    • RE: Member kharma?

      @Imperious:

you cant do anything till you got 100 Axis and Allies pictures posted.

      get busy.

:-D Hahaha, good one! Not sure how many others will get it though.

To clue you in… elbowmaster hosted a cool A&A pic of the day at the AH site, then over at Larry’s site.

But I’m guessing the actually answer is (as I suspected) you need 100+ posts to post karma. ~ZP

    • RE: AH Boards moving

Yah, it’s an “interesting” scene going on over there. I rarely frequented the AH site anymore anyway after the minis were introduced. Guess it’s cool that the minis became so popular and took off like they did, IF you’re into the minis. If you aren’t, well as time went on the site quickly had very little else to offer.

I’d always do the “new posts” search and out of 100 new posts there literally might be 1 or 2 that were not mini related. It was no longer the place to discuss the board game rules and strategies that it once was. And it became obvious that most of the other board game regulars had moved on as well.

I won’t redo my registration on the Gleemax forum as I don’t feel I’ll be missing anything worthwhile anyway. When they finally close down the current AH forum, that will be that. ~ZP

    • RE: Windows Vista

I really don’t think Vista itself is as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Much of the problem with Vista comes down to hardware compatibility (or lack thereof). The steep hardware requirements for Vista to run decently (and not just the aero eye candy part) no doubt alienated probably 90% of the existing XP user base. Not good. So by bringing out a new OS upgrade that won’t run acceptably on most existing hardware… 9 out of 10 people are going to complain (and rightfully so) that Vista is nothing short of horrible. And I don’t blame them one bit because for 9 out of 10 people… Vista IS horrible.

To compound that, I think that some of the new(er) machines that came bundled with Vista still weren’t quite up to the task. The 1GB of ram which seemed like ridiculous overkill last year isn’t even close. Anyone working with onboard video ram (or worse, sharing system ram for video) is likely in for a severe case of “click and wait”. And nothing will infuriate a user more than to buy a newer system supposedly “Vista ready” only to find out that while their system will physically run Vista… the user experience is absolutely terrible. This is why MS quickly ushered in XP “downgrades” for many “Vista ready” machines.

In that respect, MS really did drop the ball with Vista. No one who bought a supposedly Vista ready machine really cares if their problems are hardware, or software related. They just know that it sucked! Had MS stretched the truth a bit with their claims “Vista ready”? Apparently. But again, it really doesn’t matter why to the end user. They only know that if they go back to XP they will certainly return to an enjoyable user experience. And too, that their Vista experience “sucked”.

I’m primarily a Mac user so believe you me I’m NOT sticking up for or defending MS or Vista in any way, shape or form. I’m just trying to put things into perspective. In the past year or so I’ve run “the big 3” (Mac, MS and Linux) so as time goes on I really become less of a Mac user and more of just a “system” user, using whatever tools best suit the task at hand. There’s lots and lots of PC and Linux software out there too so I really like having those options. And virtulization really is the way of the future.

On a brand new Q6600 quad core machine with 4GB ram and 256MB Nvidea card Vista runs just fine. Oh sure, it still has it’s share of MS “quirks” (I can’t create a useable Photoshop droplet on Vista for some reason, stuff like that.) And yes those dumb security nags ARE pointless and silly but still not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. On that same machine my experience with Fedora 8 really was dismal. I could not get Flash or Java to work and after literally weeks worth of reading and trying this, that and the other thing still could not solve the problem.

Anyway, I think the majority of people bashing Vista these days are simply parroting what they’ve heard/read without any firsthand experience whatsoever (or perhaps installed Longhorn beta on a P4 with predictably dismal results). I would invite anyone to sit down at a truly capable machine and put Vista though it’s paces. Then you would be evaluating the software itself for it’s merits/detriments without the bias of unsuitable hardware. Now what constitutes a truly Vista capable machine IS a very major problem and that’s really the only point I’m trying to make here. So yes I think MS absolutely dropped the ball on Vista to be sure, but not for the reasons that most people think. ~ZP

…I just have one big doubt about running Axis & Allies on Windows Vista…

Which Axis and Allies are you trying to run? The old Hasbro CD, the newer Atari version, or Triplea? ~ZP

      @Crazy:

      I’m a moderator over there now…

      Elk???  :-D

I’m not a developer for Triplea, just a contributor. I just built a new quad core machine (so new the heat sink paste hasn’t even set up yet) and Triplea runs flawlessly on it. I’ve run Triplea on Mac (OS 9 and X), PC (XP and Vista) and Linux (Various) and I have yet to have a single problem, ever.

If you suspect the trouble may lie in your ISP/Router/Firewall then it’s a true disservice to blame the program as being poor. You’re probably correct in your assumption though since most of the time for networking problems it’s a simple matter of opening the correct port in your firewall/router and configuring Triplea to that port. Another thing to keep in mind is if you run the latest version of Triplea you also need to have the latest version of Java.

As Crazy Elk… er, Ivan said if you need help getting it sorted out just provide a few details. ~ZP

By computers do you mean computer players (AI)?

The AI or computer player(s) in Triplea is still pretty basic. Nothing has changed in this release. The AI still works well for teaching the basics of game mechanics to someone new to the game. But it’s not far enough along to make a decent opponent. ~ZP

Shipshot762: oob = out of (the) box rules

Playing for 2 capitols is really gonna drag out the game. Once you capture 1 enemy capitol and hold it 1 full round the game is over in realistic terms. Playing for a 2nd capitol just puts one side through the agony of shoving pieces around to inevitable loss while the other side revels in it’s “even dice can’t touch me now” smugness. ~ZP

    • RE: Triplea 0.9.1 beta

Romulus: As of TripleA version 0.5.2 and upwards, you can use either Java 1.5 or Java 1.4 to run TripleA - per the Triplea documentation. Glad you like the new look of revised (the map was my doing).

General D. Fox: Can you post more on what version you downloaded and what the error message says?

Hmm… you’d think if one or more of the downloads were outright corrupt there would be an avalanche of messages about it on the Triplea forum already. This is the first I’ve heard anything.

I always download the “all platforms” version anyway. All the windows installer version really does for you is to “formally” install Triplea into your Program Files folder on your PC. And that’s not where I’d want it anyway. The latest version of Triplea always lives on my desktop. The only other difference is that the “all platforms” version provides program launchers for both Mac and PC (one of which you can toss unless you happen to need both.) Other than that…

If the windows specific version is giving you fits try the “all platforms” version. I download that one once and run it everywhere. ~ZP

    • RE: Membership required to post?

I vote yes… ban guest posting entirely. Like has been said, it only seems to encourage flaming posts. And I can’t see where most truly “casual” players who browse through the site will be affected by this at all. Most who are that casual in play and/or interest, and don’t wanna sign up are probably here to basically read up (and maybe get to the point where they can contribute strategies). And if you’re “up to speed” to be posting anything worthwhile here you’re almost certainly dedicated enough just to sign up in the first place. And of course those who don’t wanna sign up, but just find simple rules clarifications can learn to use the search function. :D So as long as the casual players can still browse around (which of course they would, being a message board after all) I see banning guest posts entirely as only being a positive thing. Freedom of speech? Phht! Nice thought, but whatever one may want/need to post “clinging to annonimity” probably isn’t worthwhile being here anyway. Seems to me 90% of the guest posts are simply from people who forgot they weren’t logged in… the other 10% tend to be flame can be lived without. ~ZP

    • RE: Is there anywhere I can d/l A&A for free?

You can find the orig. Axis & Allies CD on e-Bay for about $10 including shipping. But a copy of A&A Iron Blitz is another story, starting around $50 and going up to just ridiculous. But it’s an important distinction when comparing the going price(s) of the PC game. ~Zero Pilot

    • RE: Axis and Allies Computer Game

You didn’t say whether or not you are playing the orig. Axis & Allies CD game or the newer Axis and Allies - Iron Blitz and if this was off the CD or a downloaded version of the game. I’ve never had either CD but downloaded 2 different copies of Iron Blitz now . One was touted as a “ripped” version, was smaller in size (I’m guessing maybe 250 MB) and another version said to be the complete CD which was more like 450 MB. The “ripped” version ran just pathetically slow… painfully so, until I read a tip to copy all the data files into the DATA folder the install creates. This actually made the game playable and was so thankful to whoever figured that out! I tried just moving all the files into DATA folder (instead of copying them) and that didn’t work, seems some of the files need to stay where they are. I also tried just making aliases and putting those in DATA and that didn’t work either. So I just copied everything that wasn’t a folder into DATA and it worked flawlessly. Now the “full” CD download version that play now has all the “movie” sequences that the ripped one didn’t have and this version has only two big files in DATA (movies.MGF and music.MGF) but it also works perfectly. It must have something to do with how the “ripped” version was prepared/stripped down. Anyway, if you are using a downloaded version of the game there may be some help in all that for you. If you’re running off the CD, sorry… well maybe I helped somebody out there. :D ~Zero Pilot
