    • RE: After Three Games of Global

      @rockrobinoff:

      Simply put, we are running out of ideas for Germany/Italy. Zooooma has worked out Sea Lion in detail, and has concluded that Sea Lion is only worth it if UK skimps enough on defense.

      Whoa!

      We are just scratching the surface of ideas (I really don’t have much time foe A&A).  I’m still exploring Sea Lion in conjunction with A Japanese invasion of America.  My Mediteranean game plan has been neglected  - I’ve only just clued in to a decent Axis start there.  And I’ve devoted next to zero thought about solid Barbarossa play.

      Our last second game involved a half baked unconventional strategy on my part that I was really just feeling out.  I abandoned this last game because I simply didn’t have time to adjust for your preemptive response to said strategy.  So I played Barabrossa which I hadn’t thought about much at all.

      @RedHunter:

      Maybe you should have played it out another turn or 2. Germany and Japan might have been able to capture Moscow. But then it appeared that they would lose Germany so…

      @rockrobinoff:

      Germany and Japan very well might of yeah, but Germany was falling… and the allies would inherit the russian money right back too.

      I thought Germany was expected to hold or at least one more turn?  hence our discussion o the American presence in Europe and it’s impact against Germany over the next two or three rounds.

      Quiting when we did also enabled me to sleep two solid hours preceding my ten hour labourious graveyard shift.  If it had been much earlier, I’m sure we would have played to at least the battle of Moscow.

      Nice video man  :-D

      You need extra pieces though, I saw way too many chips (I hate chips!). The last scene was a hot mess I couldn’t tell what was where or what was going on  :lol:

      Perhaps a larger television?

      I forgot about ANZAC in Egypt - I don’t think we’ve remembered that since game one!

    • RE: Need help forming strategy: Operation Penta-"gone". When US builds KIF?

      @JamesAleman:

      Anyway, in Global, unless someone sees this coming, the air base in Soviet Far East, and the German transports in Iceland may not tip off the US that Alberta is the goal. Again, even if not going after the U.S., this “appears” to be the fastest way to get to the Atlantic in Global.

      If they do see it coming, USA needs to build enough ground forces to blow up Alberta (you can land three German units plus an aa there), as well as hold Western from a potential J3 assault (parking the bulk of the IJN in sz12 prevents US navy from blocking Hawaii or California).  They also want to prevent (or beat back) a J4 landing in Panama, lest the IJN reach the Atlantic.

      I think USA might have their hands full even if you tell them your plan.

      @JamesAlemanlink=topic=20678.msg703769#msg703769date=1287728978:

      Personally, I see more UK-India players, with the money they have from not being attacked, declare war on Japan UK2 just to liberate Yunnan for China, since they go before China and can thus assure the Burma road N/O. It would be a vary cautious UK player that waits while China fights Japan.

      In my games India focuses on Africa and the Mediterranean.  So while they might be happy to liberate Yunnan, they may not have the resources in that area.  It’s true though, the only consequences of a UK2 DOW are limited to whatever Japan can do to UK on J3.  Allies might not see flying over BC as a threat.

    • RE: Need help forming strategy: Operation Penta-"gone". When US builds KIF?

      @JamesAleman:

      The nice thing about seizing Alberta turn G3 (in a US/USSR 3 turn neutral plan), it permits the Japanese air force to get to the Atlantic faster than any other route.

      I thus plan on keeping this as part of any London first Axis plan,

      This is brilliant.  Call it Kill Russia Last.

      You don’t need to The Commonwealth to declare war for you.  Go ahead and declare J3 in order to fly over BC.  (incidentally, I think you should land  2 infantry, one tank, and on anti air craft gun to Alberta G3).  Unless America has bought heavy ground units, you can hold Alberta.

      If America does build ground troops, You can still hold UK for some time (though I haven’t decided if this is worth the price).  If This draws enough resources to let Japan into Panama J4 (and through J5), it will be a long time before The US establishes any European campaigns.  The US needs to Threaten Alberta turn three, and defend East US from Japan, and hold Panama (or produce a counter assault).

      KRL might just work even if USA sees it coming.  I haven’t had time to really work out a proper response for US, but if you can take England and hold USA off for several turns, The Axis may have a shot.  German survivors in UK  can move to Canada G4 to aid the Japanese, or move back to West Germany to protect against Russia.

      @JamesAleman:

      I realize it is possible (although unlikely at first) for the UK to stage 2 infantry and 1 armor in Alberta by turn 2. Using Ontario and Quebec starting forces. This should be clear by turn G2.

      Let them.  Attack it with 2 tans and two infantry - Quebec can wait.

    • RE: Do you use "ALPHA SENARIO" set-up for Global 1940?

      @kcdzim:

      But if you play enough to find a way to break the game OOB like the J3 crush, then you SHOULD use the Alpha so can you help fix it.

      I don’t believe J3 India crush does break Global 1940.  I tend to play OOB plus FAQ, Errata, and various official optional rules.  I never play house rules.  I do play enough to find things like the J3 crush in Pacific 1940.

      OOB I find Global 1940 the most dynamic and awesome A&A game ever.  I understand wanting a second set-up for Pacific, but I’m not convinced Global is broken.  I therefore don’t have a desire to fix it.

    • RE: Difference from revised?
      • Nine cities to win - no major/minor/total.

      • Bombers cost 12IPCs.  CVs cost 14; less than in AA50.

      • No National Advantages.

      • Overland units may retreat from amphibious assault.

      • Central US touches sz10.

      @Granada:

      For me, this the thing. I really belive the V4 is definitive AAA just because the fact it really is balanced.

      AA42 is the fifth version.  Global 1940 might yet be balanced too!

      @kcdzim:

      But do you use the Errata’d setup, which replaces the OOB setup and was officially released months ago to correct the setup errors that were made (ANZAC only has one minor factory, Philippines has a naval base and an airbase)?

      Absolutely - I play with all official errata and FAQ.  That’s why I want to see alpha as an option (like LHTR for revised) rather than a strict errata.

    • RE: Do you use "ALPHA SENARIO" set-up for Global 1940?

      No, and I don’t see the draw.  Global 1940 OOB has vast uncharted opportunities and potential strategies.  I am fascinated by it.  And I don’t care what anybody says about balance yet.  Often the side with the true advantage has a less prosaic optimal strategy.  That is we might discover that the Axis, given very precise and specific play, can beat the Allies the majority of the time.

      Also, I think the 28 strong Japanese air force is cool!  They are powerful, but there are too many to use efficiently against Just China and Eastern Russia.  They are a long flight from Europe, and you can’t attack India or America with them without accelerating the Allied war effort.

      I hope Alpha is presented as an optional variant, not an errata replacing OOB.

    • RE: The Ultimate Axis and Allies Global 1940 Video of ALL TIME

      @Pelanderfunk:

      I like the early attacks against the US, but it looks like Russia was becoming a problem.

      The attacks against America were half baked - I was still at the drawing board but jumped in anyway.

      A bigger problem than Russia is UK in Africa, the Mediterranean, and South East Europe.  If Italy were an asset to Europe and not a liability, I think I could deal with the Russians.  In fact, if I could lock UK out of the Med (without extra effort from Japan or Germany) I would combine the Japanese North American campaign with Sea Lion and be sitting pretty.

      What to do about that pesky Med…

      @JamesAleman:

      [[i]I know, I know, an experienced player would never fall for it, or so I will be told this often]

      Yeah, I think I stressed this point in your “dusting Off OH” thread, as well as your old revised thread.  I now apologise.    If nothing else, exploring a sucker mate strategy might turn out to yield a more solid strategy than you first thought, or be a real nuisance for your opponent to properly protect themselves against.

      Eventually I’d like to join your Penta-gone think tank, but right now I’m working on another plan (which also involves pressuring or even invading North America).  Currently I barely have time for either.

      Have you had trouble with the Italians?  I don’t think I could keep transports alive long enough to leave the Med.

      @JamesAleman:

      Also, would you trade Germany for the US in a Global game? [if it came down to it]

      If Germany occupied England and Japan was the one to capture Washington, I’d give it try!

    • RE: Can't win a Global game with Sea Lion

      @Blitchga:

      @zooooma:

      @Blitchga:

      Sea Lion is only a viable strategy from what I have seen if UK does not take the threat seriously and does not therefor defend its capital with enough and does not bring the carrier and destroyer from Morocco back to the North Atlantic.

      Or perhaps if USA is busy in the Pacific?

      True, but then you have the game already because you are playing allies who are unsure of how to keep the grand strategy in mind.

      If Japan could force America into the Pacific, do you thing Germany and Italy could hold out against just Russia and colonial UK post Sea Lion?

    • RE: UK Indian Ocean Fleet Strategy, the end of Japans dominance

      @calvinhobbesliker:

      Not too weak. OOB, they’re too strong with 28 planes and 3 transports. Both sides lost the same number of planes and transports, and Japan got 3 extra inf, while India got 2.

      you find the Axis too strong in Global?  I like to reserve judgment this early on, but so far I’m finding the Axis quite challenging.

      On topic, this strategy would leave Italy unmolested and invite a heavy India crush -  filling the coffers with a big bounty for Japan.  I’d be disinclined myself, but do let us know how it goes.

    • Official optional rules?

      I’ve been wondering if the alpha set up will be an errata in the FAQ or an option in the FAQ.  Also, I recall hearing about a Larry Harris endorsed house rule project.  Could this potentially make a splash in the FAQ too?  I liked that the AA50 FAQ included two optional rules, and I’d just love to see some for 1940.
