    • RE: What do you build in R1? - poll with many options…

I buy a third fighter because I will have to trade three countries with germany most turns.

R1  I only strafe Ukraine to conserve the preciuos tanks. The following turns I build more- with seven I feel comfortable mostly.
These tanks will help to fortify quickly when Japan comes knocking.  They will be around to prevent Russia to be squeezed too rapidly and sometimes protect Sinkiang.
Afterwards I switch to Inf/Art and if the tide should turn: TANKS ONLY!

    • RE: Can the US have naval superiority?

There is no need for naval superiority. If the US wants to engage in the pacific it only needs a fleet suficiently strong to cover the island hopping. The ultimate goal is not to match the jap fleet and conquer Tokyo, it´s to take Berlin.
Any american pacific campaign should be focused on ipc grabbing. The japanese fleet may attack and though be bound (fighters included) and any captial ships lost in these battles may be replaced easier by the US than by Japan, the Imperial Amry should be too busy to increase asian landholds and pressure to Russia. If ships are bought anyway, that´s good for mother Russia, because it means less  new ground forces.

As naval superiority is not the goal, after US 2-3 half of its income has to be dedicaded to the atlantic, to achieve ultimate victory:The conquest of germany! A pacific campaign should have slowed Japan sufficiently to not attack Moskwa before.

      Best Japanese Strategy:
      expand!
      T1: buy 3 trans
T2: dedicated 2 of them to take hawaii, you threaten LA doing so
T3: split them up to take both aus and nwz

    • RE: Aircraft carriers

As Germany an AC bought on G1 pays off. The western allies will like to destroy it and build ships instead of landing troops. Good deal!
It´s costy but buys time. On turn one Germany destroys all british ships and afterwards it may sail out.
Should Germany be lucky and keep more than two subs after the attack on the brits it has a nice little fleet. It may considerto unify it with the med battleship. When the allies are to strong the fleet may escape to the med. It´s a nice little lure. And as it generally seems impossible to contest a convoy zone without it after T2 it also hurts the allies. Well- at least a little…

As the allies the US or UK has to buy one to secure a combined fleet. Elseway Germany is invited to attack it with fighters and bombers.
To have the same defense value one must build 3-4 dest. A carrier is the more cost effective defense.

    • RE: Alternate German Strat?
      1. I don´t thing your fleet will survive in SZ 7. They won´t make it to the mediterrean, because the brits have to attack it and would be stupid not do do so even if it means losing figs. If this fleet reaches the med+ a jap AC it is the mare nostrum of the axis.

The alternativ is an AC in the baltic and the occupation of Gibraltar G1 with BB+trans+inf. This allows a fleet unification in SZ 7 on G2, which is much more promising. A heavy landing from france to algeria or french west africa is possible on G3 (2trans).
If you buy an additional trans in the baltic G1 the effect will be even bigger. This additional trans may also deter any attempt to attack this fleet.
Tradeoff: Egypt G1 is very risky with tk+ inf+ 2 figs+ bomber. But no Eygpt attack would make all airforce available for the Sealion fake. Uk should have bought more fighters with only the AC bought. With this additional trans it may be forced to add landforces to defend GB and maybe the US reinforces too, because now it´s 3 trans+airforce and as a german player you should naturally have the reputation of a crazy lunatic.

      1. The german fleet in the baltic is dead on UK1 mostly and GB may land in norway unrestricted and rebuild ships in SZ3.  In early game it is dangerous for the british fleet to enter the baltic. This invites germany to trade fighters with a weak british fleet.
But later this is Germany´s weakest point, because the infantry flow to eastern front may be broken by a suicide landing in Eastern Europe.
Generally you should be able to hold the north (W-Europe E-Europe at least)  for quite a while. Japanese fighters stationed in Germany itself are a good thing. Japan won´t need all its fighters if the allies go KGF. Only the first 2-3 turns they are necessary to grab land quickly.

      2. Yes, they may, but not very fast. India, Australia and NZL should be occupied by J3. That´s -6. For Germany it´s a difficult task to do something early on: Egypt is a deadzone, a counterattack with the indian fleet is common. See 1) for a landing on G3. This may force the western allies to do something about it. And you want them to chase you in Africa, because that means less forces in the north. The attack on egypt depends on how risk avoiding you are and if you want to bluff Sealion.

      3. With the british reinforcemts from the north it´s surely going to be more difficult, but that will slow the game and give more opportunities to the axis to grab land. The Brits may reach Caucasus, but that´s 3 turns. If the british forces are concentrated there they are not in Africa and that´s a good thing, because then the US has to that job. Which means: no landings in Europe.

    • RE: Russian winning strategy?

I thing you are right to buy an additional fighter R1. It will help you in the further trade of countries. But just one should be enough. As a Russian you need mass. And for the final defense of Moskwa allied fighters are required anyway.

As you are on defense in most games I wouldn´t recommend to rely on rtl. One should have 4-6 for deterrence. The West Russia stack is where most of them should be stationed. In addition to these I would rely on tanks. Due to their movement of 2 they later help to assist allied defense in India for example or may counter a japanese intrusion. Generally the help to cover a greater territory. With them you are able to create more deadzones. But more than everything else you need inf, inf, inf as fodder.
So I would recommend to buy the fighter R1, after that some rtl. R2, followed by tank/inf in mid game. In the final stage, if your allies played bad or unlucky and the axis is knocking on your door, all inf is required.

And to the discussion in the last post, I thing you should indeed leave 1 inf behind wherever it is not obvisously going to be killed by an overwhelming force. But even then it´s worth to thing about it. I.m.o. the russian job is to keep Germany busy in many small fights, to cause fraction as Clausewitz would say. The more smaller fights Fritz is in the more you may be lucky once. I´m really happy if for example Ukraine remains russian. It´s the momentum to push! :-D

    • RE: A thought regarding initial set-up

Do you accidently have the exact figures somewhere? I´m too lazy to count

To further balance this, I thought about placing 2/3 it in a first set up turn and the rest in a second one.

    • RE: THe $12 you get to start with!!

As Germany I buy an additional trans in the med and save 4.

This makes me able to attack both Malta and Gibraltar. I don´t care of the british med fleet. Should it attack the maltesian des trans combo I have a slight advantage. If they land in Greece, which is unoccupied, fine! Less to fight for Rommel later on. This fleet will be attacked with massive air support on T3. Afterwards I start funneling inf directly to Syria, establishing a supply line via Southern Italy.

On T1  I buy an AC for the Danish Sea  (rest men). It´s effect is big:

      1. forces allies to build capital ships for the atlantic theater, side effect: no early U.S. bombing strat.
      2. makes the atlantic seazone the only place for british fleet to rebuild, that may not be attacked without fear of retaliation.
      3. makes a unification with the BB (now in Gib) possible. With 5 or more subs fodder a hard nut to crack.

Combat: I calculate and strafe as many russian terretories as possible with all tanks available.( risky!!) All airforce helps to kill  british boats.

Non-combat: consolidate land forces in Poland and Rumania.

I played this strategy more than once. By turn 4 a new front opens for Russia in the south, while in most cases I was even able to savely transfer the AC to the most southern Convoy or Gibraltar. On it´s way the sub escort may take some convoys. But mostly I don´t sacrifice them. It´s to easy for the allies to kill a lone sub and cash out normally at the end of their turn. It´s better to keep a strong united navy may discourage Operation Torch.

Well, this is not only about placing 12 ipcs, it´s about what strategy you follow. IMO this one is quit pretty.

      1. delays landings and bomber strat
      2. gives oil money to Germany after an initial delay of the african campaign

What do you think about it? How to counter it?

    • German fleet linked in SZ 7 on G2

Germany bought: 1 AC for the Baltic Sea, Rest men.
IMO it´s no problem to stop this move with the british first turn purchase placed in SZ 6.
Scenario: As  germany I may throw in 2 subs and the tran (Not the Des- it´s needed for SZ 7) plus all airforce available.  That would be 3fighters ( one I always loose in the Ukraine Russian T1 , 2 attacked Egypt to close Suez), a bomber, 2 subs and a tranny vs. 1 tr, BB, 2 fig,  AC and a destroyer, the latter ones soaked 28 of british first turn purchase. That’s 2-3 hits for germany,  3 for the brits R1. Given the higher result R2:  3 fighters and the bomber score 2 hits,  the fleet ( lost tr and des) 3. R3 won´t happen, by then Germany retreats to save the bomber. This way it´s nearly impossible to knock the british fleet out.

So you really want your fleet linked on G2? (At least the Med BB, tran, and the atlantic sub that killed the Gib BB on G1 + the baltic AC and des, if you have to fight the british Block) Your first turn buy should be the AC and an additional sub in the Baltic, 1art and 4 inf in germany. That is very little for the eastern front.
You also have to skip Egypt, due to the fighters needed to discourage the block in SZ 6.  This results in a british med fleet, brr. 2 fig and the tnk don´t need the mini landing t1 by the U.S… Africa should be hold. Bye,bye african ipcs. This is going to be a hard time for germany.

Even with an additional sub and 2 more fig a G2 SZ 6 fight will be tough and result in some Luftwaffe shot down.
The united fleet in SZ 7 may be attacked by the U.S. on T2.
That´s 2 trs, a des, 1 fighter and 3 bombers ( 2 of them bought turn 1) doing 3 damage. That  kicks out the sub and tran. R2 Germany still does enough damage to perhaps end this attack, but will loose more fighters if it wishes to keep AC and BB.
They are going to be victims of the british med fleet in some turns. So you have to run to the Baltic Sea. Not that bad to have 2 capital ships there and build some more subs/trans. You now may counterattack landings in Norway or attack the british fleet that participated in it, o.k. granted! But the negative in it is:

      1. you lost all options in Africa, and your underbelly is now under threat of invasion. Be sure that the U.S. will be back and attack you there soon, the U.K. from the atlantic and maybe from the med.
      2. you lost about half of your fighters and have to rebuild some airforce for trading with Russia. It should be economically well off by now. The little land forces build G1 may motivate it to occupy Ukraine with all forces available T2. To me this is scary.

My advice is: don´t do it if you don´t trust your dice. The strategy is countered by  forcing you to do 2 battles, one attacking (sz6), one defending (sz7), but none really  in your favour. You have to be lucky or you will loose many fighters.
After these battles there is no dangerous german navy any more. Just two capital ships begging for reinforcement. After all it´s just a 2 turn delay till british and american landings begin. Paid with high cost. Meanwhile Germany has to switch to a very limited Fortress Europe Strat.

I strongly recommend this strategy if the U.K. places an IC in India as a NA or Russia attacked Manchuria T1. In this case you should do it. I smell a KJF. Forcing the british player to divert resources is hell of fun. If he uses the block tactic in SZ6 anyway he is enwrapping the IC as an early gift. If not you will have an impressive German fleet. Personally I find this very appealing and would use it in the med where it´s a looong way for both western allies but a short one to the african ipcs I´m so keen on. ;)
