RE: TripleA standardizationposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
And whilst reading page 2 of this topic…which I didn’t before…I can’t help but to respond to these bogus accusations:
I just want people to have realistic expectations.
Here’s an realistic expectation for you:
“Dear fellow A&A gamers, members of a great community, looking for ways to play A&A online, listen!
A couple of hobbyists and enthusiasts have created a program that easily allows you to play A&A in multiple variants by e-mail, or live online. It even has a lobby to find opponents easily.
Mind you, this is no high-tech stuff, does not have a billion dollar company behind it like other games. So, you could encounter some problems.
but hey, it never hurts to try. And if you do encounter problems, come ask us for help!”TripleA is not conducive to house rules, it’s difficult to edit when you do need to edit it,
Yes. That “Edit Mode” button is very hard to find, and all the other actions you need to perform do indeed require a university grade in programming.
Come on Jenniffer, what’s so had about the editing? You accuse Axis ofEvil for making claims backed on nothing, yet to do the same.in other words, it is very inflexible. You get what you get, in this case, you get exactly what you paid for. (What really sucks is that because it is very inflexible, it won’t even allow you to follow the rules!)
As stated before: What rules!?!?
Yes, some house rules, but frankly, I don’t care. And so far, none of my opponents didn’t either.TripleA has SERIOUS issues with D-Link and Cisco Routers, especially ones with built in firewalls.
Portforwarding, that’s all you need to enable. Works perfect on my Cisco, Sitecom and Linksys router (yes, I have three houses, so that’s 3 different comps, three different houses, and three different Windows’s. Score: 3/3. )
If you have your Windows optimized (I suspect it is because I optimized it so it wouldn’t crash at all, even when some program does something stupid, it won’t crash like Mac OS will crash or an unmodified Windows will) then odds are good you won’t be able to load someone else’s saved games. (note, you should also ensure that everyone is using the same flavor, there’s a couple dozen flavors of TripleA out there, unlike Battlemap or Mapview.)
Define “optimized”?
Define “odds”?
See above my 3/3 score. And I have played about 10 different opponents by mail. The dice seem to be very skewed. Seems to me the first couple to first dozen AA shots seem to have a very high hit rating with the AA Guns. Not sure, but it would be interesting to actually count them, now that I do a lot of SBRs against the computer (because the computer is an idiot.) I’d be willing to make a small wager that the AA Gun hits are around the 80% mark though at least in the first few to dozen shots.
I hope you are not working at some statistics department…of any company.
Or play poker… :S
Check the dev’s site, where a similar claim was made, and how it was bashed with FACTS, not FEELINGS.Basically, if I was forced to use TripleA, I’d require my opponents to roll their dice at Frood or another proven statistically neutral dice server because TripleA dice don’t have a good track record of being accurate. 1/6 does not = 80%. It doesn’t even =30%. It’s less than 20% but it seems like 5 bombers attacking result in 3-4 bombers being shot down by the TripleA dicey.
The experience of 1 player =/= 100 % untrustful program.
Top this all off with the absolute ease of use and ability to modify the game you find in programs like Mapview and Battlemap and you really should wonder why anyone would use TripleA for online game play.
Ease of use?
- TripleA: Download, extract, begin. Very natural feel of menu and navigation, I immediately knew what I was doing.
- Batlemap: A friend sent it to me this week, and I looked at it the first time. First I had to download a program, and then a separate module. (Already 1 point for AAA).
And what do I get? A map. With tiny icons. And no clue what to do.
It’s an okay program to kick around ideas or to waste some time fighting the computer. (I like to see what happens when the AI plays me and I have a rule of no more than 1 infantry purchase per nation per round for myself….normally, you’d lose in a heart beat, but the AI is SOOO STUPID it can’t win even when you handicap yourself!)
See earlier post of Axis. Why bash a stupid AI, when Battlemap doesnt even have any?
And yes, it is indeed a perfect program to kick ideas around. But guess what? it even has a nice feature to allow you to play versus other people aswell!! OMG!!All in all, if you could only put one system on your computer, hands down, without hesitation, I would recommend Battlemap. It’s the standard for online game play at all the major gaming clubs (though they permit other mapping utilities if all sides agree) for a reason. It’s 100% reliable. It’s 100% compatible with the rules. And it’s 100% easier to adapt to rule changes like LHTR, LHTR 2.0, house rules like AARe, AARHE, and custom house rules.
“All in all, if you could only put one system on your computer, hands down, without hesitation, I would recommend Battlemap.”
Good for you! That’s 1 person. Who is entitled to it’s opinion.
And so are we. And we recommend TripleA.But at least we do have some decent claims to back up our recommendation….sigh
The only downside, if you can consider it one and I don’t, is that Battlemap does not have a built in dicey. (Which means your opponent can’t crack the server like they can with the TripleA dice servers.)
Crack the server? What?

RE: A&A Membership ranksposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
I think that any ranking based on post count solely is flawed to begin with…
I could spam the entire board on every topic I have never posted in, and become a bomber in no time…
Would that make me a great member?.. -
RE: Am I the only one pissed that this has turned into a KGF?posted in 1941 Scenario
Random thoguht: Why is everyone always worried that A&A is, and always will be, about KGF?
I mean…I have never seen any other objective for the Axis to go for a KRF. Talking about repetitive…Wouldn’t it be interesting if you would at least have a chance to go for UK?
By either pimping USSR a bit, so it’s not that much of a helpless prey, or by giving the Germans a bit bigger edge against UK, by pimping their initial fleet. (and give them the feared amount of U-boats they actually had).
Or V2 missiles from start. Or whatever. -
RE: IC in Norway for Germany?posted in 1941 Scenario
I like EaglesNest’s approach, so let’s look into it a bit further.
What if, Germany’s main goal isn’t to kill Russia?
What if…you go for a KBF?You have Japan go full force against the USA to keep 'em busy.
You have Italy go for Africa, to soak up Britain’s income.
Seeing the lack of Russia’s initial lack of atacking units, you could easily keep 'em back for a while with little effort. Two worries though. You might be a bit short in Germany’s income, seeing how you neglect their only chance of extra income (the Russian battlefront), and you might not want to build the IC in G1, as that will immediately put all Allied focus on it, without having time as the Axis to prep.
Just some thoughts…

RE: Why are so many people building an Indian IC?posted in 1941 Scenario
And to get back on topic: I think the key difference here opposed to Revised is that in AA50, UK moves after Japan.
If Japan moves away from India, going for the China or Russian route, it might be very liable to buy an Indian IC at UK1.In Revised, the Indian IC pretty much always was a bad idea, as Japan could simply react on it on J1.

RE: TripleA standardizationposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
Karma +1 for AxisOfEvil and Woodstok! :-)
I have only tried to give my contribution!
Note: I have edited my post to solve some grammar errors i found (debug) … now I have “released” the version 1.1 of it… :-D
Anyone could contribute to improve the quality of my posts. Thanks in advance!!! :)

RE: TripleA standardizationposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
Romulus wins this topic.
….albeit a shared 1st place with the actual developers of TripleA. I find it amazing that they take the time and effort to create something, and not ask anythig for it in return, allowing the A&A community to be even more alive and kicking.
Anyone feeling the need to bash such an effort, should remove the stick from their a…never mind.

RE: So, do you ignore Japan completely?posted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
@Frontovik:
I TRY allot of KJF’s, but then i again, i TRY.
What i always notice is: no IC in India, and perhaps none in Sinkiang
if you build one, it’ll die, makin KJF much harder than easier
i always see japan with KJF reach 40, i guess this is normal (They go india full power, china, SFE). but then you need to come up with US and pacific fleet and try to stop them
all troops on EUS should go to africa aswell
problem is, germany gets + 50, but perhapd with some SBR from US and UK, and UK landing north…what’s everybodys opinion?
I just on a very nifty game with the Axis (no bids btw).
And what you describes is what exactly happened. On J1, I didn’t do Pearl Harbor, luring the Allied player into the pacific. Offcourse, the USA needs to invest a whole lot more in the Pacific if he wants to reign those seas opposed to Japan.
So, while Japan was going 50-50 on land and sea units, taking territories here and there, Germany was having a field day now that the USA was putting 100% of it’s IPC’s into the Pacific.By turn 6, the initial USA fleet was vapourized, having taken only 1 Japanese island (and Japanese income at +40), Germany was at +50, Britain pretty much locked into London, and Russia stacking INF in their only territory, Moscow.
At that point USA was unable to stop me from invading Brazil with Germany in the next turn, the 2nd USA fleet would be at leats deminished to 50%, and UK was about to lose their last transporters against a strong German BB, stacked AC, some subs and a destroyer.
Japanese transports would have been ready to head for Alaska aswell, but the Allied resigned.Agreed, there were some lucky rolls, but I think all in all….the USA needs to invest way too much in the Pacific to make much of a difference there, whilst leaving Germany with 1 opponent less.

RE: Rule clarification: FTR lands on newly-built ACposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
Now that we are on the subject btw: Weren’t the LHTR only supposed to clarify and “fix” some rules (like the Op SeaLion upon luck rolling for 1 tech)?
Changing this rule just seems to me like “making it easier”. With other words: This rule does not seem “broken”.The OOB rule makes perfect sense to me. We all lke to discuss about the “reality” of the game, and IMO, during combat and non-combat, your nation’s labour men are working 24/7 in the factories to feed the gigantic WW2-war machine of every nation.
Upon Unit Placement, the ordered material is finished, and slid into the water with (in case of ships offcourse :P ) with a nice bottle of champagne against the bow. Now…if we are talking reality, it would be kinda silly to have your worn out british fighter return home after combat, all shot up and tired, and have british flight control tell them: “Say ol’ chap? I know you’re tired, I know you’re almost out of fuel, but could you just circle above the harbour for a few days, while we complete your landing spot?”

RE: Rule clarification: FTR lands on newly-built ACposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
So OOB, I am right, LHTR my opponent.
Swell, since we made no agreements on that :P
Thanks guys!

Rule clarification: FTR lands on newly-built ACposted in Axis & Allies Revised Edition
Me and my opponent have a little dispute regarding fighters and ac’s. Hopefully someone can clear it out for us.
Situation: UK attacks SZ5 with some ships, and 2 FTR’s which were stationed in Moscow. All surrounding territories of SZ5 are in German control, there’s no AC around (yet).
Now, where do the fighters go after combat? They can’t make it to London, only to sea zone 6.
The british player purchased an AC, and he states that he is allowed to move it’s fighters to SZ6 in non-combat, end non-combat, then in placement unit phase place a newly purchased AC, and have the fighters land on that.However….shouldn’t the fighters have landed at the end of non-combat phase, and thus, not able to participate in the
attack?I know there’s the “fighters can land on newly built AC’s” rule, but I thought that was only possible if the fighter was located in an adjacent territory to the sea zone where the AC will be deployed.
Thanks for any clarification!

RE: This is a Limited Edition Gameposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
Limited my ass! After being sold out since launch date, I will receive my copy tomorrow from the store I ordered it at!
Sorry…has nothing to do with being limited or not…but I am just happy.

RE: Plastic Playing Piecesposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
They are fine!
Don’t worry about it!!!
They aren’t bent nor deformed, but the colors are too similar for those color deficient persons.
Just play the game and enjoy!!
My goodness what a bunch of whiners!
As IL and others stated earlier, for a “normal” game, the lack of quality is understandable.
For a $100 bucks, special, anniversary, SUPER DE LUXE edition…it’s not.And can I have some french bread with my wine please?

RE: Is anyone alive at Avalon Hill?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
@Cmdr:
Maybe we need a fund raiser at AA.org to purchase the rights to Axis and Allies from WOTC/Avalon Hill?
Then we could design the rules without holes, balance the game AND provide quality pieces for a change! Heck, maybe ship it with a CD containing the latest Mapview, Battlemap and TripleA programs as well as all the rules on PDF format?
I bet most anyone would be willing to shell out $150 for a QUALITY game, at least if they are active in the AA community (here, or FOE, DAAK, AAMC or even Caspian Sub.)
Killer idea! lol
-
RE: Is anyone alive at Avalon Hill?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
@Imperious:
WOTC wont be doing anything. Its a waste to even deal with them because they dont even bother to support their games under the guise of “the margin for boardgames is not large enough to make efforts to tell the public about the product”.
Whip out the torches and forkpitches, and let’s storm their HQ!
Seriously, I’ve seen your comments about WOTC, and if all of that it’s true…that’s bull****! What kind of lame company neglects it customers like the way they do? It even gives a bad taste to A&A itself :x
sigh -
RE: Problems using transports?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
Well, there’s two factors you didn’t mention (I dont have the game yet, so I am working from the bits and pieces of info I gathered so far).
- UK starts with 43 IPC
- Germans with “only” 31, and only 5 planes.
That 43 British IPC allow you to buy a AC, and a factory (Eastern Canada). Merge your british remaining fleet with the newly built AC and put 2 Ftr’s on it. This will fend off any german aerial attack, or at least deminish the Luftwaffe if Germany does decide to strike on G2.
On UK2, start building transp’s in EastCan, and land units in London. Move fleet to EastCan for defensive measures, toss in maybe another Destroyer or so.
Sure, it makes it tougher for the British, and far from impossible.
That 43 IPC opens up a lot more other options aswell. AC + BB, Cruisers, whatever…

RE: Plastic Playing Piecesposted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
@Gallo:
@TG:
I’m fro  Argentina, so you couldn’t buy the game when it first come out (I’m talking about AA Classic).
So here is what a group of friends and I did:
we built our own really huge map
we buy a bunch of small scale models, we built and paint them…Pictures or it didn’t happen.
That was about ten years ago (boy, I’m getting older…)
And I’m not living in Argentina anymore.
Maybe some of my friends still have the gameThat is by far the most coolest thing Ive read so far (if it’s true ;-) )
I might try and convince my girlfriend in designing the entire garden into a AA50 map, and have my whacko dad in law create tin scale models :-D -
RE: USA Pacific strategy?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
I partially did this strategy yesterday and it almost worked
“Almost” worked?
Is that better then “it didn’t work”?
Pleas elaborate on what went wrong.Personally, I can see where you are aiming at, but just subs are easy to ignore for Japan IMO. Just make sure you have 1 or 2 Destroyers in your Japanese fleet, and the subs become pretty much worthless, whilst Japan is island hopping or heading for Africa.
