      @wittmann:

Today, the 4tb March, in 1193 the great Saladin died.
he was the greatest Muslim commander of his time, maybe ever.

So the best was 820 years ago….

This is the last day for the Alamo letter to be on display. The famous letter written by Will Travis 177 years ago has returned to the Alamo for the first time since it was sent out. It has been on display from the 24th of Feb. thru March 7th. I saw it on displayed on live video like some kind of shrine. There appears to be constant security right there with it at all times. I did not know that the letter still existed.

      I know!
Wondered if this thread would have been cut, as I mentioned another member’s name.
I do not want to be accused of bullying, but wondered if this having two accounts was acceptable.
We are, for the most parts, friends, so strange behaviour like this should be censured.
      I think.

Thanks for finding time to comment Cromwell.
The 30th Jan, and this event,is not an anniversary I forget: it is Al’s father’s birthday. He has always enjoyed its place as he  is  anti-monarchist and anti privilege, despite his (state funded) public and Oxford education. It is funny as his wife’s parents worked in the colonies after the war, so politically they do not see eye to eye!

Battle of Brienne was fought today, 29th January, in 1814.
(I had never heard of this one.)
The town is in North East France and the battle here took place because the 6th coalition invaded  France in the hope of overthrowing Napoleon.
As the roads were bad because of the weather, Napoleon was able to catch his old enemy, Blucher, with only one wing of his army: the Russian contingent under Lt Gen Baron Osten-Sachen, about 17000 men. Napoleon had 30000 on hand, but after his earlier reverses most were straight out of training camps.
Napoleon pinned down Blucher’s forces with Grouchy’s Cavalry and Horse Artillery, while Marshal Ney took the Young Guard into the town and captured the Chateau with the aid of Victor’s 2nd Corps. That night Blucher was forced to withdraw, after nearly being captured withGeneral Gneisenau. (Napoleon also narrowly missed capture.)
      Blucher’s losses were 4000 casualties to Napoleon’s 3000.

Yes there is a point.  That point is WHEN YOU WIN.

I’m sure Eisenhower would have stood trial and been executed had the allies lost the war.

Interesting that at this point there are 2 votes down.  I wonder if you had said “I’m sure Churchill would have stood trial and been executed had the allies lost the war.”  Would you still get two votes down?  Perhaps Roosevelt and Churchill were in the same category and Eisenhower being a military man is different.

A heck of story.  We talk about heroes and bravery now, everyone is a hero it seems.  No, going after a pirate in two small ships with no cannons so you could engage in hand to hand combat….THAT is brave and heroic.

      Great story witt

Am setting it up now and we should get 4 hours play tomorrow morning before my parents bring Maddy back to us. She will probably want it packed away soon after!
Will give her a DD, not Sub, as I will refrain from attacking US fleet that way, 2 Inf for Russia and one in India and Egypt. That ought to do it.
Have fun on AAA, eating Japan dry of Twinkies. I have never had one.

Thank you. I did not realise it was a mind game!
I am going to go with your idea, but with my S France instead of Normandy.
Then look at both Taranto and SZ92 skulking as UK options.
I think I would rather they ran for Canada and then when Sealion succeeds Canada, out of the generosity of its heart, agrees to absorb the UK and its colonies into the Greater Canadian Empire. And everyone is happy!

Today, the 11th November,  in 1839 the Virginia Military Institute was founded in Lexington, VA. Francis Smith was the first Superintendent.
VMI is known as the West Point of the South. Unlike West Point, graduates are not obliged to join the armed forces upon graduation.
In 1851 T.J. Jackson became a professor of Arithmetic and an Artillery instructor. Fifteen of its graduates became  Confederate Generals and many more Regimental Colonels. Rodes and Mahone are  probably the two most famous Civil War graduates(both Major Generals). In 1864 the cadets were called upon to fight at the battle of New Market(Southern Victory). VMI was later  damaged by Union forces.
George Marshall of WW2 fame, later a 5 Star General, was a graduate.
