      @F_alk:

      @Major:

      guns can kill people, there fore people will think more of guns than other normal day things that kill. more people died from car related incidences, does that mean we should take all cars away too, i wonder what the gun hating people of the world would say if that was thrown on the table?

      “gun hating people of the world” is pure polemic and useless.
      I have the grace to still answer your question, even though that comment made me much less inclined to do so, and even though it had been answered several times before the hacking of the forum.

      guns are designed to kill
      cars are designed to bring you from one place to the other.
      They differ in their purpose. One is functioning perfectly when it kills, the other one malfunctions when it kills.

      Knives are designed to cut.  But they kill too, don’t they?

      As far as the gun thing goes.  My great grandfather’s shotgun is old as hell.  And I would sooner set my home on fire than fire the damn thing right now (dangerous).  However, living in the south I have met some people really intrested in my great grandfather’s gun.  All I know of it was that that gun fed my grandfather, and his siblings.  A guy I know told me if I got the “stain” off of it with some gun oil I could find a number on it that would show me (on the internet) where it came from.  Needless to say, I am very intrested in knowing that.  My great grandfather got the gun second hand (this is a handed down story, I never knew my great grandfather).

      I am a dumb ass as far as shotguns go.  The guy I talked to (and saw the gun) said it was a 20 gauge.  That was more than I knew.  :?

      Like an AA meeting I will offer up my own geekdum first.

      @F_alk:

      Oh great,
      not only did you create a thread which had no other use than belittleing another forum member.
      No, you haven’t read the link you posted. Otherwise you would have noticed that you right now created another strawman to beat up.

      Also, you vandalised on the Wikipedia. And vandalising is like saying “i hate free flow of information”, which is very similar to “i hate free speech”.

      You also ignored that the USan/Usan was already mentioned there. I have to assume that your brain is smaller than your balls that you had to add such a pathetic comment and disgrace and dishonour such a fine idea like the Wikipedia. But then, i am not surprised:
      I would never ask the forum here to honour a member of the organisation that was responsible for running the Concentration Camps in Nazi-Germany.

      Los Angeles?

      It blows my mind how you can get so upset about IL creating the thread, than say “his brains are smaller than his balls”.

      Do you really think you sway anyone to your way of thinking when you post like that?  It makes you look childish to say the very least.

      IL, if I may I would like to take on Falk’s claim in a manner that I think he may understand.

      I’m rubber, you’re glue.  Anything you say bounces off of me and sticks to you - doo doo head.

      @TemporaryLizard:

      Not sure I should even post on this. Having been away I can’t measure the amount of ill will between the two of you. Regardless, a post intended to do nothing but demean an opponent. One with no backing at all. Truly, this reflect poorly on the poster. It certainly does nothing to hurt CC’s reputation. Your should apologize. Not for CC, but for yourself.

      You don’t know the reason for it.  CC wanted make fun of IL, because IL said he had a “straw argument”.  Talking down to IL, CC said “don’t you mean strawman argument, I don’t know what a straw argument is”.  After this petty exchange CC typo’d or whatever and said he was the “Strawman”.

      IL called him out on it, and CC had the nerve to get upset.  “you know what I meant”.  CC lost any merit with “you know what I meant” when he made a big deal about a “straw argument”.  As I said, IL did what I have been dying to do whenever CC pulls this crap.  I just don’t lower myself to his level by pointing out meaningless typos.  But I am glad as hell that Leader did.

      @Soon_U_Die:

      Keep it in yer pants; problem solved.

      Being a little drunk is no excuse….and is in fact a very good reason to keep it in yer pants, for the very reason you outlined.

      Look it is very simple…

      You can choose to have recreational/casual sex.  Great go for it…

      Just understand you may regret it, you may be accused of something, you may get AIDS, you may get another STD.  You may get a reputation, you may get beat up by the brother, father, boyfriend…whatever.  Use your brain and assess the risks.

      We don’t need more laws.  Your example is simply two dumb kids, either of which could have zipped up.  Problem solved.  They didn’t…well ain’t that too bad for either/or/both of them.  I have no sympathy.  The world would be much better if people were took some accountability for their actions.

      SUD

      In her scenerio, he was accountable.  If she got preg.  than I am guessing he would have taken responsibilty.    If he got an STD, he is accountable for it because he chose to have sex.  In the scenerio that was described she is the one not being responsible.  She did something she regrets, and instead of being responsible for her own actions she pushed her “guilt” onto him and accused him of something he did not do.

      The guy in the above scenerio is blameless.  The woman on the other hand should have to serve a prison term equal to that the man would have served had he been convicted of the bogus rape.

    • Rape shield laws.

      I got into an interesting debate with a friend of mine over rape shield laws.  Not so much a debate really as an discussion because we both pretty much agreed.  Anyway, this is what came up from our argument and I would like to know what others think of it.

      We both agreed that a woman’s sexual past is her own damn bussiness.  It has no role in whether she was raped or not.  However “deviant” she may have been (or not been, we also agreed that if she is a sunday school teacher or something that has no relevance either) is not relavent.

      Further though, we talked about the “accused rights”.  Neither of us were sure if such a “shield law” existed (still don’t, so anyone with info would be welcomed) for the accused.  I fail to see the relevance if the guy was into bondage or S&M (or some other equaly “deviant” thing).  How does that play in?  Is his history as “off limits” as hers?  If he has a criminal sexual record I think that is relevant, but anything else should be off limits.

      The argument started with something I saw on the news, and developed into what I just said.  Initialy though it was about a guy who was released from prison after serving 18 years for a rape he did not commit (DNA evidence proved it).  After his release he found and killed the woman who put him away.  I only caught the tail end of the news, so I don’t know the specifics.

      Curious what others think of the whole thing.

      I am 33.  I have been playing the game since it came out in 85 (remember it because the bears went to the super bowl that year).

      I ran into the same problems leader had, but the extra editions and house rules compinsated for a lot of that.  Revised I like a lot because it fixed many problems.  Still have no air to air combat, but oh well.  At least now the best US strategy isn’t to buy nothing but bombers.

      I don’t hunt, only have one gun.  A 100 year old shotgun that my grandfather left me (he got it from his father).

      I am not big into guns, not my thing.  But I see the need for the second ammendment.  Because I have had a few beers I am going to share something I probably wouldn’t if I was sober.  I didn’t feel the need to own a real gun, my grandfather’s gun I don’t think can be fired any more (and we don’t have ammo anyway).

      However, recent events in my life I have felt that a gun in the house would be wise.  I live with my GF, her daughter (12) was “touched” by some white trash. I won’t go into the specifics, but suffice to say Mr White Trash made bail, and I am sure he resents being in jail.  I am worried about him “wanting revenge” for being in jail.  He is a threat, and I want a real gun (my grandfather’s gun doesn’t count).

      To the anti gun nuts, I guess I am evil because I want to protect my family (I may not share a genetic link with my  GFs daughter, but we are a family).

      Yes, it is our problem, but the problem is not that they are different, the problem is that “we” can’t accept them because of their difference. Shutting out immigrants won’t work; we are an aging society, we need young blood. But we have to learn quick to accept the immigrants and their children in every way.
      Also, in Europe they are not illegal, so i am not sure how that can be connected.
      Plus: Sarkozy called not only the rioters scum, but the people of the suburbs. That turned many young angry men there into even more rioters, he poured oil into the fire and is now surprised at how high the flames are.

      We are just not going to agree on this.  IMO all of Eurupe is heading for the same fate that destroyed the Austria Hungarian empire (and later still, Yugoslavia).

      As far as picking immigrants, France could not of picked a worse group to clash with their secular socialistic government.  This has little to do with Islam being horrible, I think there may be places in the US many could settle and no one would interfere with their customs.  The Bible belt jumps to mind, the amish (spelling?) are another.  The Christians here may not agree with them, but if they kept a good yard and had a job no one would say a thing (other than the bible thumpers who would probably bug them to convert, at worst they are annoying).  Islam does not sit well with a secular state.

      I have known a great deal of people from the middle east.  They are not rare here.  But we were much smarter in how we let people into our country (not just the middle east) than Europe has been.  Heck, most of the muslims I have known have been quite a bit higher than me in the economic chain.

    • RE: Need Help Defending Germany Against UK Strategic Bombing

      You can’t stop the US from bombing you if that is what they are going to do.  Just that simple.  Lucky dice rolls are all you can hope for.  Even than if all the US is doing is buying bombers than get used to losing 16 IPC a turn to the US.

      UK you can stop.  You have to take their $ away.  Go after Africa and destroy their Atlantic fleet with your airforce.  The UK does not have limitless IPC that the US does.

      Either way, you can’t stop the bombing.  What you can do is make enough extra IPC that the bombing damage is min.  That can be done by expanding into africa and attacking Russia since allied IPC is being spent buying bombers.

      @F_alk:

      @Zooey72:

      I think Germany will have similiar problems, just not as bad.  And if push really came to shove they could tell the turks there to get the hell out.  Neither the original people who came to germany were made citizens nor their children are citizens.  If this kind of insane crap goes on they could theoreticaly find themselves on a boat back to Turkey ((and REAL poverty) at least as of 5 years ago according to my old college prof.)

      Yes, there is a lot of talk about that. Though I perosnally think the turks are not the problem. Turkey want to be “part of the West” thus anyone who sees himself as “turk” will try to behave and allow Turkey to enter the EU. Also, the legislation has improved a bit (by a red-rgreen gov’t, and against resistance of the conservatives: planned was a much “better” immigration law but it had to be scaled down due to the resistance … and now, legally, the pope needs to lose german citizenship) allowing later generations of immigrants to gain citizenship quite easy (but still no double citizenship). Also, we speak of the third generation of turks in Germany. The really scary thing is, that their level of fluency in german is lower than the one of the second generation. A very clear warning sign that something goes very wrong in the integration process. Also, if you keep being a foreigner, you see the state in a different view:
      I for my part think the Russian-Germans are more in the situation like the rioters is France. They are german citizens, officially with the
      same rights as all germans. Still, they are not integrated, and often not allowed to take part in the wealth, with less chances to find a job just because of their name and the suburb they come from (just like in France).
      Plus, if they become criminals, they then tend to be more violent than turks or other germans (in that order).

      There is no such thing as “cheap labor”.

      Unfortunately, there is … from what i read, the USA are noticing that as well at the moment. And Western Europe will never be able to beat the prices of China, East Asia or Eastern Europe alone. That is a problem if you have “underqualified” people in your nations workforce. The market does not care for them and our understanding of humanity should mean that we can not leave them alone. Unfortunately, we in fact do, and now we are faced the bill. So, all i can hope, is that the “in fact do” changes to a “in fact did”.

      Either you come to this country legaly or you get out.

      Funny that you just spoke of France, and without any real notice shift to the USA. Would you mind to say so next time, so that i don’t have to wonder for a few sentences what the heck you are suddenly talking about?

      They do work that Americans won’t do for crap wages.

      Be prepared that this will happen more and more often. It is said that Germanies economy is “globalised” 4 times as much as the US economy. Otherwise, you will lose all cheap production, all out-sourcable cheap services etc. With no real social system, this will make the people work for the crap wages, just to survive.

      That is the truth.  These jobs must get done, and w/o the criminals doing them companies will be forced to raise the wages of these jobs to attract AMERICANS to do them.

      No :). It is always (by market fans) said you have a choice. Unfortunately, if the choice is starvation or crap wage … then people will take the crap wage. The situation is going to get worse in the US, believe me. The problem is not with illegal immigrants.

      If these things had been done in Eurupe than they would not have the problem they have now.

      It also is not the problem here. Even turks are too expensive in Germany. The costs of living are just too high for anyone to compete with production in China or services from Rumania or Polans (who in turn are pressured by Unkrainians and Belorussians).

      Yes, I down shiffted and should have led into it better.  However you took me out of context quite a few times so I think we are even as far as things go (btw, thank you for the civil post even though we disagree).

      Cheap labor does come with a price, the price Eurupe is paying right now.  I won’t go into every Eurpean country because the reason they have allowed the influx of immigrants varies.  My point is that as bad as the rioters in France feel that they have been misstreated is nowhere near the poverty they would have if they were in their home countries.  However they feel that they are cheated out of the wealth, but keep their nationalistic identity (which in their home country would mean they work for a dollar a day).  I do think that the Islamic countries are back a$$ward as far as how they conduct government and day to day life.  The immigrants in Eurupe do not look at themselves as Eurupeans, they cling to the nationalistic insanity that is destroying their own home countries.  All the while never seeing it as a benefit that they have the simlpe things like running water and food to eat which they would not have if not being in Eurupe.

      The first influx of immigrant labor after WW2 to Eurupe was more than happy to take crap jobs for crap pay (remind you of what is going on now in the US?)  because it was much better than what they had.  Their children want more, and they should.  But there has been no integration.  (Down shifting to the US now).  The US laws now, did not invite the illegals to come here (at least on paper, our government loves the cheap labor they are getting) and we either need to integrate or get caught into the same trap you have in Eurupe.  We need to be selective as far as who comes here.  Not the open door amnesty policy that Bush proposed (and was shot down by the American people because it would have been political suicide for the republicans).

      As I said, if you come to this country legaly than you should have every benefit that comes with being an American.  If you come here illegaly you should be given nothing.  Our illegal invasion must stop or in a decade or 2 we will be in the same situation as Eurupe is now.

      Well for me it was odd as i went to typically touristic places - Disney, Harper’s Ferry and a few Civil War sites, Arches Park near Moab Utah, as well as various places in South Dakota.  Also i’m pretty chatty - i like meeting people, and i do everywhere i travel and make great friends.  Still - no non-USies did i meet while travelling in the US.  Just a weird coincidence.

      You must of just had “bad” luck when going to Disney, I worked there for 2 semestesr and was just there over labor day - lots of Eurpeans.  Hell, go to EPCOT, all of the people there working the foriegn countries are straight from their original country.

      I remember 15 years ago (god am I old) I was working and had to take a lost child to main street in the Magic Kingdom (that is where we take them).  It was so heart wrenching, this poor little french girl was so scared and I could say nothing to her because she did not speak English.  When they find a lost child that does not speak English they call a call center with people who are versed in all languages who told her to come with me.  She was holding my hand and I could feel her trembling.

      I am getting off the point.  Just suprised you didn’t see any non Americans at Disney (there are a bunch).  Call it whatever you want, but since my Disney experience I have a dislike for Brazilian tourist (long story).

    • RE: The "right way" to play Germany

      @Robert:

      I like your idea on the germans key to victory.  I have found it very effective to buy a bomber a turn and use all of them to bomb the IPC’s right out of the russians.  I also buy bombers with the japenese and bomb the russians with that.  I really find now need for africa but if possible I could use the IPC’s.  I really need some tips in africa because I find it hard to hold of the russians for the first few turns and I don’t have enough money for Africa.

      I understand the pressure that the Russians can put on you.  More than likely they will go after you with 90% of their forces.  However, to put pressure in africa only really takes 1 inf 1 armor a turn.  With my proposed plane a turn that adds up to 18 IPC which means that 22 IPC can go after Russia.  The Russians will have to do something about the Japs encroaching on their territories, they make 24 IPC and I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility that they will spend more than 2 IPC (not even an infantry) a turn to fight the japs.  At worst you see a stalemate on the eastern front.  I am basing this on the starting out $ each country recieves because there is no way to know exactly how the game will evolve turns into it (the game is a dice rolling game, and things change).  However, any $ the Russians gain against the Germans, will be lost to $ lost to the japs.  Conversely, any $ lost in Eurupe will be gained in Africa.  So for simplicity sake I am using the starting out IPC.

      As to how to stop the Russians, the game has not changed so much as to not have the same “territory swap” that was in the original game.  The Germans or Russians will only move up when they have an overwhelming force to hold the territory taken.  To go 1/2 a$$ed means that the forces spent there will be destroyed at great cost to the original attacker.

      In most of my games 90% of allied forces go against Germany.  The people I play against do not really spend any IPC in the pacific, or against the Japs in general barring the few Infantry the Russians buy to delay the Japs.  So playing Germany most times I have to be able to fight all 3 allied powers, and hold out for the Japs to gain enough power to make their move.

      That was the way to play in the old game, and the people I play against refuse to adapt to the new game thinking that is the only way to play.  I have played the other countries and showed how diff. strategies can be effective, but they just chalk it up to me being lucky or what not, and never really consider doing these things themselves.

      Suffice to say, I am used to having the whole burden of the allied attack come on me when I play Germany.  I know I can’t win against those odds, but it has taught me to pick and chose my fights (which is why I like a strong German airforce so much - versatility).

      I would love play a game (online, or whatever) with someone who has a different strategy other than kill germany first, and pay little attention to Japan.  That is my biggest shortcoming in the game.

      Any takers?

    • RE: Dems win in Jersey and Virginia governors races

      @Yanny:

      See, that is where the problem lies. Your vote goes beyond simply choosing the person elected to office. By voting, (in number), you force those currently elected to pay attention to issues which matter to you, because they could potentially result in that person being ejected from office come next election if attention isn’t paid to it.

      So, if only 10% of people ages 18-24 vote, an elected offical can say “Let’s cut college loans [which is currently being attempted by the way. If the cut were to go into affect today my girlfriend might have to drop out of college]… because hell, you guys aren’t going to punish me if I do”.

      The reason our generation constantly gets screwed over by politicians is because they have nothing to fear. The reason that the baby boomers got everything in their favor was because for awhile they voted at 80% or more.

      You see, that is where I dissagree.  You are putting my voice as being a percent… and I am not a percent.  I am a person who believes strongly in many things, but even the people who agree with me I don’t see as my peers most times.

      I am pro life… I have nothing in common with Christian fundamentalist who are also pro life.

      I am against the death penalty…  But I have nothing in common with feel good liberals who want to give the benefit of doubt to people who are obviously guilty.

      You look at a voice being a demographic.  I’m not a demographic.  I’m a person and my opinion will not be heard by punching a hole in a card.  Our society will evolve into what it will.  If it gets to the point that America goes to hell in a hand basket my voice will be heard a lot more vocaly than a simple vote.  The worst case it will be heard from the barrel of a gun.

      There are far too many stupid people out there that do vote that would counter my little vote.  Both sides have them whether it be red necks who hate the nee grows or minorities who think that AIDS was created by our government to kill them off.

      At best, your individual vote is a gesture.  Any rational person knows that their lone vote means nothing.  But I would be the first to get a gun if the government ever made it illegal to vote.
