    • RE: Custom Bases? (Air/sea)

      @Azpathfinder:

      So … We have a huge vinyl map , custom factories (settlers of Cataan pieces), the IPc poker chips, and war dice

      I’ve looked around and just can’t find any good representations from other sets or other games. Any thoughts?

      I know you’re mostly looking for bases, but on the issue of Custom Factories, I think you can do better than the Settlers of Cataan pieces… Just look on EBay under Axis and Allies replacements or Axis and Allies Factories, you can usually find some on sale (I found a dozen tonight for $5 that are still listed)… they actually come in two colors, you can get them in White or Grey, depending on which game they come from (I have both grey and white A&A factories in my collection)… also on E-Bay, you can usually do a search for Risk Replacements or Risk Cities… from the 2008 Revised version of Risk, they had Cities, that make great factories… are well sized and come in grey… once again, I found some on E-Bay tonight (I have these too).  Pics below.

      @Bass:

      Hehe. To each his own, I guess. ;) If I feel like spending another 1100 NOK on a portable map-version I may yet get one like yours. :) I see however that your map is not the G40 but a smaller version? I’m not sure it would work as well with a bigger map. If you get G40 as well please let us know how that is in comparison to your current version. :)

      It’s still a decently large map… what’s printed on the map matters not.  My maps (I have two) are roughly 57"x30" in size (far bigger than the 41 or 42 maps)… and banner vinyl is banner vinyl.  If it were three times the size, I don’t really see why it would curl any more than it already does (or doesn’t).  Making it wider or longer isn’t going to change the molecular structure of the banner vinyl.  I know Private Panic has also printed on Banner Vinyl and has no problems… I think he has one for Global.  Do to space issues, I have to reuse the counter I put the maps on daily, so being easily removable, storable and able to quickly set back up is important to me, and the maps I have printed on Banner Vinyl look good, play good, and lay nice and flat… I can’t imagine how they would suddenly not sit flat just because it’s bigger.

    • RE: Late Game Italy Strategy

      I would actually love the challenge of playing Italy in a Global 40 game and seeing what I can do with them… unfortunately, I do not have Global, nor do I have anyone around me who wants to play Global… I have a hard enough time finding anyone to come over for 1942.  But the thought of playing Italy in Global, is a challenge I’d love to face.

      @SubmersedElk:

      The point I was making is that when it comes to warmaking on a global scale, there are no good guys.

      Disagree… just because you fight doesn’t make you bad or evil.  When you got Genocidal Nazis taking over countries, rounding up people and killing them, ya… stuffing a flower in the barrel of their Panzer probably won’t stop them… sometimes the good guys have to fight to stop evil.  Back to the point that started this… YES… the Good Guys won WWII.  All current political correctness and rewriting of history to make people feel mushy inside regardless.  The good guys did win.

      @Bass:

      So I went down to the Print Shop yesterday to look at the different materials available for printing. I had asked for something portable so he first suggested outside banner vinyl which could be rolled up like a giant treasure map. But after reading YG thoughts and his criteria for choosing materials I decided that flatness trumped portability and went with a sturdy material called acrylo-something. It was a bit ticky getting it into the car in one piece, but I just fit it in. Set up the pieces when I got home and am quite happy with the result. The friction on the board seems to be a little less than OOB surface so we need to be careful when moving pieces so they don’t go flying all across the board but the esthetics were good and it’s absolutely flat with no creasing. I won’t however take it with me for away games so if we don’t play at my house we’ll just have to “slum it” ;)

      Awww… i’m using outdoor banner vinyl, its’ portable, easily storable, and I haven’t had any issues with it not lying flat… I just roll it map-side-out and have zero issues… this is how a freshly unrolled map looks on my counter… note the edges of the map east and west… this map was just unrolled and units deployed… before a single turn is played it’s completely flat.

    • RE: How often do you purchase new AAA?

      @taamvan:

      The only rationale is to have a vivid, 6 page conversation about a piece that isn’t broken or imbalanced and that nobody needs more than a few of.

      To be honest, I never expected a multi page debate about AAA… I thought it would get a few hits then vanish… I’m as surprised as anyone about this post getting so much discussion.

      It can take awhile for the US to get actively involved in the fighting in any version of the game.  However some might judge fun by having the economic muscle to spend the way they like… so it’s not my job to view what someone else deems as fun… some might enjoy the US economic might as their view of “fun”.

      @StuckTojo:

      If you think the Soviets were “good guys” then I’m afraid you, sir, also have issues.  It was convenient for the Western democracies to let them do the bulk of the fighting for us, but that’s where it ends.

      The Soviets weren’t nice guys either… but the world is better off that Hitler didn’t win… anyone who doubts that, also has issues.

      @Bass:

      Thanks for the feedback YG!

      I’m getting your map printed (hopefully tomorrow or Friday) and this is very useful information. I’m currently wondering whether to get a rollable version or to mount it on a fixed, yet portable surface.

      I ended up printing my map on Outdoor Banner Vinyl, and I reverse roll it (map side facing out when rolled) so that I don’t have any issues with map curl on the edges (it always lays flat)… I bought a PVC map tube for storage, so its very safe and out of the way when I’m not using it.  Very happy with my results.

      YG… sorry to hear about your problems, but thanks for reporting what doesn’t work.

      in real life the good guys won

      The more I learn of history the less I believe in the existence of ‘good guys’ at all.

      You’re confusing current-world issues with 1940s realities… trust me… there were good guys then… you wouldn’t want the Nazis winning and continuing the deliberate genocide of the Holocaust.  If for one second you doubt the good guys won, you’ve got issues.

      @variance:

      The bombers are a good way to thwart sealion if you are 110% certain germany is going to try it.

      If you see Germany buy nothing but ships on turn-1, it might be an indication of Germany’s intent for SeaLion… lolz

      @ShadowHAwk:

      It isnt as bad ad the 1914 game that you cannot even set-up apparently because it is lacking stuff.

      I think you’re talking about 1941?  1941 barely ships with any units out of the box.  I would hope 1914 ships with enough considering its hefty price tag.

    • RE: How often do you purchase new AAA?

      @Baron:

      If you add the 2 hits points AAA to 4 IPCs cost, you get something when mixing with Infantry units which becomes around 55% vs 45% better than pure Infantry.
      So this can be the way to make AAA really a defensive unit depicting stronger fortification and bunkers.

      I could buy the “2 HPs for a free hit” factor if you were talking about Berlin’s three massive Flak towers… and we are talking about Berlin’s three massive flak towers… there were only 3 built like that anywhere in the Reich.  Giving someone a free hit, especially that cheap is a big deal in the scheme of things, and you’re going to have people buying a disproportionate amount of AAA for that one reason.  I don’t think it’s a good idea.  Maybe give Germany a stand-alone Flak Tower unit in Germany that acts that way, but not purchasable and mass produced.

    • RE: French Battleship

      @CWO:

      Most of France’s capital ships were older WWI-era units.  There were only four modern ones – and even then, they all came with qualifiers.  Dunkerque and Strasbourg were battlecruisers. As for the two battleships of the Richelieu class, Richelieu was about 95% complete when she escaped France to North Africa, but not yet worked up.  Construction of Jean Bart was much less advanced; her engines were in place, so she could move under her own power at low speed, but a lot of systems had to be jury-rigged to allow her to make the trip to North Africa and these systems progressively broke down as her journey progressed.  It’s a miracle she made it.

      ^This…

      Also, the Bretagne’s were old WWI-Dreadnoughts that were extremely slow, dated and were in poor condition at the start of WWII… they could not hold up against modern battleships of the major powers (or the older ones that had considerably more modernization work between the wars). The Dunkerques were built to counter the Deutschland class “pocket battleships” which were essentially heavily armed heavy cruisers, and once-again, they were only armed with 11" guns and not a real threat to a modern navy.  Only the Reicheliues were modern battleships, and neither was combat ready at the start of the war.

      If Axis and Allies were of a smaller scale and could reflect different types of battleships and their abilities, then sure, France should get some battleships of lesser quality, but for game balance and taking into effect all the asterisk next to each of France’s *Battleships, one has to just give a nod to skipping over that unit in A&A for France.

    • RE: National Advantage - Italy

      @MeinHerr:

      Being descendents of old civilization, that has held the Med… and also had Europe in its grip during various times, they are a little more practical when it comes to knowing when to cut their losses.

      So Julius Caesar was leading Italy’s troops in WWII?  I really don’t think how the Ancient Romans fought 2,000 years prior had anything to do with Italy’s prowess or lack-there-of during WWII.

      On the whole, Italy performed poorly throughout the war, and had far more debacles than stand out moments. There will always be isolated incidents of bravery and courage with any army, including Italy… but overall, Italy did poorly given the potential and opportunities of their forces.
