    • RE: The Great Italian/ANZAC recoloring project

      This is the paint project in-work… here are the colors I used… primed with grey, painted with Satin Nutmeg and clear coated to lock in the colors and prevent flaking… I’ve never used this particular color before, I bought it specifically for this project… results were a little odd, I seemed to have to redo some units and the clear coat seemed to dull the color an odd way.

      As for painting the units themselves, on such a large scale and to prevent units getting blown around by the spray paint and getting stuck in puddles of paint, I used a non-stick aluminum foil surface with low-adhesive quick-release tape with just enough “stick” to keep them from sliding, but not enough to take the paint with them when you remove them.

      Like the Italian project, this was a six-phase project (just with fewer units)… 1-primer gray one side, let dry… 2-primer gray other side, let cure… 3-satin nutmeg one side, let dry… 4-satin nutmeg other side, let cure… 5-clear coat one side, let dry… 6-clear coat other side, let cure…

      Yes, to make sure each cured before sealing with another layer, there was a full 24 hour cure after both sides were done in a certain color or coat.

    • RE: The Great Italian/ANZAC recoloring project

      Here’s all my ANZAC forces spread out… I have no clue how many come with Global, as I don’t own Global, but like my earlier mention that I had an idea to make a “flavor nation” out of the Italians for 1942, I had the same thought for ANZAC units in 1942, and as I’ve moved on to Anniversary, I still don’t have a proper ANZAC nation, but I still enjoy using flavor units for British/UK units in and around the ANZAC nations of Australia, New Zealand and Canada… so for my needs, I have all ANZAC units that get placed in and around those areas in Anniversary, plus a few extra in case someone builds a factory there… I do realize I don’t have things like Battleships or Carriers, but I just don’t see anyone building them for the UK in those places. For me, ANZAC are flavor units only just to spice-up the UK player and for that reason (once again) I wanted the colors to just be a tad-off (but noticeably different) than the default UK unit colors. I even went a little further to “subdivide” the ANZAC forces into ANZ with more British-type equipment and Pacific attire (you’ll see them to the left in the below picture) and more Canadian forces with American influence (you’ll see them to the right in the below picture).

      Oh, almost forgot to mention… I never liked the Australian infantry that came with Global… they were like 10-foot tall amazons… since I was repainting units anyways, I decided to go with some 1/72 model infantry and just paint them to blend with the other troops… I chose Airfix Australian Infantry…

      These are my full-sized unit bins that I use for my other five powers for all my main Axis and Allies games (1941/1942 & Anniversary)… Had to make one for Italy, including a custom flag sticker for the bin.

      This is the paint project in-work… here are the colors I used… primed with grey, painted with metallic silver and clear coated to lock in the colors and prevent flaking… I’ve used this metallic silver on other plastic mini projects before and it has performed beautifully under heavy use and never flaking.

      Below are close ups of the Italian Army in all its Metallic Silver glory… and YES, that’s a much larger pool of units than what comes with Anniversary… not sure about Global, but its  more than enough for my needs (on purpose, I never want to run short). These are all Global 40 Italian units, with the exception of six M14/41 tanks from Anniversary (combined wtih six M15/42 tanks from Global). I actually started this project as German-controlled “flavor” units for 1942, but when I got Anniversary, they just took over for Italy proper.

    • The Great Italian/ANZAC recoloring project

      Alright, I said this long time ago, and I actually did this project some time ago… I had some friends asking me about it and suggesting I post my results on the forum, so here goes.

      A brief recap… the colors WotC chose for both Italy and ANZAC has bothered me for a very long time… Italy the most, as its colors are just far too close to Russia who is both an enemy nation and one they are often in close proximity with (and often directly fight against)… Italian brown just doesn’t look like an ally of Germany, they look more like a satellite of Russia… it’s just wrong on so many levels to me… and being OCD as I am, it is probably “just me” that it bothers, but for a long time I schemed and plotted to get rid of the Italian brown and replace it with a color that would look nothing like Russia, be unique in its own color scheme, but still “mesh nicely” with their German allies. In the end, I chose a “Metallic Silver”… though really any grey would have sufficed, but I had a lot of metallic silver paint floating around from other projects and I knew the color I had worked well with plastic miniatures so I went with it.

      As for the ANZAC player, they weren’t quite as bad color-wise, but once again… grey just didn’t work for me (especially if I was changing Italy to silver/grey)… I always thought the ANZAC player should look something similar but different to the UK player. I really wanted something in the “khaki” range… a little darker than UK biege, but not dark enough to start looking like those brown Italians… obviously, if I was changing Italy to Silver, that opened up the “brown” hues a lot more… but I really wanted ANZAC just a few tones darker than the UK forces… in the end, I chose “Satin Nutmeg”… couldn’t really find a Khaki that I liked.

      Below are my results for the entire project and how I made it happen…

      @Young:

      Those look awesome wolf, I would be very interested in getting some of those.

      I know you’re in Canada, so not sure how/what your limits are to shopping or ordering online, but here’s a link to the organizers from Home Depot online… if nothing else, you get “the official” name.

      I use these for the nation trays
      https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-7-in-6-Compartment-Small-Parts-Organizer-83039N13/204536852

      I use this for the accessories

      Of course, use them as you will…

      As for my flags, I just used Vistaprint and made some small rectangular product labels and you upload your pictures into them… perfect for national bin flags… I made sure to use era-appropriate flags (like the 48-Star American Flag)

    • RE: Wolf's unskilled, on a budget, modest home, custom A&A mods!

      I know everything is about the current versions of Axis and Allies, but trying to get my younger kids to play A&A, I wondered if they would like the original better than 1941 as a learning tool and intro to the game…

      I dug through my attic to find my old A&A Classic only to find it had seen better days… while the box and board were in pretty good shape, 20 years of military moves and over 30 years of aging took its toll on my components… the Styrofoam trays (that I never liked even in the 80s) were simply a poor storage solution for moving about, and the pieces had all been tossed and turned inside the box over the years and the plastic chips had all faded and discolored with age… a lot of my infantry, especially the Germans and Americans for some reason, had apparently undergone serious combat… many cut in two, men missing limbs, most had their gun barrels broken off… stupid useless Styrofoam trays!  I curse you! I also had the original First-Edition rules, which were hugely unbalanced in favor of the Allies with the Commander-in-Chief rules.

      Well obviously it wasn’t really in playable shape. I didn’t want to try and get my kids into A&A with what was left of my version of Classic… so… time for some upgrades and refurbishments…

      1st, I ordered a bunch of replacement units off of E-Bay (HBG doesn’t really stock much for Classic)… I got all the units back up AT LEAST to original game numbers, and in some cases more (where I remembered nations needing more… like a lot more Russian infantry, more German tanks, more Allied Bombers), next I ditched all the terrible Styrofoam trays, replacing them with more modern plastic storage bins… I chose the Husky 7" bins for the nation trays (and one Husky 6" bin for the accessories… and yes, I know the 6" is bigger than the 7", that’s just what Husky calls them)… and yes, everything fit in the original box (the nation trays all fit on the bottom, I place the board on top of them and the rules/accessories bin on top of the game board)… I also replaced all the chips in the game, ordering plenty of modern grey, green and red chips and placing them in the accessories bin… finally, I got a hold of the 2nd-Edition rules off E-Bay and replaced my 1st-Edition rules.

      All-in-all, very happy sprucing up the old original classic game more in-line with my more current versions.

    • Modernizing A&A Classic to more current standards

      Just though i’d put this out here in this dusty old forum… but I never liked the original Styrofoam trays… even when I was a kid in the 1980s… i though the spaces were too small and too hard to pull units out of, and most glaringly of all, they were what I would call “Gravity storage” trays… meaning, if gravity wasn’t your friend and you flipped over or carried your game box in a direction different from a certain gravitational pull, all your units would pour out.

      Anyhoo, I procured some Husky 7" trays for the five nations and one Husky 6" tray for my accessories bin from my local hardware store, slapped some stickers on them for some pizzaz and got a much better looking and storing version of A&A Classic.

    • RE: War and Peace (2012)

      The kids are doing great… I actually got them “into Axis and Allies” by getting them to play War and Peace and the original 1980s A&A, which I have put a lot of time and effort into sprucing up (my old copy was a mess)… I also got Anniversary and am working on multiple projects on Anniversary… got a map printed, having a custom A&A dice tray made, and am repainting units, along with my other customizations.

      On War and Peace, I did a lot of work on it as well… new storage trays, new leaders, and this map project… i’m attaching (a shrunk-down) version of my printable map… my original file is much larger and in PNG format. The game map for W&P is a bit of a mess… the box it comes in is much smaller than a 1941/42 A&A box, so the cardboard map is folded down to 8 separate sections with a lot of creases and “flappy parts” for a lack of a better term, that after having gotten used to printed flat vinyl A&A maps, I just have a hard time being happy with this 8-part floppy hot mess. I scanned all 8 pieces and have been stitching them together in a paint program… from the sample below you can see i’ve pretty much eliminated the board crease completely from France… i’m still working on other parts of the map… I eventually intend to have the map printed on a custom game mat… I already had one done in this manner for King of Tokyo, so it will work well on War and Peace… i love the canvas and rubber map, having it done at this shop:
      https://www.inkedgaming.com/collections/custom/products/two-player-custom-playmat

      Anyways, here’s the pics of my in-work map project (shrunk down) and my Napoleonic miniatures… oh, they are Reeves 54mm lead toy soldiers… they have some weight to them, but they are designed for play and (obviously) stand-out on the map when leading forces… as with many rare things, I found them on E-Bay… they ain’t at my local Walmart, that’s for sure. I spent a lot of time searching for the right pieces to lead my W&P armies. My “back-up” plan was some pre-painted plastic Napoleonic toy soldiers I found… they weren’t “technically” Napoleon and Wellington but they would have passed as leaders and looked a lot better than the tiny plastic cardboard chits that come with the game (lame).

    • RE: War and Peace (2012)

      Hey Private Panic… I recently got this game… like what everyone else is saying, this is Axis and Allies: Napoleon… it flat-out is an A&A game, just set in Napoleonic Europe. If you like Napoleon and you like Axis and Allies, this is a must have game. It had an original (and apparently limited) print run in 2012 and I don’t think its been reprinted, so with time, this game will probably become harder and harder to get… if you (or anyone else) is interested, now is the time to act if you don’t already have this game.

      I wrote a review on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OU6NZA2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1#customerReviews

      I’m also modifying this game as much as I can to improve it… from cases for the units and other things I normally do… the game comes with tiny cardboard counters for Napoleon and Wellington which I found sad… I replaced them with 54mm Napoleon and Wellington miniatures and I’m working on a printable version of the map which I will put on a canvas with rubber backing game mat (I know a shop that makes these)… unfortunately my map making skills may not be up to the same level of others on this board, but I am trying… I made 8 image scans of the map and am trying to stitch them together as best I can. It’s a work in progress, but this is a great game.

    • Tired of the Trolling which I guess is okay with most members here

      Ya, I’m done… this is my last post… I guess people like Gargantua and Lord Curtmungus are found amusing enough by enough people on this forum that this is accepted… over, and over and over and over, I’ve seen post after post after post of these two going after fellow forum members, and pushing and prodding left and right. Too many shrugs, too many people that think its okay because a year ago he did something helpful once, so constantly finding ways to annoy other members on a daily basis is now excused.

      I have better things to do with my time than to be constantly harassed and targeted by trolls… enjoy the site folks, there’s good people here, I will miss many of you, but I’m tired of all this trolling that is applauded by a few too many for my likes.

      Whatever,

      I’m done.

      Not coming back… I suppose that will make a few people happy, but don’t care anymore…

      i noticed ill be able to use my original foam trays from the 80’s edition

      For Anniversary?

      How on earth would you fit the over 600+ units from AA50 into the 5 foam trays for the 300 units in the 1980’s Classic edition… it barely fit them? What about Italy?

      It would be nice if that could be done, but I just don’t see how that would work.

      @Bob_A_Mickelson:

      I’ve been looking to add these custom IPC poker chips to spruce up my game, however they are quite expensive.

      http://iwillnevergrowup.com/shop/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=50

      How many poker chips do I need for global 1940? Will I need more than one set? What is your guys experience?

      Thanks in advance.

      I have the set too… I also found the default set a bit short… if I’m not mistaken, I have the default set, two sets of the 25IPC add-ons, and I custom-ordered an extra ten 10IPC chips (as mentioned by others, contact IWNGU directly to get IPCs in a non-set fashion, as I did by ordering extra 10IPC chips).

      Bottom line, I was happy with the number of 1s and 5s in the default set, but needed more 10s, and got two sets of the 25s.

      @tytyboogie:

      What info did WOTC require besides shipping address name and number and what not? Going to call today my game arrived im assuming with the same indents and damage to the storage boxes and possibly rulebook as this appears to be a common issue and was wondering if they asked for pictures as mine is a xmas present and its still in the packing box wherever the wife hid it.

      I saw an unboxing video, and he had the same “flaw” in a storage box… I think the problem is self-evident if you look at the unboxing video… there is a disposable cardboard “X” for lack of a better word that is packed in the box that sits on top of the storage boxes inbetween them and the box lid… presumably to prevent the box lid from caving-in… of course any pressure on the box lid then presses that cardboard-X and it puts a dent in the storage box(es). I think this is what’s happening.

      @BIG:

      I have a fave used bookstore here in Toronto that from time to time has some real gems, for $9.99 I scored a mint copy of a table top book/biography, ‘German U-Boat Ace Adalbert Schnee . The Patrols Of U-201 In World War II’ -
      fantastic book about one of Germanys finest U-Boat commanders to survive the war. its filled with a lot of informative photogaphs of his u-boat service and his time serving besides Donitz before being given a Type XXI at the end of the war, and his life after the war. a nice big book, as informative as a large picture book can be and a must for anyone with a love for all things U-Boat.
      its written by Luc Braeuer

      Imagine how the Battle for the Atlantic would have been if Germany had Type-XXI’s a few years earlier…
