    • RE: What is a balanced Revised Bid?

My ftf gaming group doesn’t use bids so I’m used to whatever advantage/disadvantage that brings to the table for the respective sides. I’m not used to a bid though. The other day I played a pick-up 4 player game online where the axis had like an 8 bid. I was Russia and sure wasn’t used to that automatic 2nd transport in the Med. round 1.

Well from my perspective I think the perfect bid is Axis 3. Just to add another dude in Libya and only that because if Anglo-Egypt round 1 goes sour for Germany the rest of the game is an uphill struggle for the Axis. Nobody wants to play a game that’s largely decided by round 2. In fact, just add the dude to the initial setup and do away with bidding altogether. ~ZP

I keep inviting Krieghund up to Lancaster, PA from his Virginia homestead to play in the A&A tourney I run, but he keeps giving some lame excuse. Craig

    • RE: Play balance in AA50 / Bids

      @squirecam:

If I were WOTC, I would have brought 5 copies, basically shut down the revised mega, and let everyone play the new game. Massive feedback with new and experienced gamers all at once, and all costing you nothing.

      Exactly!

And I was just certain they would have play tested this one to the max after what happened last time. With Revised the fanbase rewrote the rulebook right after the release. And I just read in a different thread here where Larry said everything was locked in on the Anniversary Ed. by April 08. Crap.

Well of course they do playtest “internally” and, I don’t know what it is that makes the difference but the internal playtesting never seems to bear out quite the same results as what the advanced players here and elsewhere can come up with. It probably comes down to the fact that we try everything.

So no paid playtest group is ever going to be able to touch the amount of time and variability that a forum board or tournament following is able to offer. It’s a shame WOC didn’t approach it that way. 5 sets going full bore at GenCon would have provided such valuable insight and feedback.

Hmm… bomber damage on IC’s seems extremely strong and subs and destroyers seem extremely cheap. Too cheap? Too strong? Too this? Not enough that? Well with or without our feedback we the fanbase will soon know. It’s kinda like 2004 all over again. ~ZP

If the US supports Africa the UK is usually the one that could use the IC. The problem is where. As soon as you place the thing it becomes Japan’s immediate priority. In my gaming group it’s hard for any nation to keep a new IC, so we rarely build 'em. ~ZP

    • RE: Most Important Piece

      @Bunnies:

Generally, though, the UK bomber is pretty pimped out.  Would you rather have a third Russian fighter or that first UK bomber?  What about a second UK bomber instead of the second Russian fighter?  I think I’d prefer a second UK bomber to a second Russian fighter myself.

I’ll take that 3rd Russian fighter, no doubt. Nobody ever asked before (gee that was easy). Can I get a 4th too instead of the 1st UK bomber? I’m not understating the importance of the UK bomber either, when you have it. It gets pimped out a lot and you end up counting on it. But given the choice… ?

Russia is the one trading turf as quickly as possible from round 1, swapping some territories just for IPC leverage in the first couple rounds. Having Russian fighters in on every battle you possibly can saves those precious boots on the ground. A 3rd Russian fighter buy is somewhat a trump card, if/when you can pull it off. Having the extra one from the start? Pfft. Wouldn’t even have to think twice about that.

    • RE: Evolution and the Eye

So at what point in the debate are you able to hold religion to it’s word? Back in Galileo’s day when it was absolute blasphemy to say the earth revolved around the sun? Today? Tomorrow? Religion by rights should be an absolute of absolutes but “modern organized religion” has been furiously back peddling on their “story” for the past y2k years.

So for sake of argument let’s see. On the one side you have those wanting to understand things and gain knowledge through a practical logical approach. On the other side you have this age old explanation handed down and which has been contorted for millennia so as not to appear completely absurd and foolish in the face of knowledge.

And now apparently the debate over creationism vs. evolution seems to have been “ended” once and for all with the scientologists. Why they’ve discovered the ultimate end all answer: “oh yeeeaaah… the big bang and all that evolution stuff… yep God created all that… and just exactly the way you’re sayin’ it, too.”

Divine intervention they say. Well isn’t that convenient. And how well would that explanation have gone over even 20-30 years ago? But it had got to that point where to try and tow the old line would have been absurd. Like trying to maintain the earth is the center of the universe/center of all life while a martian lander is sitting on the red planet scraping the soil as we speak.

Someone was telling me recently when they moved the new church they were considering joining was insistent, adamant they provide them with their yearly salary… ya know, so the church would know how much money they could count on them for (and it was a specific percentage too). Gee, how “spiritual” that. Needless to say, they didn’t join.

So ponder, read between the lines, connect the dots, fill in the blanks and draw your own conclusions. I’m not saying anybody is right or anybody is wrong. There’s a reason why they call it faith. My “faith” in daring to overfly your AA with my fighters might not be the same as yours, either. Faith is like that.

But this discussion of course applies to “modern organized religion.” Spirituality is something very different and that I hold in great regard. Sometimes I tend to think Native Americans were the closest to getting it right in a practical sense after all. Their “religion” somehow understood the balance of all things. They believed that the air and water and soil were alive. Of course we know better…(wait, get a microscope.)

But just look at where our “modern religion” indifference of these simple “pagan” things have got us. Poison our very own water and air… health problems with much longevity thanks to modern medicine. Spirituality is all but lost while religion is stronger than ever. The world just doesn’t work well with the concept of “take only what you need” anymore. It’s take all you can. Yes, just look at us now.

    • RE: Axis & Allies Iron Blitz, is there a patch???

      Jen:

How did you try to open Triplea saved games? As you may have found out just double clicking the file doesn’t work. Using “open with” won’t work either because Java programs never show up in the list of programs.

To use a Triplea saved game file you need to put the file into the savedGames folder in the Triplea directory then open the saved game from within Triplea. That should work.

As for the firewall issue, if you configure your firewall to allow Triplea to use port 3300 you should be good to go. That’s the default port, however you can choose whatever port you like. But if you do decide to use something other than 3300 you need to change the default in Triplea to match it. ~ZP

    • RE: Infantry

      “IPCsies”?  :-D

I agree that infantry is the most critical purchase. But the 3/3 tank and the ability to transport a 3/3 tank along with a pair of boots really throw a curve ball into this. IMHO for all practical game purposes the 3/3 blitzing tank for 5 IPCs is the most powerful piece in Revised for it’s numbers and what it can do.

      @dezrtfish:

I’ve played tripleA with friends, is there a site to get pick-up games?

When you first start Triplea one of the options you have is “Find Games on the Lobby Server”. The Lobby Server functions much like a dedicated IRC for those looking to play on the spot. That’s the best way to find a pick-up game.

Although I know many peeps on this site have been using and clinging to that older version of Triplea which was patched to use the A&A.org dice server. Offhand I don’t know what version of Triplea it was, but suffice to say it’s basically outmoded. Here’s why that makes a difference in finding a pick-up game in the Lobby.

To insure game play compatibility the Lobby Server is basically linked to (and gets updated with) each of the Triplea stable releases. Simply put, if you run an old version of the game you’re also connecting to an older Lobby Server. You only see people in the Lobby who are running the same release as you are.

Typically the older the release is the tougher it is to find a game in the Lobby. Just don’t want anyone trying out their ages old Triplea download then sit around an empty Lobby going “what the hell?”  The best bet in finding a pick-up game in the Lobby Server is to be running the latest Triplea stable release.

The latest stable release 1.0.0.3 is here:

    • RE: 1998 board game PC version

The original Hasbro A&A cd does indeed go for about $5. But that’s because most people are looking for the “Iron Blitz” version of the cd. The Iron Blitz version is an enhancement to the original.

Several years ago the IB version was fetching crazy dollars. You would rarely see one going for less than $100. The reason they saw such crazy prices was because for a long time they were the only thing going. There were “ripped” versions of the Iron Blitz cd around, but you could tell it was definitely a ripped version. It ran quirky but… it ran. I’ve never seen a disk image of the IB cd-rom.

Now, there are alternatives to the orig. cd:

Triplea project A free, open source alternative playable on any system that has java. Supports real time online play, multiple game and map scenarios including creating your own.

      https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=44492

Gleemax online The official Wizards of the Coast site where you can play the game online. This just recently came out in beta phase. You have to sign up at the site but so far it’s been free.

    • RE: Historical(ish) question

This is an interesting question to speculate. Don’t think there is a definitive answer to it but it’s interesting to ponder.

One IPC supposedly represents “1 million man hours of production”. But how exactly “1 million man hours of production” relates to actual WWII dollars and literal man hours of production labor and material costs is probably anyone’s guess.

Personally I don’t believe the IPC’s stately “1 million man hours of production” is based on any true math. I think it’s just a very impressive number imprinted onto the game’s warbucks to signify that you are indeed buying more than just 1 single tank or artillery etc.

      Let’s compare a few numbers:

A Sherman tank cost $33,500 in WWII dollars.
      http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_was_the_cost_of_a_sherman_tank_in_ww2_dollars

A P52 Mustang tips the register at $51,000.
      http://www.greatplainswing.org/p51.htm

      A B17 cost $238,329.
      http://home.att.net/~jbaugher2/b17_29.html

And an Iowa Class battleship costs a whopping $125 million.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_class_battleship

So yes one could play with the figures and attempt to come up with some all serious significance between the costs of the units in the game, the abstracted value of an IPC and actual numbers and costs in WWII dollars if one were so inclined.

However I think you’ll find that IPCs in the game are very abstract indeed and meant to represent “relational” economics for purposes of gameplay as opposed to historically representing the actual costs and true numbers of wartime equipment and personnel.

But it’s still fun to speculate. ~ZP
