    • RE: AA50 bidding

      @Flying:

      I see no strategy evolving that includes fighting Japan with a large enough effort that simulates the real war. It will be KGIF. I do think KGIF can be defeated by Japan buying large quantities of bombers and using them to blast Russian ICs. This would give the Germans an opening to crush Russia.

      Japan can make America fight.

    • RE: Why the Allies have the upper hand

      @Funcioneta:

      Mod 1941 = modding 1941, giving more units to China and free movements as first priority, ICs to UK in ind, aus or saf as 2nd priotity and figs to USSR as 3rd priority

      I agree that UK needs a 2nd IC. They can be pretty well decimated after the first 2 rounds and without a complex I don’t see any way for them of sustaining any kind of income. A N. Atlantic navy and or bombers can’t hold ground in Africa, Middle East, and S. Pacific. I wouldn’t suggest a mod just yet however. I think UK can get away with placing an IC in any three of the territories you mentioned with support from their allies.

      I’m liking the idea of an Australian IC because the S. Pacific is actually pretty IPC rich when you factor in the NOs.

      I take issue with a lot of things you’ve suggested. For starters:

      @Cow:

      As tempting as it is to use your SZ35 transport for asian conquest.

      What SZ35 transport? That thing is a must-kill for the Japanese on turn 1.

      I think in your case the Allies have the upper hand because you’re much better than your opponents.

      i’m seriously contemplating just buying another copy of AA50A. for the extra pieces, and as they may stop printing it

      Just get yourself a fabber (aka 3d printer):

    • RE: TripleA

      @Cmdr:

      (In case you didn’t notice, I am heavily biased against TripleA.  I think it’s a cute program just like the Disney Car’s video game my 5 year old plays on, but I wouldn’t use it for anything serious.  It’s just too much a security risk and it’s about as flaky as Windows 95b (the one with Active Desktop installed for the first time) was in how stable it is and how well it works with other programs.)

      You can always use a Live CD (try Ubuntu) for anything important you do on your PC (shopping, banking, etc). That way you don’t have to worry about the security of your system.

    • RE: Am I the only one pissed that this has turned into a KGF?

      @Flying:

      I think if I am Japan I send 80% of my fleet to the Atlantic. Go towards India, smash it, then to the Med.

      If you see KGF going you can also send 100% of your fleet to Alaska, smash it, then threaten Canada, Western US and Mexico.

      It can be global war if you make it global war.

    • RE: Strategy: Bombs Over Berlin

      @TG:

      A bomber fleet not only allows the UK to wreck Germany’s industrial center, but it forces Italy to protect the Mediterranean.  A bomber flying off from England can hit any tile in the Mediterranean as long as they land on the Stalingrad airstrip.

      The only problem with the Stalingrad airstrip is that it negates one of Russia’s NOs. Landing in Gibraltar is a better option. That is, if you can defend it.

      This UK bomber only strategy implies a 2 player contest because I can’t imagine anyone sitting down for 4 hours and only making SBR dice rolls. yawn The game is supposed to be fun! If I’m UK I’m building a S. Africa, India, or Australia IC and defending expanding my empire! Axis and Allies is best played 1 player per nation in my opinion.

    • RE: Subs still marginalized…by DD this time...

      @Bridger:

      I always enjoyed the house rule of the destroyer’s ability to cancel sub’s specials being a 1-to-1 ratio.  I.E. a single destroyer cannot stop a vastly larger number of subs.  Are the ASW capabilities of the destroyer endless?  no matter how many fleets of submarines, this one fleet of destroyers can stop all of them from getting a sneak attack?  It seems bad from a gameplay and realism perspective.  Instead, for every destroyer present, one sub loses it’s opening fire/submerge/submersible abilities.  So if you attack a fleet with 3 subs and they only have one destroyer, two subs still get opening fire.

      Heck. Even a 1-to-2 ratio or 1-to-3 ratio would make subs more attractive.

      @Silent:

      The only reason is that even without surprise attacks subs for let’s say 24 ipcs (4 subs) beat 24 ipcs of destroyers (3 destroyers) on both offense and defense on average.

      If the ratio were 1-to-1 maybe the pieces should cost the same?

    • RE: Suggestions for Germany?

      @General:

      If UK buys 5 destroyers turn one, the Battle for the Atlantic will soon be over anyway.

      So will the war for Africa, Asia and probably the world. I think that would be a really bad buy for UK.

      @General:

      So I think defeating the USSR as fast as possible is the only way for Germany to win.

      I think there are several ways to win for both sides.

    • RE: Italy Uses and Reasons for Being

      @Bardoly:

      In our games, the bigest problem is that if UK or US really wants to in the early stages of the game, either one can usually sink Italy’s fleet, and there goes Italy.

      Axis must be employing a poor strategy if that is possible.

    • RE: Will anyone be upgrading the Triplea….

      @Imperious:

      Well that’s a pretty serious reworking… :evil:  I hardly recognize anything i did, sake some of these pictures. I think the Hitler one should get toned down a bit and Il duce’s face should move away from the land so its not overlapping.

      Id like to see the numbers in white as well as text and the sea zones in white lines or dark blue or an offsetting color from the water ( dark or light)

      That was the best spot for Il Duce’s face I could come up with. There isn’t enough land or sea area in that zone to place his portrait with no overlap (his pic is already smaller than the others). He could go in the Mediterranean beneath the boot but that position looks not so good.

      As far as toning Hitler down, when you’re playing the game his ugly mug is pretty well covered with units so you hardly even notice him. I’ll leave it too the TripleA developers to decide what to do with this map.

      The territory lettering and borders aren’t built into the map graphics. They are drawn by the game’s java engine so one of the programmers would have to change those colors. Personally, when it’s full size I think the borders and text look just fine but again I’ll leave it to whatever the devs want to do.

      @Imperious:

      Thanks buddy. But check for updates. i recently made more changes for aesthetics.

      I took the time to convert your map for use in TripleA. It turned out pretty good I think. I liked how you put Stalin’s portrait on the Russian capital so I did that with the other world leaders as well. I’m going to contact the TripleA developers and send them the files. Until then I’ve attached a preview. I had to scale and compress the image to get it under the 256K limit so the quality isn’t the best.

      Great work IL. That’s exactly the kind of map that TripleA needs.

    • RE: Will anyone be upgrading the Triplea….

      @Black_Elk:

      The only thing that bugs me is how TripleA re-draws the lines when scaled.

      The solution there is don’t scale the map. If you have a mouse equipped with a trackball (not a scroll wheel) you can quickly scroll in two dimensions to any point on the map. Initially I thought I would have to play with the map scaled but then I tried a different mouse.

    • RE: Will anyone be upgrading the Triplea….

      @Black_Elk:

      TripleA uses a 3 color Gif image (called a baseline map) which it then processes and breaks apart using its own quirky code to produce what you end up playing with. Its not like you can just use any image you want. Jpegs don’t work, nor do PDF files or PNGs. The game has to be able to first parse the information contained in the baseline map, before you can make it functional. Its actually a huge pain to make a map that works with tripleA (on account of the shoddy raster graphics programming), but I guess I won’t wait on any “thank you” for all the time I put into it, since you obviously think its the worst thing ever.

      All the map really needs is some texture and that can be accomplished with the reliefTiles. The classic map looks decent with map details (view > show map details) enabled. Actually, if you use the reliefTiles creatively I think you can make a pretty cool looking map.
