.2 plays in under 5 hours. That is cool to hear.  We play Global 40 2nd all the time. Fast games in 5 hours or all day for the win sometimes.  Might have to check out the smaller/faster board.

      Ya… I’d put 1941 at about 3 hours playtime, and 4-to-5 sounds about right for 1942.2 (depending on the experience of the players).

      The differences between 1942 first edition and second edition are:

      different territories different borders different sea zones different IPC different set ups (partially) different rules different sculpts

      So, 1942.2ed is NOT just the same game as 1942.1ed, but a completely different game! “Second Edition” in this context does not mean “Newer production line of the same product with the same content” (e.g like the uncountable versions of monopoly), it’s more or less a completely new game.

      In my current game, I will use the Aussies to take the Caroline islands so the united states can then stage their airforce on the island be closer to the action quicker. ANZAC also has an aircraft carrier so combined with the us fleet that will be arriving, tha Japanese will be nervous.
