    • RE: Relatives that served in WW2.

My paternal grandfather was CCC before the war, in Alabama/Tennessee, working on the TVA dams, etc.  Because of this previous work, he was able to start in the Army at a higher rank and choose his job (anti-aircraft artillery).  he was in the North Africa campaigns, until ready to move in to Italy and link up with Patton’s 3rd.  However, just before leaving Tunis harbor, he contracted malaria/yellow fever/something and was shipped home, instead.  He was discharged a sergeant, but of which, I can’t recall (I assume buck… E-5).

My maternal grandfather left my mother a bastard.  After my grandmother became pregnant (while they were just dating), the story is that his well-to-do family, from back home in Massachusetts, gave him an ultimatum to just sever all ties.  Thus, he was never heard from again.  He was an Air Force officer stationed in Montgomery, AL in the late 50s.  My grandmother was a WAC secretary, there.  I am sure you can all piece the office relationship puzzle together.  They were both too young to have served in WWII, and I am quite sure he didn’t serve in Korea, either.  However, since my Grandmother had no known contact with him past 1959 (when my mother was born), I do not know if he was in Vietnam.

Anyway, that’s my side, let’s keep it going!

    • RE: How many times do I get to roll in battle?

Thanks, Barney.  You are absolutely correct.  No AA, either.  Roll until all dead, or until attacker retreats.  Amphibious assault must attack until death, cannot retreat in to transports.  That’s it!

Have fun, Matt!  '41 is one of my favorites for its speed and balance *(current errata).

Haha, right, legion.  Russian carriers are a fun piece.  Crank one out if you capture Berlin, just for fun.  You are one of my heroes, owning all the AAA games.  That is my goal, one day.  When I have more disposable income.  :-)

After all we have talked through the strategies in this game, is it, in fact, slightly unbalanced?  Was it not play-tested enough?  I want to respect Krieg and Larry and all those who put effort behind smoothing the edges.  However, we all in this forum have had an overwhelming consensus that the CP are almost always doomed to lose (especially in a well-played game by both sides).  The favor is always toward the Entente.  There have been several ironings-out from the previous AAA games.  Just wondering if this is still young enough to get another look and an updated errata?  Though, now that I am so used to it, it may be tough to give the CPs any extra upper hands, haha (scales may never balance correctly).

Note:  I still absolutely love this game.

    • RE: WWII–-75th ANNIVERSARY POLLS--#16 NOVEMBER 1940

Wow, man.  You really did want the Nazis to win.  You wanted us to help them conquer Stalin, and, in turn, probably cede to letting them take over most of Europe.  Until this long-storied analogy, I believed you were just defending a well-read argument for the hindsight of the goings on of WWII.  I was really intrigued by taking a neutral look in to things, but I knowingly can’t ever choose any side other than my own country in this venture.  I am sure you say patriotism be damned, but out of your “3 evils” of the western allies, Russia, and Nazi Germany, I will always choose the allies.  Sorry, Kurt.  :-(

    • RE: Russia - no matter what the end is the same?

Good idea.  That’s a good background for limiting, as well.  It must have been extremely difficult, logistically, for the Brits.  However, Larry’s reasoning for the big stacks in India is that it represents the entire British Pacific, as Australia, etc. aren’t on the board.  But, yeah, I’m with you on the arty, as well.

Wow, thanks for correcting me, Colonel.  It’s amazing how many times I can read something in the AAA rulebooks/Errata and still get it wrong.

    • RE: Russian Revolution question

As far as I have read correctly, Errata FAQ and all, yes.  They, too, have to move out of the territory within one turn after the RR.  NOTE:  The Allies can never occupy Russian TT, only liberate (I think).

    • RE: Russian Revolution question

Dude, you’re totally right.  It is quite depressing how the odds heavily favor the Entente/Allies.  No matter how you strategize or get lucky on rolls.  Well, getting lucky on rolls is actually a helping hand.  Though, it really depends on how terribly the Allied players play/react/counter the CP moves.

    • RE: Russian Revolution question

That’s absolutely right, legion.  It is meant to be that way.  It can, however, be a two-way street.  Triggering the RR can hurt the CP, as well.  Say, you declare RR rules at the start of the game, then, if I am playing Russia, or the allies, etc., I am going to use Russian troops to represent every neutral territory invaded by the CPs.  Thus, if they (Russians) remain in control of the TT and the CPs can’t take the neutral TT before the RR, that TT is now completely off-limits.  Additionally, the CPs only have one turn to move all their units out of contested territories of Russia, or they are removed themselves, I believe.  Plus, if Moscow is not taken by the RR, there can be a huge money pit missing from the CPs, which they desperately need to continue the long war.

So, yeah, it’s something heavy to weigh before starting games.  I like the discussions about it, though.

    • RE: WWII–-75th ANNIVERSARY POLLS--#16 NOVEMBER 1940

Neither were great leaders, Kurt.  That is true.  I agree with you that Chamberlain may have been the lesser of the two evils.  However, he wouldn’t have survived the cancer, anyway, probably.  Churchill failed horribly with the Gallipoli campaign in WWI and was forced to lead ground troops from the trenches as a “demotion,” which I wouldn’t have put him in, either.  Then, he failed to make any headway with any British campaign for most, if not all, of WWII (Fall of Dunkirk, Market Garden, etc.).  Apart from defending the islands during the Battle of Britain.  Yeah, man.  While a lot of your rhetoric can be hard to swallow, or I may disagree with, I find that these two, including the French, were way more a part of the problems than the solutions for this war.

      He gave cool speeches, though.

Sounds good to me, Front.  That’s why I am waiting for HBG to finish their Global WW1 variant, as well.  They have things like that, like you and your friends play with as house rules.  Make it more interesting.

    • RE: What country had the best trained infantry in WWII?

You are right about the belligerents, Kurt.  Though, it always feels weird reading that the US/Brits fought the French, initially, in French-North Africa.  I like to call them the “traitor/occupied/Vichy French” and the “free French” for the other side.  It just makes me feel better, haha.

    • RE: Central Powers Navy?

Seems the same consensus, all around, legion.  Again, I am certainly with the masses on this consideration.  I was just trying out the heavy naval approach, as originally posted, for effect.  Also, because I like new tactics and mixing it up a little.  But, yeah, I wouldn’t do the same in a game with more experienced players.
