      I read a book that was a chronological breakdown of the war, instead of the typical theater breakdown you normally get. It talked alot about the holocaust. The stories in that book were very very hard to read. I wish I remembered the name of the book. It was a real eye opening in how Nazi German treated conquered people. Poland was horribly bad. Warsaw ghetto stories were chilling. The book to this day is the only WW2 material I felt I had to just put my nose down and power through reading it because after starting it I didn’t feel right stopping.

      I will also say the firebombing of Japanese cities also qualifies as “the worst of the worst”

      This.

      Von Manstein was the best general of WWII. A very disciplined thinker and an excellent strategist. Adding Heinz Guderian as his assistant gives you a guy with a supreme understanding of tank warfare and a daring risk taker.

      He said best general of WW2. I make no argument that Manstein was the best GERMAN general. My argument is he is not the best of all the war.

      You lost me at best general of WW2. I would have to say that honor goes to Zhukov. And to me it comes down to a simple question. What was the name of the battle Zhukov lost or his failed mission? Manstein as great as he was didn’t reach Stalingrad. There’s a reason why the Russian used to say where ever Zhukov goes victory follows.

      considering that America used the Philippines as a base for fighting in Vietnam it would have been easy for him to see the military action in the area as proof the war was still being fought.

      @Variable:

      I hate to interject in the conversation. You guys are having a ton of fun and tossing around a bunch of great ideas! Just wanted to address our AWOL situation…

      I wish I could say we were on vacation or something. And we did take a few days off for the Holidays. But in reality, we are so busy with day-to-day stuff we can hardly keep up with everything. Mostly my fault I think… Coach works a ton of hours on HBG after his normal 8 - 5. I swear the guy is a machine. He fills all the orders, does most of the research, and deals with the factory etc. I have an 8 - 5 as well that keeps me busy during the day and have been furiously working on AMERIKA stuff at night when I used to be here keeping up with you all. Let me tell you, a Kickstarter is a TON of work, but so worth it in the end when we can deliver a really cool game to the backers.

      HBG has been expanding leaps and bounds the last couple years. We know we’re maxed out with our time but we want to do so many cool things it’s hard to hold back. Hopefully soon we can find a way to dedicate more time to HBG and less to that other “boring real life stuff”  :wink: :-D

      You guys have no reason to defend yourself for being AWOL like I said before it was the holidays and we all disappear every once in awhile. It’s normally what happens when you have a ton of work to do AND a ton of time you have to spend with family AND still have a ton of work to do. You guys work hard we all can tell by seeing HBG’s website and there facebook page. If you guys at HBG took any offense to it all I apologize for that. Keep up the good work I’m looking forward to seeing what 2014 brings up from you guys. And if there’s anything I can do to help you guys out all you have to do is ask.

      @toblerone77:

      For me it’s really a non-issue because I buy some of everything from HBG.  I like the franch blue pieces because I will use them for any number of uses. They might also be fun for a Cold War scenario so personally there are only a few things from HBG that I just don’t like or couldn’t use.

      If I had the money to do it I would buy everything they put out as soon as they release it but unfortunately it’s not the case. I’m sure I could come up with something too. I do place one big order a year at taxes so maybe I’ll think about blue Americans instead of Russians.

      @Yavid:

      I read a couple years back they pulled a German T-34 out of a swamp it’s one of the very very few surviving German T-34. I do believe Germany would have been much better off making a T-34/88 than making the Panther and Tiger

      How did they figure it was a German T-34??
      By now all the emblems will be propably removed…

      I found the article with pics if anyone is interested.

      it seems the markings survived you can easily see them in the pics

      I sent them basically the email on the first page. The only change I made is all I said is I’m short on pieces and didn’t tell them which ones I’m missing. I’ll keep you posted on how that worked for me.

      Every single time I set up France which is done last, I pull the pieces out and go to put the first tank on the board and go  :-( oh yeah they’re Russians. So yeah being able to step back and look at the whole board and smile at how just awesomely cool it looks would be really kick ass. I hate blue Russians so much I’ve toyed with the idea of using the French units from A&A14.

      http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/France_c_209.html

      Why not use a Stuart… or perhaps even a hellcat to replace that T-34?
      Sure, still isn’t historically accurate, but certainly is better than France using Russian stuff.

      I could but I’m trying not to buy anything for it before the French set comes out. I just keep telling myself Patience is a virtue

      I heard the people at HBG are play testing the first 5 expansions this weekend I’m hoping to see some pics of it soon. And I was reading the other day and I had forgotten about this but Spain did send troops to fight Russia in WW2 they were called Blue Divisions.

      I don’t play many games F2F the closest gaming group to where I live is a little over an hour away. So most of my games are me vs. me. I do Germany’s turn one day and Russia’s the next just to keep me objective. Games go on for months. So most of the stuff I do I don’t have anyone else to consider and it’s nice looking at the board and seeing by the pieces that are on it where about in the war I’m at.

      Wow, I’m in the same boat, till I met Tall Paul, but he is still 2 hours away which makes it tough to get a game in, but most of the time. I do the same thing. I’m glad, I’m not the only one. 50th Anniversary Edition takes me at least a week to play, but Global I’m sure takes a lot longer by yourself. I’m just now learning the Global Game and when I get my man cave, I will have the game set up all the time, so I can resume it any time I want, but right now, I don’t have enough room to leave it one place for very long. My wife is not that patient, LOL. :-D

      I do woodworking in the summer time from my basement. So any sanding can be done outside. Winter time hits I set up Global on my Tablesaw and I’m off and going. Most of the time I get 2-3 games in a year and it’s back to woodworking. I live in Central NY so winters are very cold so I need something to do that doesn’t involve going outside.

      Well, I guess nothing says you can’t. You can pretty much do what you want in your games. That is the fun of it. I’m personally mixing all my axis and allies games, so that I can use variation in pieces. I might use a hellcat and p51 mustang on the same carrier for the US. I also might use both the first and second edition Anzac pieces. I’m not going to limit myself.

      I always mix my A&A games been doing it since AAE came out. But I tend to put carrier planes on carriers. and as the game goes on Panzer IIIs are replaced with Panthers only to be replaced by Tigers later

    • RE: German Mackensen Class Battlecruiser

      @jim010:

      Good analysis. +1 to you.

      Had the Germans had these, though, it would be hard to say what they would match up against.  Britain and France would have ships to counter these.  Instead of being an answer to the Deutschland class, they would have had to have built answers to the more powerful Mackensens.  The KGV very likely would have had 15 guns rather than 14s.

      Very hard to figure out what France and Britain would have responded with.  And in turn, whatever the French did would influence the Italians.  My guess is you would have seen a much more aggressive battleship race between the major powers.  The super battleships planed by everyone probably would have materialized sooner.

      +1 you took the words out of my mouth
