For the most part thats what I just said. To sum it up we did D-day not for Germany but for the USSR. And yes I specifically said Germany would not have won the war but it would have been delayed more than just 2 months if we didn’t do D-day.

RE: How long do your Games Last?
So your calling me a newb? Our group has played at least 20 games of axis and allies. Maybe some people actually play faster than others. Just a thought.

RE: IC builds for G?
Well… if your facing a newb at the game then it’d kinda fun to try out an IC as Germany.
-
RE: What do you build in R1? - poll with many options…
I like to build 3 art and 4 inf. I mean you only lose 2 points of defending value versus 8 infantry but you gain 5 points of attacking value.

RE: If newbies are playing their first game…
I think that if one person is a newb in your group they should definately play as Russia. For the most part Russia uses no navy and little airforce (although an important one at that). Besides the first round all they buy is one unit. Russia also doesn’t have those big supply trains that Germany has. The only concept that really needs to be learned for Russia is to stack, trade, and strafe.

RE: 2 Destroyers OR 1 Battleship?
I would say battleship are an underrated buy. Sure destroyers win in that ONE big battle that happens once in about 3 games. However, for me battleships are getting used practically every round. They bombard, and in small engagements you don’t have to replace them.

RE: No variety in A&A
I would practically all my units in Western Russia as Germany and crush Russia turn one or two. Also what seazones could you consider ‘yours’?
-
RE: Germany Strategy concept…
I may be wrong but if Germany turtles up wouldn’t Russia be able to just turn and crush the Japanese offensive?
-
RE: Alaska\USSR connection
Why would you put transports in Alaska seazone??? I mean you have to move your infantry to Alaska and then once they are in Asia they have to move all the way to Russia. You can build your infantry in east U.S. and move them to Canada where they have access to Norway, which is closer to the fighting, or to Western Europe.

RE: Would the Allies win without Russia in the real war?
Actually some historians estimate that without a D-day the war could have lasted until 1948. The Russians tactics weren’t very good their sheer manpower was enough to beat the Germans (at a heavy cost). Without the Western allies all of the German army would have been able to slowly delay the massive Red Army. When D-day happened evil Hitler had to send many of his soldiers and tanks to France. When the Germans fought the Western Allies they surrendered more willingly because they knew they’d get better treatment in the prisons than from the Commies. The Germans fighting on the Eastern front were not so willing to surrender. Some German POWs were not released from Siberia until the 1960’s.
Also to be noted, we knew the war was being won, we just wanted to speed it up to save lives. But mostly because of the nuclear threat, if Russia reached Berlin before we did they would obtain nuclear information (which still ended up happening). Another worse threat was that if Russia could not end the war quick enough the Nazi would develop nuclear capabilities.
Sorry if this was a little off topic and long winded, but when someone make’s a point about D-day not being important, it kinda becomes insulting. Many young men lost there lives at Normandy, and countless others maimed and emotionally traumatized. The allied commanders would not have risked D-day if Russia would have simply “taken Berlin two months later.”

RE: Strange Non-combat with Russia
Iv’e only played classic once. I didn’t really like calssic much. It’s rigged big time for the allies, and the eastern front is just a build up not a constant battle.

RE: Goofy Russian Opener
oops my bad I meant 2 infantry and an art…

Strange Non-combat with Russia
I don’t know if this move hasn’t been posted yet on this board. :|
Maybe you could non-combat move your fighter in Russia to Egypt. Would this be strong enough to stop Germany? Would that one fighter not being there on R1 make a huge difference on the Eastern front? Please be as harsh as possible on this strategy.
-
RE: Goofy Russian Opener
I’d say one fighter is good enough. I mean with one fighter you don’t have 4 infantry on the board, but in an 8 round game that fighter should hit something 6-7 times. 7x3 is 21, that’s a lot of power over time.

RE: How long do your Games Last?
I dont see how taking longer to make your decisions makes you play like a pro. The first round of play is usually extremely fast because it’s usually almost the same for Russia and Germany. Also, if you calculate every little thing then the game becomes more math rather than tactics and strategy. Plus our games are somewhat timed, we’re all kinda jerks so that when someone takes too much time we warn them to hurry up, and if they still hesitate we skip their turn.

RE: How long do your Games Last?
I don’t know how you guys can take so long to play. We can get a standard 10 rounds of play done in 3 hours. You just have to roll dice quick and think about what your going to do before your turn. But there is the exception of certain games where the game drags on and on but for the most part it should be able to get done in 3 or 4 hours.

RE: J1 Kwangtung IC.
I don’t think Japan is ever in a situation where it needs to worry about SBR on mainland ICs. If your playing with LHTR rules then you lose barely any IPC’s a turn. If your playing with standard rules you still shouldn’t worry because if Britain has that many bombers AND he’s using them against Japan, then Germany got a huge break and shouldn’t have much naval competition. Also, after J4ish most bombers will be out of range anyways, I think.

RE: Weapons Development
I like the mechanized army tech, because it would be such a good buy for Germany they might consider investing in it. Japan might possibly invest in it too… but probably not.
-
RE: Transports=gunboats
I think it’s kind of dumb to discuss how realistic this game is, because thats the point this game is a GAME. Things were made the way they were in this game to make it more balanced. If this game was made in complete realism it would be no fun, because everyone one would know the outcome.

RE: Omg, no more infantries…!!
Thats ok I can see where you’d assume this wasn’t post Russia invasion. Most of the time we end the game after Germany has gotten to Russia, usually the game is over. Or vice versa, if Allies in Berlin we usually finish the game. With a few exceptions though. One time Berlin was captured, however Japan had almost all of Africa and all of Asia and Russia. Japan was heavy navy in Pacific and was pumping out tons of tanks in Russia. They invaded Mexico, Panama, Brazil, and Alaska. The Axis actually won!!! That game was like 8 hours it was unbelievable.
