RE: I'm forgetten…After Battle o.t. Bulge Hitler thought...?
I agree IL, that is just Hitler’s F’d up way of thinking. However, if in 41 he did not have to cover his ass in france (or even the token troops in N Africa, Norway, etc)… would the 6th army have been encircled if a few 100,000 german soldiers were there covering the flanks instead of a bunch of crap Romanian troops? A one on one war with Russia (which is what Hitler wanted) would have probably been a German victory (at that point).
Hitler was a corporal. It shows with how he led his military. His generals were the reason Germany went so far. The tactics are still used, unless you think the “hail marry pass” was not a blitz.
Many times Hitler went too far, but his generals provided him “miracles” which fed his ego that he was a great military comander. Eventualy the miracle well went dry and Germany lost the war.

RE: Bye!
Well, that sucks. Chen, you may have been a big pain in the but from time to time, but damn did if I not love our debates.
To your credit, you were right half the time. The times when you agreed with me :-D

RE: I'm forgetten…After Battle o.t. Bulge Hitler thought...?
I agree with the above, but would also add that if (and they were not going to be able to do this) they could do a repeat of the 41 blitz through france and not allow another Dunkirk that it would free up troops to fight the Russians on the Eastern Front. At that point the Russians could have won the war w/o the English/Americans, but all this is counterfactual history anyway.

RE: How could Germany have won the war?
Oh god, Hitler’s F ups? I can write a book on them, and many have. Anyone with a passing knowledge of WW2 (which i think most of you have posting on this board) would know them. To make it short (both ends of the war), why attack in 39… and why throw away your last remaining assets in the Bulge?
Hitler knew what a corporal would know as far as tactics go, and that is the rank he achieved when he fought in WW1. The gains that Germany got early in the war (and why they were able to fight such a great def. battle after 42) were because of people like Rommel, kesserling, guadarian, and many others.
All that has to be said about Hilter running the military is that when the Normandy landings were happening, no one wanted to wake up good ole adolf because it was too early. 1000s of Germans were dying, but they died it for a good cause, Hitler needed his sleep.

RE: How could Germany have won the war?
ok, take a breather and think of your history.
Winter of 41 the Russians stopped the assualt on Moscow. At the same time they had encircled German forces. The German airforce did supply them by air. You all know the standard Hitler order (across the board), no retreat. Remember the Russian winter offensive in 41? It did not break Germany, but why do you think that was so? Do your research, it was an orderly retreat (supplied from the air while encircled).
The difference between the 2 scenerios is that in 41 it was a broad front, the Russians could not contest the air over so much territory (not to mention their AF was destroyed on the ground, and obsolete to boot). In 42 the Russians could stop resupply. They focused on Stalingrad as their “big trap”, and it worked.
Am I wrong in this? To the poster who said they barely got any supplies into staingrad… how many German planes were shot down trying to? How many were JU52s were shot down in 41? That says it all.

RE: Jennifer's Icon
I was going for ultra geek with the Zima thing… but good to know you don’t. Just say no.
I get what you are saying Jen, but at the same time I have to call BS. If I were to post a picture of me (when I was younger) I would have to pick the one where I am sprawled out on the floor drunk new years eve 90. My friends messed with me and set up the pic. It’s funny as hell, and it’s me at my worst, but I hardly think it would cause females to pay attention “DAMN IS HE HOT PASSED OUT LIKE THAT!” lol
Ya could have had a pic of you while you were preg. One when you got married. Hell, one of you sprawled out on the ground like me. Why the swimsuit pic? I think jerm has one of him and his kid, why not something like that?

RE: Jennifer's Icon
Jen,
Nice boobs and butt! Wanna have a long erotic night of hot A&A action? You bring the game, I will bring the chips and zima!
(that was sarcasm btw - except the nice boobs and but part)
I avoided this thread for a while, cuz I knew it would be a bunch of geeks drooling over a pretty girl. Not to call names, I am a fellow geek (I started playing the game at 13 when it came out). But outside of that what is the point of having an ongoing post about how attractive Jen is? I understand that it is cool she plays the game, and is also attractive. But I don’t go to this forum to flirt or drool over a picture. I come to talk about the game, and some of the political stuff.
Jen, with that in mind I would like to ask you a question (this is obviously not a flirting/drooling thing because of the question, and at the same time it is not meant to be an attack). What was the point of posting your picture? You are not a dumb person, this is an A&A board and I think you knew the response you would get (you also posted a picture you thought was you at your best).
Me and you see eye to eye on a lot of things, and posting your picture does not change how I view you (other than why you did it). When you are in an atmosphere like this forum, you had to know you would get the responses you have gotten. Most males on this forum will treat your arguments differently because of the picture (don’t argue with the pretty girl).
One of the best things about forums is that they are faceless. I can’t tell you how many times (in real life) I have had to listen to some girl ramble on about her shoes, the mall, or how she aspires to one day be a fashion designer because she was attractive and I wanted something. It’s the game males/females play, so be it. Why bring it here?

RE: How could Germany have won the war?
@88:
Forgive this for being simplistic.
The successful assassination of Hitler early in the war would have done wonders for the Reich.
Less economy/ trains tied up in the ‘final solution’.
Liberation of eastern Europe/ White Russia/ Ukraine rather than war of extermination against the ‘inferior’ slavic peoples. This would have lead to much less partisan activity behind the lines, and would have provided easier access to food/ shelter/ conscripts etc.- rather than a population that quickly learned it had to resist or be killed.
Sober choices regarding Stalingrad/ Kursk/ Battle of the Bulge etc. These battles cost the Wehrmacht hundreds of thousands of lives and thousands of armored vehicles/ artillery/ aircraft. Each loss was another broken vertabrae in Germany’s back. All of them were the result of Hitler’s personal hubris. Stalingrad could have been bypassed- instead the entire 6th Army was consumed and marked the official turning point on the East Front and the war in general. Kursk was pure stubbornness- the Red Army had over 10,000 pieces of artillery prepared, massive anti-tank earthworks, and outnumbered the German armor by over 2 -1, and knowing this Hitler still ordered Operation Citadel to continue. What a dufus.
Less resources spent on ‘wonder’ weapons and V1 &2 (Vengeance) rockets. Negligible effect on the war, large amount of brain power and resources wasted. Again, this was personal and not rational.
As said earlier in this thread, winter clothing for the start of Barbarossa.
Implementation of total war economy. Hitler insisted on having life in the Reich stay as normal as possible. Oops. In the meantime Russian women were flying Yaks and driving T-34s, American women were working their asses off on assembly lines producing Shermans, and all the while German women were getting busy trying to push out as many aryan babies as possible. Another mistake.
Allowing Goering to lose focus on the prize during the Battle of Britain. The RAF was exhausted and all but defeated. A few stray bombs fell on London by mistake, and the next thing you know the Luftwaffe is going after cities rather than the battered British air force. This break allowed them to recoup, and Britain remained alive and eventually became the staging ground for D-Day.
There are a bunch more.
If Hitler had been offed, and his generals had taken control of the state, Germany would have avoided myriad disasters and most likely would have kicked in Russia’s door.
Thank god all the assassination attempts failed.
Factualy, everything you said is true. But you are missing one HUGE point. If there was no Hitler, there would have been no war. His generals from day 1 were saying not to attack Poland (even b4 the war they were telling him not to get too aggresive politicaly). Hitler demanded miracles from the german army early on, and for the most part they delivered. Stalingrad… while it was a huge mistake German forces were encircled before (winter of 41) and goering did supply them by air. So while it was stupid to keep his troops in Stalingrad, goering did make good on the promise of doing it in 41. So Hitler figured he could do it again (he was corporal Hitler, There is a huge diff between the 2 situations).
Germany not having a war time economy? Good point, but do you remember one BIG reason Germany lost WW1? Because people had to go w/o. Hitler wanted to keep the people happy, and not re-live the same situation of WW1. It actualy says something about Hitler’s bullshit mindset. The Jews lost Germany WW1, but he knew all along (somewhere in his twisted mind) that the German people had enough by 1918 (even the non jews shock).
Can’t blame the German people, becaue they are all so aryan… how could they do something wrong? It had to be those damn jews.

RE: Greatest Find in WW2 History!
Germany should of had “battle of Jutland 2” but this time having the entire German airforce cover the small German Navy. I think they would have massacred them. And if England did not take the bait of sending out their fleet to stop em… BOOM BOOM BOOM on those radar installations and other key objectives(ports, air bases, whatever, but specificaly the radar stations. May be hard for a plane to hit, but would be easy as hell for naval guns to go after). If they did confront the germans, they would have been wiped out IMO.

RE: Am I the Only One?
“Thus Spoke Zarathustra” I read in college IL. The part that has been burned into my memmory (may not be an exact quote).
“Beware the so called sagely man who comes limping into the light. Because he has learned too quickly, and the good things not at all”. Than a few sentences later “It would be better if he had not been born at all”.

RE: Am I the Only One?
@ncscswitch:
Books…
#1 by a mile has to be Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
State of Fear by Crichton is probably also on my influential list.
And I would also have to add (forgive me…)
To Ride a Silver Broomstick by Silver Ravenwolf. Pure trash, but it started my journey beyond agnosticism…Movies…
Patton. It is just one of those movies that, upon watching it, makes you feel ready to conquer the world.
Fahrenheit 451. Obvious reasons.
Andromeda Strain. What science does not know CAN kill you…(I am pretty sure you can take a joke switch)
I figured yours would be:
“The kama sutra”
“My life as a sexual deviant” by the marqi de sad (sp)?I am in a goofy mood, had to make fun

RE: Greatest Find in WW2 History!
Well, it was tech “built”, or at least the hull was. The german Navy was planning on war for 1944, not 39. They had plans for 100s more subs and at least a dozen more tirpitz/bismark class Battleships along with many more ships (destroyers, cruisers, etc). The Graff Zep was going to be the first. When war came it went on the back burner to the larger land war. The Germans for a short time tried to complete her after France fell, but when Hitler started eyeing Russia it got mothballed again.
Now the true WW2 geek question. Did Germany have any planes that could have flown on it w/o large modifications? I am not sure on the structual design of the BF 109, FW190, JU87 (did Germany have a torpedo plane?) Or were they designing other planes specificaly to be on a carrier?
Also, how big was this thing anyway. I read a book about the German Navy 20 years ago so my memmory is foggy. How to it match up to an essex class carrier?
Fun side note as far as this whole thing goes (learned it from WW2 mag). The japs and germs were exchanging tech secrets in 42 (from the few subs who were able to cross the globe and not get destroyed). The Germans had the blueprints to the Akagi (and the japs got rocket and jet tech in the exchange).

RE: Are civilians "insane" to military men and women?
Heh, funny stuff jen.
I remember during basic I was late coming out to formation in the morning. Not really late, more that I did not check myself over before going. I was standing in formation and the Drill srg. looked down and said “ZOOEY! WHY IS YOUR CARGO POCKET UNBUTTONED?!”
“I don’t know drill srg.!”
“Zooey, if I could kick you I wouldn’t have to drink so much at night!”
I laughed, and he nearly PT’d me to death.

RE: Are civilians "insane" to military men and women?
Don’t know if it is a “civilian” thing. Some people are just plain stupid. An example:
http://www.kstp.com/article/stories/S17494.html?cat=1
There are certain things that they are not going to get. I never served, but was in ROTC and had basic training and officer training in college, so I have SOME idea (although not much, admittedly). But when I got back from basic my family thought they turned me into a savage from my new eating manners. No matter how large the meal, I had it eaten in about 2 minutes. On the plane back I remember I stopped at a Burger King at the airport, cuz I REALLY wanted a double whopper. Asked me if I wanted a drink with that, my respose was Hooh!
It’s a different life, and hard to explain to people who have never been exposed to it.
As for myself, I never understood why officers were kids right out of college who did not have clue 1 about how to run a platoon(in RL)… but they were in charge. The PSG took orders from a kid 10 years (on average) younger than him. Why the hell isn’t the PSG in charge? I mean really, screw the degree. The experience of the PSG out wieghs some kid’s degree in pottery (or whatever).
When I became part of it, it made sense. The PSG genuinely enjoys his job, and the day to day running of the platoon is his resp (among one of his resp. is to train some 2nd looey on his job).

RE: Africa
I have played this game since 85 and not in one game have the Axis lost while still holding Africa. They have had Africa, than lost it to the allies, than lost. But there has been no game where the Axis lose still holding onto (and 99% even just fighting in) Africa.
If all 3 powers hit Germany and ignore Japan the game turns into one of surivival and delay for Germany, until the Japs can take out Russia.
The best buy for Germany are planes. They can give you strength on both land and sea. They allow you to hit the allies where they are weakest, and that is the key for Axis victory in this game.

RE: Africa
Unless you destroy the German AF the threat to Southern is min.
Planes in Western will hit open transports either in southern or off the coast of Algeria. Unless you build enough ships to protect both sea squares, which is great… a lot of IPC for very little effect IMO. The one off move into Southern will net you a few IPC for that turn, at which time the German ground forces will smash whatever you land in Southern, while the AF will be destroying transports you can not protect. It does Divert (not destroy) a turns worth of buying against the Russians, but does little else to hurt Germany. Further this disrupts the US flow of troops into Africa and somewhere in the future Japan can look forward to a turn of no US reinforcements.
