      Well, the map is more compact and portable than the gameboard & pieces. I just use it for visual reference… maybe someday there’ll be an interactive mapview-type deal for the mac.

      Anyway, if the battle results from Dicey were sent to a wrong address, you could forward the ones you received to me. Or is your counteroffensive just stuck in the steppes?

      Awright: Assuming that the per capita stats are available, and that such stats be of unassailable integrity, I will consider conditionally ceding the wide-body toilet issue to the honorable delegates from Australia, Germany, and (sigh) Canada.

      Nope – but the game is on!

      I am assuming you did receive all the diceroll results today, for my Axis T01 attacks. Those should have been sent by Dicey. I received 'em and you were supposedly copied.

      To file your combat moves, go to “Battle Command” at aaemc – the actual name of the page is Dice Server Login. There you enter your email address, game # 1363 and you are off to the races.

      I don’t know if this Dicey is diff from other Dicey-places or what – but I rolled separately for each territory invaded, after plunking in the quantity and type of units involved. You’ll see. Then the results are nearly instant, right on the website, with the emails just as instant.

      By now you should have also received my recap & NCM (I sent it directly to your upper49th address).

      @F_alk:

      @ZimZaxZeo:

      For an eye-widening experience, check out the film “Alexander Nevsky” (silent B/W) in which Russia is a loosely defined territory, circa A.D. 1000, and this prince Nevsky must rally the people and soldiery to halt an invasion by… none other than the Teutonic knights – wait til you dig the bizarre yet strangely familiar helmets on these early German horsemen! Then there’s the amazing clash of mounted armies on the frozen lake (Ladoga?)

      I heard about that movie. Do you know when it was shot? Anyway, in the late WW1, the germans already had that helmet that they used in WW2 as well.
      THe movie btw was banned by Stalin during the non-agression time :)
      For more info: see
      http://www.dvdreview.com/html/alexander_nevsky___ivan_the_terrible.html

      so, it was shot 1938 :) … and the lake was Lake Chudskoe called “Ledovoe Poboishche”…

      Right – great link you found there! The director, Sergei Eisenstein, is probably the greatest Russian filmmaker of the 20th century. Yet he was accused by Stalin of, among other things, “nostalgia” and hounded. His most often celebrated film is “Battleship Potemkin” which is built around the 1917 Russian Revolution, and is known for its amazing imagery and editing: one image in particular is a cinematic icon: the baby carriage by itself bumping down the vast stairs of the city hall after the crowd has been fired upon.

      Right you are on the helmets – but think of seeing a version as early as 1250!! Talk about enduring design!

      @cystic:

      Personally i’m not sure if the military needs more funding or not. In a way i would like to see a more respectable showing of ourselves, but the Mennonite in me says that the money should be spent elsewhere.

      go Mennonite!

      Spend it on protecting fisheries, spend it on astrophysics, spend it on feeding the penniless in Toronto, spend it on the Inuit, spend it not on Hydro Quebec, invest it in nonfossil fuel energy development, spend it on tourism marketing… or save it for a rainy day.

      Dude, I’d be surprised if most European countries even keep records on “hate crimes.” I can be as cynical as any, but most people in this ol’ USofA are a forgiving type, live-and-let-live, salt of the earth, hold a job and send the kids to medical school or computer academy, etc.

      I have done my share of bad-mouthing one kind of red-white-and-blue redneck or snob or intolerant sshle or another, but there are few other nations these days that welcome just about everybody, and provide the avenues for free speech, etc. And while we are at it, THANK GOODNESS for THOMAS JEFFERSON, the original champion of the separation of church and state. It seems to me that most of the people on Main Street don’t wish to shove their private religious beliefs down other Americans’ throats – and it also seems to me that – for all of our gross, underhanded, outright illegal and other horrible mistakes and human rights infringements over the years – the U.S. military goes more out of its way than most other military organizations to protect the innocents.

      You know something that really moves me emotionally. I am not kidding here – if you want to take a read of how forgiving, thoughtul and all-embracing the true American ideal can be, simply contemplate the amazing wheelchair-capable restroom! Where else on this spinning, orbiting madhouse of a world can you find, in city after town after truckstop after business after factory after schoolhouse such a basic effort toward improving human dignity!?

      Instead of casting aside our “crippled” or maimed or otherwise disabled, we mandate nationally that their simplest needs and urgent natural callings must be accommodated in a civilized way. Dammit, show me what other country has more wheelchair restroom stalls per capita than the USofA? (IF some wiseguy sez Canada, well shucks I capitulate technically, but the comparison is frivolous)
      We care about the underdog, even while the fat cats, white collar criminals, political prostitutes, street gangs, cable tv companies and organized mobsters are looting us all blind.

      Inch’ Allah and God Bless America and let’s keep moving away from the medieval mores of the past and toward greater tolerance as intrepidly as possible!

      (and thanks for hearing out this rant)

      Hmm – just now received a mailer-daemon notification: they held the email to dicey@aaemc.net for one day, found it undeliverable, and now have dropped it.

      OK – so now I will email a different address – straight to one of the moderators or whatever at aaemc.

      I’ll make sure you hear of the outcome, Mr. Ghoul

      Ciao for now

    • RE: Could Germany have won "the Great Patriotic War?"

      Strictly a marriage of convenience! For Hitler, keep Russia out of the situation until we are secure in the West. For Stalin, get my share of Polish real estate – which also just might be a buffer once this maniac gets set to attack me!

      Anyway, Russia has been invaded by swarms from the west since time immemorial. Stalin knew that, regardless of any warmer recent relations. Your point is nevertheless well taken F_alk, because there must have been open and somewhat cozy lines of communication for the secret pact dividing Poland to have been established. And look at relations since 1945: Germany and USSR were always ahead of the rest in doing business across the Iron Curtain. I maintain that geography is destiny: As the main economic power in Europe proper, due in part to its central location, Germany would always be the logical partner with a westward-looking Russia.

      ((The real way for Hitler’s Reich to have staying power would have been to keep Russia on its side – how about THAT as a topic: how would the African and Balkan fronts have worked out, not to mention the plans to take down Britain, had Berlin-Moscow relations remained cordial? A chilling prospect.))

      Nifty strategic points, Y-man.

      Does anyone know where to find decent info regarding how much materiel was provided to USSR by the Allies during WWII (e.g., percent of steel and other raw assets, percent of total Soviet armored vehicles, etc.)

      Straight ahead, Yanny.

      The world needs fewer scapegoats and scapegoaters, and more individuals willing to stand up, take responsibility for their community. Keep lending that hand and studying the issues… maybe that politician will someday turn out to be you.

      Poland has inherited one of those geographic legacies of double-edged value. Wonderful farmland, central location, good waterfront = all benefits for the economy! But these translate militarily into nice, flat, easy-to-roll-up territory, immediately accessible by many foes from every direction!

      The book POLAND by James Michener is a great read. My favorite chapters cover the Euro Christianoid armies (from France, Germany & Poland) marching to Vienna with Jan Sobieski at the helm (circa 1270??), arriving just in time to break the siege by the Turks, marking the high-water mark of their invasion into Europe. The book has at least three chapters about Poland being overrun or in dire shape by invasions; the chapter titles, if memory serves, are simply: “From the East,” “From the West,” “From the South.”

      Another amazingly resilient tribe of people, the Poles (or Pollacks, depending on individual preference). After the living death of WWII and then 45 years of industrial zombiedom under the USSR, they inherited one of the most pervasive ecological wastelands on Earth, not to mention a bare-subsistence economy. Yet their efforts, led by Solidarnosc, were key to the crumbling of the Soviet Union, and now they have the strongest economy of the new members of the European Community.

      I guess there’s something special in that kielbasa!

      I sent it at 12:32 Eastern time. Daylight savings is in effect – don’t know how that affects Manitobans. Also don’t know how AOL stamps times on its freakin email system – time the sender posted in sender’s timezone, or time sender posted in recipient’s timezone, or some alien timeframe.

      Anyway, as for posting our game as a new thread in the Games area, do you want to just send our moves to each other there, as in a PlayByForum (and simultaneously email them to Dicey) – or would you rather email each other direct?

      Questions, questions – ven vill der bombink und strafink shtart??

    • RE: New Member seeks A&AE PBEM Gamer

      Well here’s the deal as I get it (remember, I’m new at this).

      Dicey will email us the results. I xed or un-xed the box to that effect.

      Dicey has the ability to email us each combat roll. I thought that might be too much email… I guess I interpreted that as every single die, every round, every battle. I dunno.

      Dicey, the way I read the thing, keeps the rolls on file anyway, so if we want more than just the results, we can go there and check em out.

      We can also x or un-x the box to change it back to emailing us all of the rolls.

      In the meantime, we are now in the meantime – meaning, awaiting Dicey to crunch the moves I sent this morning for Axis T01. Any idea how long the turnaround generally is for a Dicey set of results?
