Just right because they force navies to bulk up on protection and it makes the game more dynamic. Bombers being cheaper allows for flexibility when playing Germany to have them attack arriving convoys or support a counter attack on the Russia front. Before they were just too expensive to be used very much. It certainly makes the game more fun.

The problem in KJF is that you have to make tradeoffs - you can invest into keeping Africa, establishing a UK/US mainland presence in Asia or keeping the UK Pac fleet intact, but it always comes at a cost in another theater. I think that you either need to put extra pressure on Japan (by building an India factory or an agressive fleet placement) or contest Africa for a pre-planned KJF to work. With that in mind, unifying the fleet has two advantages:

it can enable a US2 move to Sol

it forces Germany to be careful around Africa, because UK can land with 3-4 inf plus air in Ken or Egypt. With that in mind, building a SAf factory on UK2 becomes a possibility (you send the loaded trn with Aus inf to SAf on UK2, and move the rest of the fleet to NSW) and you can kill the German Med fleet on UK2

That said, Japan can still send its entire fleet so Sol on J2 to thwart the unification and even if it doesn’t, getting to Sol and capturing and keeping EI are two different things. Furthermore, you have given Japan a good start on the mainland (and the income base that comes with it).

I always felt allies were stronger in both scenario. You just have to know how to play Russia agressively.

Definitely not. Allies are at a huge disadvantage in 41. Although Axis is at a huge disadvantage in 42. Its unfortunate that neither scenario is balanced.

Transports are better.  If don’t have the naval strength to land in sz12, then you need to build it.  Once you start landing in SZ12, you are

Taking out an Italian NO Threatening Italy Threatening France/NWE

That’s alot for Germany to worry about, and it requires alot of resources to protect Italy and France.

By contrast, Axis can totally ignore a Brazil factory and a transport or 2 going to Congo.  By not contesting North Africa and/or threatening Germany’s rear end, this Brazil strat helps Germany put more income into destroying Russia.

Func has it right, that C-Sub paper is super old and makes alot of bad assumptions….it needs an edit.  Obviously if Japan drops absolutely everything to deal with India than the Russians should help out.  In any case, if the Japs put everything into a J3 attack and lose some planes to the aa then sometimes the Russians can simply liberate it and UK can build there on the same turn.

I’m not really big on India for the reasons outlined above–it ties down valuable hardware in an area of secondary strategic value, and if Japan plays it right UK is forced into a defensive posture there.  Still, it is fun to play and every good A&A player should give it a try–just preferably not against your toughest adversary.

These days I hardly buy any UK factories unless its late game and UK has the cash to spare…but if you are going to go with a factory UK1 then India is probably the most interesting option.

Britain can start with more factories only if nations are not allowed to use captured factories.

Germany+Italy should outproduce UK+Russia while Japan should be two times weaker than USA in a 1942 scenario.
