      @oztea:

      I like this idea a lot. I had a similar idea a while back, wherein to win you had to get to a certain number of points. 2 points for each capital, 1 point for each non capital VC, and 1 point for each National Objective you satisfied this turn.

      You calculate the axis total, and the allied total.

      Lets spit ball, the axis wins if they have 20 points at then end of turns 1-5
      or they win if they have 18 points at the end of turns 6-10
      or they win if they have 16 points at the end of any turn after 11 they win.

      The Allies would win if the axis falls below 10 points at the end of turns 1-5.
      Or if they fall below 12 points at the end of turn 6-10
      Or if they fall below 14 points at the end of any turn after 11.

      I’m gonna have to digest this and see how the math works in different situations, regardless… it’s great to hear from someone that believes in the points per city formula, and I really like the idea of points for objectives as well.

      @knp7765:

      I think the other nations would welcome such a development. “Oh, you have a bunch of paratroops and transport planes? Good! Now I’m going to invade you with my stack of tanks and mechs.”

      Yes, this would echo the principle of unequal force ratios stated in the proverbial Law of the Sword, which says “The guy with the gun usually wins.” Â

      @Arthur-Bomber-Harris the retreat is only for one turn. By stacking and blocking Alexandria you can comeback UK2 and even make an airbase there.
      It´s a withdrawal UK1 to attack on UK2.

      @diabo:

      in my group we play in similar ways, but i think it is not wise to do japan’s turn, BEFORE russia bought units.

      another thing is, i have to admit, i had to smile that you regarded france as a block for itself… ;)

      If there were a reason to change Japan’s strategy based on what Russia purchases, I’m sure it would be a minor issue. A larger issue is the time it takes for Japan to finish their turn, in my experience, Japan is the biggest culprit when it comes to clock consumption and getting Japan started right away is paramount for quick games.

      I totally agree YoungGrasshopper. Also with the movie you mentioned T2 should have been the final one in that series.  Made perfect sense for everything to end in that movie.

      @Young-Grasshopper this game is fun throughout and I highly recommend it to anyone a fan of world war 2 like me been playing it my whole life and I like playing both sides with victories for both but I find it more achievable to win as the axis I like using subs and fighters a lot to scare the English most of the time

      @cyanight:

      I found you… Im SteelerLou, lol… I had made an account for a Steeler give-away sometime ago, lol.  Actually plan to use a couple of your house rules this weekend.  The NO’s, Strategic Bombing from AB, Neutral Blocs and Groupings of minor countries with majors.

      Awesome, I see you, and if you’re not on twitter often I can always come here and inform you of scheduled game days so you can get the in game updates. Thanks for trying my house rules, the best one of all is the Strategic Bombers needing to leave from an Air Base in order to get the +2 damage bonus… I can see a rule like that fitting in nicely with the official rules.

      @ossel:

      I really don’t understand all this “house rule” talk…

      The 1942 setup is APPROVED BY LARRY HARRIS!!!

      It is not a house rule. It is an official alternate setup. Therefore, it should get one of the following:

      A Subforum under the G40 Board (Similar to the setups of AA50)

      Its own forum (Similar to 1939)

      A sticky

      I get that ppl posting house rules in main game forums is a problem, and personally I think it should be better organized, but either way that discussion does not apply here.

      Well said!

      I have labored in the past thinking of ways to fix the Research & Development phase. My ideas have ranged from ridiculously complex and elaborate to outright stupid, however, my final draft is both simple and balanced. The following house rule has been rigorously play tested, and none of the original technologies have been modified. This rule is balanced enough to bring the R&D phase into your games more often, while simple enough to get your fellow players to approve it.

      Grasshopper’s Tech Rule

      When an eligible nation chooses to enter the Research phase by purchasing 1 or more research dice, they will receive 1 bonus roll for free. Therefore…

      _- if you buy 1 dice for $5, you will get 2 dice for a chance to roll a 6

      if you buy 2 dice for $10, you will get 3 dice for a chance to roll a 6 if you buy 3 dice for $15, you will get 4 dice for a chance to roll a 6 etc…_

      If a 6 was rolled during the research phase, you must then choose a technology chart to roll on during the development phase. However, after you have chosen a technology chart, and before you make a development roll, you may choose one technology that you will be immune from. For example…

      - America chooses to make their development roll using technology chart #2, and decides to be immune from Radar (technology #4). Therefore, if a 4 is rolled, the player for America must try again until they get a result other than 4.

      This process is reset after each game round allowing players to choose different charts and immune technologies with each R&D phase.

      Thanks for providing this background information, YG.  I now understand better what you’re aiming to accomplish.  I don’t have a specific solution to recommend that might work for your group, but here are a few questions you and the other people in your group might want to consider.  The answers may provide you with guidance on what kind of point-scoring system might best suit your purpose. Fundamentally, the question to consider is: what kind of accomplishments do you want to reward by awarding points?  Here are a couple of aspects of that question:

      First: do you want the rewards to be incremental (round-by-round) throughout the game or do you want them to be based only on the final outcome?  Under the first option, it doesn’t matter so much whether a player controls X at the end of the game; all that matters is how often he controlled it during the game.  Under the second option, the reverse would be the case.  Each option has its upside and its downside.  For example, under a final-outcome-only system, a player who controlled X throughout the game but lost it on the last round would be in the same unhappy position as an investor whose stock portfolio did wonderfully for decade after decade but then crashed in value just before he was planning to sell it to finance his retirement.

      Second: Assuming you choose an incremental system, do you want to reward consistency more (or less) than changes?  Example: Let’s say that I’m the Soviet player and that I manage to hold on to Moscow for the whole game.  Objectively, this is a desirable state of affairs (just think of what Stalin would have done to Zhukov if he’d lost Moscow in late 1941), but if the point system only rewards changes (i.e. the achievement of a defined goal), then my success in holding my capital doesn’t give me any points.  Now let’s say that I’m the Soviet player and that, in an 8-round game, I lose Moscow 4 times and regain it 4 times, and let’s say that the point system rewards gains without penalizing losses.  In that scenario, I’d gain 4 points – so I’d be further ahead point-wise than if I’d managed to successfully defend my capital from capture for the whole game.  That would sound bizarre to me.  One partial way to address this problem is by having both debits and credits: giving points for successes and deleting points for failures.  In such a system, losing Moscow 4 times and regaining it 4 times would have the same zero-sum result as simply holding Moscow.  But here we’d face a new question: should two such different situations really translate into the same number of points (in this case zero)?  Or should the point system reflect the view that one of those scenarios demonstrates superior generalship, and hence should be rewarded?  (Personally, I’d argue that the general who holds Moscow for the whole game is doing a better job than the one who keeps losing and recapturing it.)

      I would have phases where I would listen to a ton of Brian Johnson AC/DC for months ( favorites are: Shoot to Thrill, Hells Bells, Nervous Breakdown, Guns For Hire, Deep in the Hole, Snowballed, Sink the Pink, Thats the way I wanna rock and roll, For those about to rock, The Razors Edge).

      Then I would switch into a Bon Scott phase that would last for months as well (favorites are: Let There Be Rock, Walk All Over You, Overdose, Squealer, The Down Payment Blues, Whole Lotta Rosie, Shot Down in Flames, Dog Eat Dog, Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be, Ain’t No Fun Waiting Around to be a Millionaire).

      Oshawa, ON, Canada is once again home to the “4th Annual Field Marshal Gaming Convention” in September 2014. This year we are trying more than ever to help participants find transportation and lodging in order to attend the event. We would like to do our best to organize and encourage A&A.org members to carpool from different regions in Ontario and Quebec this year. This travel campaign should help those who live 2-6 hours outside of Oshawa, and who wish to attend this year’s convention. Please reply and tell us where you live, and if your serious about joining us in September, we can help you with your travel arrangements.
