      Well the Russians are a shade of purple! (they’re kinda maroon).

      Also, Russians and Aussies are worlds apart from one another on the map (and allied)… Italians and Russians could meet head to head, are enemies, and a bad dice toss and a little smudge on your glasses, and you got some units confused with one another!

      I was just kinda sayin shades of the same color work for allies of the same nation… like Light Green for Chinese that are allied to the darker Green of the US… that makes sense… Brown Aussies with Tan English are on the same color scale… Grey Italians with Black for Germany is roughly 50 Shades of Grey apart (ouch, bad pun).

      As it stands now, it just looks goofy… someone should be fired, but they probably already left.  :-D

      Well the ANZAC units in 1st Edition are a recolored UK infantry sculpt, but the ANZAC units in 2nd Edition are a custom sculpt, complete with that Aussie campaign hat.

      That’s another good point, that the Italian brown is a close cousin of the Russians and can cause confusion.  Its just really, really odd to me that Italy isn’t grey, it would aesthetically look good too, same with an Aussie Brown.

    • Italians have no factories?

      Unless I’m totally blind, or got a faulty map out of the box, Italy has no Industrial Complex in 1941?  :?

      I just find that odd as can be… Italy has had an IC from Classic all the way through Global SE… I just don’t see why they don’t have one… and since default rules say you can’t even buy a new IC, that means Germany can’t even build a fleet in the Med.  I mean heck, the UK starts with three IC’s in England, India and even Australia, but Germany only gets Germany, and no Italy?

      I know this is a simple house rules fix with “ok, Italy starts with an IC” statement… but I’m wondering why this was omitted from the official version of 1941 in the first place?  Seems really odd to me and hard to justify when you give the UK a plant in Australia of all places.

      Thoughts why Italy doesn’t have an IC (or did I get the only copy of the game without it printed on the map?).

    • Random Thoughts about the game…

      Is it just me, or does it seem odd that Italy’s OOB color is Brown and ANZAC is Grey… shouldn’t Grey be to Germany’s Black what Brown is to the UK’s Tan?

      The colors for Italy and ANZAC should be swapped! [queue riot]

    • RE: 70x32 Maps

      Well I am curious to find out what materiel was used to make your map… I’m guessing pyrene? But I dunno.  Young Grasshopper used pyrene for his maps, and they are of course great.

      The biggest factor about rolling up maps is how well it flattens out when unrolled… you can see in my picture above, I’m pretty happy with how flat it lays… the thing that most worried me about rolling up maps is the “curl” on the ends when in-play.

      When you get a chance, let us know what materiel you used on your maps.

      @84tigers:

      LOL, thanks :)

      I know it wasn’t vinyl because I asked him specifically about that and he said that vinyl was more meant for applying to a hard surface.  I want to keep my poster rolled up in a container and only take it out for an occasional game.

      Looks like I might be able to post pictures now  :-D; let’s see if this works:

      Your maps look quite nice!

      On the other hand… uh oh… one of us was lied to then… I have had all my maps done on Vinyl (outdoor banner vinyl to be specific), and I keep mine stored rolled-up (in map tubes).  Private Panic on this forum also keeps his vinyl maps rolled up as well.

      Here’s my vinyl maps, after having been illegally unrolled (I’m doing it all wrong!).  :-D

      @84tigers:

      He gave me the name of the material, but I forgot - should have written it down.  I’ll stop by and ask him again so I can share it here.

      Hopefully I’ll get to the magic post count soon so I can post some pictures.

      Here, i’ll help cheese you out from 8 to 10 posts so you can link pics of your maps…

      I don’t know all of the types of material people use to make maps, but I’ll list the two I know of… answer “yes”, “no” or “I don’t know” in separate posts as to whether or not your map is made from the following materiel and that will bring you to the 10 needed to post pics!

      Question #1: Is your map made from Pyrene?

      Question #2: Is your map made from Vinyl?

    • RE: Whats everyone's favorite sculpts?

      That’s fine… Just go to HBG’s website, and click on the 1941 parts list… 1941 has some pretty good official OOB units that are different and unique from other A&A games… off the top of my head, some of the stand-outs are…

      Germany:
      Tiger-1 tank
      FW-190 fighter
      He-111 Bomber

      Japan:
      Kongo class Battleship
      Akagi class Aircraft Carrier

      USSR:
      JS-2 tank
      Kostromitinova class Aircraft Carrier

      USA:
      P-40 fighter

      UK:
      Hood class Battleship

      Awww… its’ things like this that should be peeking your interest in equipment… try going to your local bookstore or order on-line something like “Tanks/Planes/Ships of WWII” You might find a new appreciation for your favorite game. I’d share you mine, but you’re across the pond.

      Somehow, Wolf, I have managed to build a fulfilling life without ever buying, let alone reading, such boring tomes. However if you ever venture over the water, I’d be happy to lend you my copy of “1001 things you never knew you wanted to know about Wehrmacht underwear”. I am guessing that’s just the book for you? :-D

      How’d you know?  I actually have “1001 things you never knew about Wehrmacht underwear”… I found the book so riveting I bought the sequel “1002 MORE things you never knew about Wehrmacht underwear” plus the new release of “Toiletries of the Axis Powers: an in-depth study of Germany, Italy and Japan’s most personal sundries”… it’s a must-have read.  I’m saving up for “Toiletries of the Allied Powers”, because I’m sure they had some interesting ones as well.

      @StuckTojo:

      Would love to see a P-51 Mustang if there’s ever a new incarnation of A&A, or a Focke Wulf.

      There is a P-51 available with a custom sculpt from HBG… unfortunately, it’s nearly 50% of the size of other fighters… so tiny.

      As for a FW-190, there actually ALREADY is an official OOB FW-190 sculpt for Germany, and it’s pretty nice… you can get it with either a purchase of 1941, or ordering some from HBG’s 1941 units.

      @84tigers:

      This map is amazing!  I took the file to my local print shop and had them print a copy off to use with my Anniversary game - I couldn’t be more happy with the results.

      Thanks so much for sharing this file.  I’ll try to post a picture once my post count allows me to.

      Spam 5 more posts… 10 is the magic number to link pics! lolz.

      P.S.
      What materiel did you print the map on?

      I know this is an old thread, but someone else rezzed it… still, I saw this and had a chuckle…

      @Hitlers:

      4. As Italy your biggest role in the war is to oust the British from Africa and the Middle East. If you do not achieve at least two of your NO’s by the second round, you are not doing well. If Germany has to send forces to North Africa to help you get rid of the British, you are failing your part of the war. You might as well be as counter productive as the real Italians in the war.

      Like invading countries they can’t beat (Greece)

      @wittmann:

      Tiger (of course).
      Very fond of the Swordfish though.

      Oddly enough, did you hear of the famous WWII English flying ace who used to take out Tiger tank after Tiger tank by dropping torpedoes on them from his Swordfish biplane?

      …Ya, me neither…

      @Private:

      In my game the ANZAC sculpts are of a higher quality than the other nations’. I have no idea why. I am particularly taken with their infantry…

      Maybe because the ANZAC sculpts are some of the newest in the game… the OLDEST sculpts in the game (well, that are still being used today), are the infantry sculpts of the five major powers… those date back to 1984… all other sculpts are newer.

      @Private:

      but then I cannot tell one tank (or ship or plane) from another so lack due appreciation of such units.

    • RE: Whats everyone's favorite sculpts?

      @RougeOne:

      I Know a lot of people don’t care about sculpts but their are some that are obviously worse than others, like the Russian Battleship.

      To be fair, its not like the Russian battleship is a bad sculpt per-say, it has two factors going against it…
      #1, the source material… the Gangut class battleships pre-date WWI and are hideous monstrosities to begin with, they are very old and very ugly ships…
      #2, scaling… the Gangut being a pre-WWI dreadnought is a fraction of the size (historically 181m) as a more modern fast battleship, like say the Iowa class (262m) of the US… but since in-game, they are the same length for gameplay purposes, the superstructure of the Gangut is enlarged nearly twice as much as the Iowa because of the offsetting scales, yet same length sculpt.

      Both of these issues aren’t faults of the sculpt, but rather a two fold problem of the source material, and forced scaling.

    • RE: Whats everyone's favorite sculpts?

      Ummmm… I can’t say “just one”, so I’ll pick one from each category of land, sea and air (OOB of course, HBG custom is another story).

      Land: Tiger-I Tank (Germany)
      Sea: Royal Oak Battleship (UK)
      Air: Heinkel 111 Bomber (Germany)

      Interesting how one little poll about something so seemingly insignificant as AAA becomes a multi-page debate about the merits or lack thereof using calculations, probabilities and psychological warfare… all over a AAA battery.
