    • RE: Carriers

First off has it been confirmed that the cost of a carrier is going up. If so I must have missed that post. Could someone clarify.

Before you discuss lowering the def of a carrier keep in mind that if you take a hit with your carrier you can’t land your planes back on it, unless your at or can move to a port for repairs. That I know was confirmed. If your defending you wont be able to move your carrier so its possible that you could lose your planes even if they survive (no place to land). A carrier able to take 2 hits will be bitter/sweet.

We have played on 1/2 a ping pong table before. I guess we’ll just have to take down the net now. :-D

      @idk_iam_swiss:

I know this is off topic but does anybody know what the turn order is going to be?

I guess Japan start first. Then China, then UK and USA last. Wild guess.

You guys forgot Anzac, when would they go?

Sorry for being off topic, this question deserve its own thread

That would be my guess as well.

    • RE: Dice

      @blister911:

We use a mix of dice colors (white, red, black, dark blue, light blue, green, purple, orange, and grey).  Each one designated for its hit value, special attack, or unit differentiation (subs, super subs, shore bombardment, SBR, etc).  That way we can roll the entire attack or defense at once.  It gets interesting when rolling 15+ dice all at the same time.

That sounds pretty cool I’ll have to try that.

    • RE: What power is your favorite to play?

I chose Germany/Italy combo if I’m axis. I like the way you can use these two powers together. I like to look for other strats then just try to take out Russia. Some games I try to keep pressure on Russia, but I’ll build navy/air just to see what kind of trouble I can give the UK/US.
If I’m allies I like the UK. Cuz I like the challenge and all those choices. UK also seems to have the hardest time getting its NO’s, at least early on.

    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

      soul/omega:
I’m not one to put historical accuracy before game play. I think if you can get both however its better.
The OOB way allows the invader to take all your stored ipc’s and then get paid for the tt at the end of his turn (to powerful IMO). It also hand cuffs you to just the units you have left on the board, with little chance of doing anything else. I think as the game has matured into more tt and AA40 will offer many more tt and IC’s this rule has grown outdated.

Thats why I proposed to still hand over all your money. I just don’t think you should give it all to the enemy. The guy that took your capital is getting money from you (ipc value) and also getting paid by the bank at the end of his turn. I think this is fair, and not quite so game changing (better for game play).

I’m also thinking of the guy that just got knock out of the game. If he could still participate even at a reduced level (get paid & purchase units) and contribute to his own liberation it would be also be better for game play IMO.

Now if you like shorter games with a knock out punch like take a capital essentially win the game then no this rule would not be for you. I think it would extend the game.

Other things have also come to surface because of the larger board like a rule for the straights. This is going to have historical purpose, but will also be good for game play IMO. And who knows maybe the Bismark/Tripitz will be represented in AA40 in the Baltic (1 BB) w/protection from the new straight/port rules. See we have progress :-D

Personally I like hand over the ipc level of your capital to its new owner (maybe even another 5ipc’s or so-bonus for taking capital). I could live with hand over the rest of your money to the bank. That way you could not purchase new units next round (you would have no $). You can do combat, non-combat and still collect income to buy units the next round. This would show the delay of getting back on your feet and is not that far removed from the original rules. It also helps somewhat with the huge swing in power the enemy would get for game play, and allows you to continue the fight. If you don’t have another IC you should be able to purchase one eventually. You could also increase the cost of units showing your displacement. Where it would get trick is if the enemy took another IC from you, would the process be the same? Its not really your capital. I would think not to confusing.

Yea could be treated like an NO. Add up your VC get like 1 ipc for each. That way you would also track how many you have.

I think VC should take on more of a role in the game other then what they do now. They should allow certain advantages. Like you can deploy 1 inf w/o IC. They could make IC airbase and ports cheaper maybe because of infrastructure. They could also represent a type of blockhouse rule were they get a def bonus of some kind. Something like that would give them more value in the game. They would have importance even if you don’t play with VC conditions.

    • RE: Maginot Line

I can’t see the chimps allowing Larry to make official rules for other companies (they consider competition) to make such a thing. Just look what they did to triple A. Maybe they will put out some kind of expansion pack of there own later (doubtful). It would be cool to have official LH rules and new sculpts like heavy tanks and tech upgraded units etc. It would also be cool to include some logistic stuff like tankers, oil rigs, and merchant ships to protect. The new map for AA40 could be a corner stone for the future. The chimps should take advantage of it and produce their own expansion sets for AA40 as they do for their other games. If they don’t be assured someone will, but it won’t be endorsed by LH.

FMG is already working on new sculpts for AA games, but now with AA40 just around the corner they should IMO (unfortunately) :-( delay it so they can bring in more units that a larger map will allow for. Of coarse such a project takes a long time so FMG’s time table may fit this anyway as I have not followed their progress closely.

Ok, lets get past the flip the board thing. There were a lot of other good points involving gov in exile.

As johnny said France will have all the units as anyone else. I also thought Larry shot down the Vichy thing. Said it complicates things to much. Maybe he’ll change his mind and make it an option in the global game or later in an official LH erata.

The last post I saw from Larry on his sight blockhouse is out. Could be a cost thing come down from the powers that be. IL is willing to go toe to toe all 15 rounds so it could happen (very thin chance). If the blockhouse piece doesn’t make it maybe just a control marker type disc could be adopted for the global game rules to keep cost down. I would be ok with that. Keep up the fight!

    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

Yea the blunder thing can really hurt when you have to hand over all your ipc’s. Rarely will you recover from that. We had to make a flip the board house rule. If you flip the board during the game you have to pay everyone at the table $10.00 (and not ipc’s) :x :x :x

I’ve also played where both sides lose a capitol in the same round. So an exile rule would have been good, as the out come wasn’t all that clear.
Lets see how an exile rule would play out for each power not knowing how many IC or where they will be in AA40.
*US- easy just HQ in LA
*UK- easy just HQ in Canada or Anzac(assuming there will be IC there)
*Russia- easy if you still have one of your other IC’s. If you lost Moscow chances are you already lost your other IC’s. Do you hold on to your part of ipc’s until your friends lib one of your IC’s?
*Germany- will most likely have options with its other starting German IC or in France, hmm German HQ in Paris thats just not right  .
*Italy- I would think Italy will have two IC’s 1 major & 1 minor. I would think Rome (major IC and capitol) will be in N Italy as you wouldn’t want the allies to take S. Italy and sack the capital for game play (or maybe I’m wrong on this). So where dose Italy set up its gov in exile if you already lost S Italy. Like Russia hold on to its part of the ipc’s and wait for Germany to bail it out?
*Japan- as we know Japan is one tt, it should get at least 1 other minor IC on Manch. So I guess it could set-up gov in exile in China, that just sounds weird.

It is very possible you won’t have a place to set up a gov in exile so do you just hold on to you ipc’s until the calvary arrive.

If you have no place to set-up your own HQ can you set-up your HQ at an allied capitol (just a holding place for your saved ipc’s, can’t collect any more or spend it). The UK took in many of these gov in exile. What happens if their capitol is also sacked.

What happens if the enemy sacks your temp HQ also, then are you done or do they only get 1/2 your $ again? I would think you hand over everything this time.
I can almost see why Larry didn’t want to include this, he didn’t want to get writers cramp and add more pages to the rule book.

    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

I like the gov in exile rule. You should be able to continue the fight if you have the capability. I like hand over 1/2 your money, or hand over the ipc level of your capitol tt + $5 whichever is greater. Part of your money going to the enemy makes sense as he will plunder all he can. Think of all the national treasuries (gold) jewels and art that Germany took, and sold via Switzerland. It also shows that the gov made it out with some of its riches, or hid it to smuggle it out later.

Each power is going to have more IC’s at set-up (2-3 on average). So the new game will be screaming for this house rule as I think Larry already said no. There is noway the US would have thrown in the towel if DC fell. It had to many other war making options as did all the allied powers, mainly because of the vast land masses or other holdings.

I would think any of the tt that are lib would stay in your allies hands until your capitol is retaken or you move ground units into those other tt(so you have the chance to get your other tt back along with your IC’s if you want to).

I’ve been in some games that one side or the other did something stupid :? and left his capital wide open and lost it. Like Uk is left week and Germany happens to role paratroopers. Either that or the dice were just evil  and their 3 tanks took out your 10 units. If you had gov in exile you could over come these setbacks and continue on. Of coarse in most cases it will make for a longer game.

Well in Larry’s eyes an island is a land mass that is surround by one sea zone(check US island bases NA in AA revised). So technically speaking thats all that matters. Land based fighters will be able to defend the sea zone around that island if it has an airbase. In Larry’s eyes Japan is an island, where Australia & UK are not.
