    • RE: Has 42.2 been superseded by Anniversary?

      42 2nd edition offers AAAs as well as a more viable KJF strategy.

      It’s a cheaper game that a lot more people already own.  I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

    • RE: Star Wars Rebellion

      I don’t plan to buy the expansion (and I’m an expansion whore, so this is a big deal).

      I like the new ships, but I really dislike the cinematic combat (and I really liked the interaction between dice and tactic cards in the original system).

      I do like the new ships and green dice, but the leaders - while I don’t dislike them - only serve to dilute our chances of recruiting each of the classic characters which I like a lot more.

    • RE: The low income rates make luck a much bigger factor in this version

      I haven’t played 1941 yet, but I think the lack of purchasing should make it a bit like a tactical minis game on a global map.
      I can see how this would add a lot of luck, but I can’t think of any other way to shorten the game without upsetting the balance.

      @Baron:

      And for learning curve, this unit should have been part of 1941.
      This unit is so essential for other games.

      Artillery pieces was one of the better innovations over the history of this game.  That said, the Gamemaster Series edition predated artillery but was still (at the time) considered the best game in it’s class.  So I don’t think artillery are essential in a beginners edition.

    • RE: Game Balance & Capturing Capitols

      Thanks for the replies guys - great discussion.

      The impression I get is that the fast rules will either have no effect or else help the Allies:

      • The Axis will virtually never take London or Washington without taking out Moscow first to fund the campaign.

      • The Allies can now win by occupying a single capitol even in a bad position.
        eg, Germany controls Moscow and controls (or is about to capture) London, but the Allies still win if USA occupy Tokyo

      Looks like fun.  I’m going to buy the rule book and board online and stick them in my Spring 1942 box as a variant.  Mostly for converting new players, but I could see jamming 1941 with a veteran player when we have just a couple hours to kill.

      Makes it hard for the Axis to harass NA though.

      Does this EVER happen??

      I’ve yet to play 2nd edition.

      But if we are talking about new players it could very well come up.

      @Bob77:

      Unless you plan on printing the map any way or have a really cheap source on printing, you wont save money. The printed map will cost more then the game.

      HBG is selling the map + rules for $5.  Cheapest I can find the game for is $15.99.  Also shipping to Canada should be cheaper for just a board.

      I know it’s not a lot of money, but I’ve been off work with an injury and very broke.  I’m healing nicely and will be back to work soon, but I’ll be catching up for a long time and (sadly) $10-$20 makes a difference.

      @Bob77:

      40"26" game board

      I need to know the dimensions when folded if I plan to try to fit it into another A&A box.

    • Board Size?

      I am looking to save a few bucks, and it has occurred to me that if I buy the map and rule book (plus a few sculpts for the AAAs) I can play this version with chips and minis from my other sets.

      My question is:  Can the 1942 2nd edition game board fit nicely into a 1942 1st edition game box?

      Cheers.

    • RE: 1941 FAQ

      Unless I am missing something, there is no clause for owning your own capitols in order to win.

      • So in theory if Russia capture Germany but Japan takes Russia out the same round, the Allies still win at the end of Japans turn (short game rules)?

      • Or, playing for standard victory, if England captures Germany, but Germany occupies Russia and Japan captures USA, This is an Axis victory?

      Is this correct?

      @Krieghund:

      @P@nther:

      So the

      Soviet-Japanese Non-aggression Pact: Neither the Soviet Union nor Japan may
      attack territories controlled by the other until either Germany or Russia has
      been captured by an enemy power.

      did not make it to the official FAQ obviously.

      Nope.  Larry decided it was too much complication for an introductory game.

      That might have been an interesting optional rule.  New players typically skip optional rules, so I think that would have been okay.

      Would such a rule mitigate the Axis advantage, or even shift the balance to the favour the Allies?

    • Game Balance & Capturing Capitols

      Hello.  I’m looking forward to trying this version, but have some questions:

      1 - Is the “Optional Shorter Game” balanced (1 captured capitol to win).

      I figure this version is probably balanced if it is nearly impossible for either side to recover from the loss of any capitol.

      2 - Is Operation Sea Lion viable in this version?

      That is, can it be done at all (given reasonable Allied play)?  Also, if so, can the Axis still win the war if Germany does take England?

      Cheers!

    • RE: Sealion defense after J1 DOW?

      Sorry I haven’t voted - but I haven’t played 2nd edition yet so I don’t have an informed opinion.

      At the very least I would make sure Germany can’t get in too cheaply.  Those extra German IPCs + the loss of a British build should come at a cost; even if the US can liberate right away.

    • RE: Sealion defense after J1 DOW?

      @eames57:

      I suppose this question does presuppose that America used its turn to prepare for the possibility of needing to liberate  London, like buying a couple of transports and a carrier and bringing a couple ships from SanFran to the Mexican Gulf.

      I don’t think so.
      I believe the scenario is England’s first turn after a Japanese DoW.  England wants to know to what extent they should prepare homeland defense.

      I am assuming that this is an OBB game (no bidding)?

    • RE: Is there currently an average bid(or even a bid) in G40 2nd edition

      @Gargantua:

      It’s not a “good idea” its a concept.  To give the allies a larger more staggered bid over time.

      So we are not so much talking about a “bidding process”, but rather others ways to balance the game.

      It’s sort of a neat idea - player 1 puts any amount of extra Allied units onto the board, then player 2 chooses their side.
      This is a little more dynamic, because the equalizer can be a higher monetary amount but spent less efficiently.

      I liked this idea with the NAs in Revised.  You select which NAs are to be in play (any combination), and I choose which side I want (or vice-versa).  I’m sad that NAs were dropped from the line.

      How is it a good idea to put ground units in North America when they could go to Russia or The Commonwealth instead?

      I’m confused here.  Are people actually bidding in the hundreds?

      Has the bidding system changed since the AAMC?

      @Karl7:

      one bid that has always intrigued me was 100 inf for US at start.

      But how can you bid 300 IPCs and win the auction?
