    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

We are all debating how England would find a way to continue the battle through its commonwealth, and set up a gov in exile in Canada had Germany invaded and conquered the UK . IMO I think thats right. However Hitler offered an armistice several times and did bring England to its knees. He obviously thought that a deal was possible. He also approved the plans for Barbarossa at roughly the same time for the following spring. I would think he thought that both the European allies would be out of the picture by then, as he already took Paris and had London on the ropes.

If a deal was worked out would it have been simply for UK to stay out of German affairs and more or less become neutral, or would it have been similar to the French treaty. If a treaty was to be reached would it have allow a partial German occupation of The Island Nation (I would think not). Would such a treaty lead to a split in control of England itself and the Commonwealth. A divided English Rule would have caused chaos in those uncertain times, as many of those countries were actively seeking independence or would have felt betrayed. Even at this darkest hour the US still didn’t give its total support. I think negotiations would have been just a stall tactic by England to catch its breath, but who knows when politics come into play.
What about its fleet. Would the terms have forced ships to return to English ports, or would English admirals have headed straight to the US or other friendly ports like the French did earlier in its confusion.
      Just some food for thought.

    • RE: Britain or U.S.S.R

      I chose Britten.
At the time Hitler had Stalin believing they were allies. Hey bud lets just carve up Eastern Europe and share its wealth. Hitler could have probably got more concession from Stalin in this region through political means. Hitler approved the following spring invasion plans for Barbarossa right after the fall of France. I think Hitler thought England would be out of the picture by then. He even offered a public armistice to England in July of 1940 , which Churchill rejected almost immediately (recent change in Prime minister).  I don’t think in 1940 Hitler was thinking lets start a two front war next spring. He was thinking I have almost a year to finish off England then I’ll turn on The Beast To The East.

Germany may not have been able to attempt a ligament sea lion at that time but they may have been able to starve them into submission. Germany had already defeated France (their only European ally). If Hitler would have been able to keep his alliance with Franco (Spain) and took control of Gibraltar, then much of the UK fleet would not be able to come to its rescue. It would have been bottled up in the Med. With things being so tight in the UK, Germany/Italy may have been able to lock up North Africa. This would have been the gate way into the Middle East (Suez). Yea now you have the UK starving and its main oil/fuel source is gone for its mighty navy and the RAF.  Who knows if Germany would have been able to keep a successful blockade going through the winter, by spring of 41 with a big blow to its resources and the Middle East just falling into axis hands what England would have done. He took his foot off the throat of the UK and let it breath.
Hitler also blew it when he switch targets to civilians instead of mostly military in England. I guess he wanted to get public pressure for peace but it backfired, it also allowed the UK to regroup its forces.

When Hitler awakes from his coma his generals most likely declare him incompetent and have him put in some institution, allowing Germany to win the war.
Either that or he has them all shot for not following his agenda and once again the axis lose.

    • RE: China and what should be done with it

The French fleet is a big question in AA40. Historically it was like the 4th or 5th largest navy in the world. It was very modern, although its capital ships didn’t have the tonnage, due to restrictions of the time.  Much of it was destroyed by the Brits (July 1940) or scuttled by the French (Nov 42) to keep it out of axis hands. Parts of it were incorporated into allied fleets. A few ships were used by the axis. I wonder if the axis will be allowed to make an attempt to secure the French fleet in this game, or at least part of it.

I believe Larry said the UK player would most likely control the French units, including the navy. This and the fact that he also said Vichy would not be represented in the game leads me to believe that set up will reflect only about a 1/3 of the French fleet if that much and control granted to UK once Paris falls.
It would be cool however (even as a house rule) to roll a dice for each French ship on the board at the time Paris falls. 1-2 axis; 3-4 ally; 5-6 scuttle it (remove from play) or something along those lines.

      oztea,
Yea I like that as well. With just some minor adjustments at set-up it seems to be very fitting. I was thinking in AA50 that def of shore lines is adequate, but was wondering if it should apply to all art in AA40. In AA40 your going to have much more fire power coming at you with the new units introduced. Being able to set up def on tt that don’t touch the sea may be necessary.

I did a couple solo games when I first got AA50 it seemed to help. Its kind weird when you set up a strat then change it just to mess your self up.

Well you will be skipping their turn if Germany does what it is supposed to do and crushes them early. After that the UK just uses whats left. It will all fall to those evil dice. Just hope the UK player that will be rolling for France doesn’t get lucky at the same time the German players luck turns south :x

1 vs 1 is great, most of the games I played in the early days were that way, but 3-4 is more entertaining.

    • RE: China and what should be done with it

I think the turn order in the global game will be similar to AA50(41)
      Germany
      Russia
      Japan
      UK/Anzac  & France
      Italy
      US/China
Your going to want Germany & Japan to go early as they were the aggressors. Every game I remember Russia goes pretty early. I can’t see them going after Italy. I don’t think you would want G & I to take their turns before Russia, to much of a double team.

Anzac may or may not be its own power in the global game. (most likely not)
France won’t make much of an impact after the first couple rounds, or until some one liberates them. The UK player will likely take over their navy and other units anyway.
Russia and the US won’t be able to attack early on, they’ll just buy units and move into position. China will likely have its role reduced and take its turn with the US again.

I would think Pacific would be best played by 3 people.
      1-Japan  2-UK & Anzac  3-US & China.

Well I guess after looking at the AA40P map again, maybe the Anzac do get control of the Dutch islands. That would just about double their income. It would also leave UK mostly on the Asian continent w/about 15 ipc’s.

      molinar13 said,
From what I’ve read the ANZAC player will only have an IPC count of less than 15. With that much money I dont think you would be able to build up a powerfull navy to challenge the Japanese.

I don’t think the Anzac will start with that much it looks to be under 10 ipc. Kinda like Italy in AA50. Unlike Italy it looks as if Anzac won’t be able to earn income as it takes over Jap islands as most of them appear to have no value, or they will just be liberating. I don’t see the Dutch falling to the Anzac, those islands should fall to the UK but who knows. I think the only way Anzac increases its income is through NO’s. Its possible convoy zones could also give them $, by keeping them clear of enemy ships. At this point we don’t know how convoys work.

    • RE: Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

I think a Sea Lion attempt may still come down to who gets control of the French fleet. If it stays w/allies, if it is scuttled, or if Germany has a chance to take part of it over. If the axis (and thats a big if) gets naval superiority in the Atlantic (remember US isn’t there yet). If Italy can take out Gilb through Spain or by amphib allowing its fleet access to the Atlantic. Axis should be able to add to its fleet in the Atlantic via French IC on the coast. Germany should also have its own coast line to the North Sea if the map is to be accurate. Of coarse a full scale Sea Lion will leave Italy weaker in Africa and the Balkans. It will also allow Russia time to bulk up. Taking out the UK early would defiantly set the allies back. It would be some time before what was left of Britain & France could come together and make a liberation attempt if at all. They may have to wait until the US enters the war. I would think that a successful Sea Lion would bring the US into the war.

      quote from Larry
Hey Emperor_Taiki, East Africa – how will this be represented in AAE40?
Well I think so. I mean the French, the Italians and the British are all represented down there. I mean there’s Kenya, Tanganyika Territory, Rhodesia, Union of South Africa, South West Africa, British Somaliland, Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and an administered from London - Belgian Congo, and that’s just the British stuff… Hope this answers your question.

Sounds like Africa will be a cesspool, with a lot of fighting.

      @johnnymarr:

I have seen the Dutch Roundel on the map so I belive they are in.

      Per LH
which powers have their own “Income/economy”, they are:
      US
      UK
      Russia
      France
      China
      Australia/New Zealand (ANZAC)
      Germany
      Japan
      Italy

the reason for the Dutch roundels has not been explained but i’m guessing it will be similar to Canada

All the Canadian Provinces are represented . It has its own national control markers. Totally controlled by the British player

For some reason I was thinking the Japanese invaded Dutch East Indies before the attack on Pearl. I now see it was about a month after in Jan of 42. I guess its possible the Dutch will be represented in AA40P on a small scale , but it is more likely they will be like Canada, totally controlled by the UK. Bummer!

    • RE: More Defensive Artillery

The new offensive abilities like tac bmr & mech inf in AA40 will tilt the advantage to the attacker.  Some type of def bonus to counter it will be needed. Making art more versatile is a good way to do it without adding new pieces. The pairing inf/art to achieve this goal has precedence and will be easy to implement. There are a few ways floating around to achieve it.

      1. This tread pairing inf/art giving inf +1 in def as well as offense is a good rule IMO.
      2. As read in another tread pairing inf/art allowing art to fire its 2 preempt (casualties don’t fire back) is also a good idea.
      3. I also like art being able to fire over boarders (maybe w/rocket tech) 1 for 1 w/inf going in.

All in all there is a lot of talk about art, meaning many think there is room for improvement here. Much of it focuses on def against amp assault.  I just hope through testing and reading all these post (lot on Larry’s sight also) they do something here.

Japan could take on Russia in the global game, but Russia won’t be represented in AA40P. I still think you may be able to attack the Dutch in AA40P with out it being considered an attack on UK. That way you (Japan) wouldn’t bring the US into the war yet. I think the Dutch Isles may have their own sculpts (French blue maybe) but can’t add to their army (no IC), and only fall to the English once they are liberated. You have to allow Japan to build up its ipc level before it invites  :-D the US into the war.

I also think Switzerland should be impassible, although Hitler had invasion plans for the Swiss. I just don’t see the need in game play to go through it. Other neutrals have more strategic value.

Besides China you have the Dutch. The Dutch could still be a patsy that Japan takes out early to boost its ipc’s. Its possible that attacking the Dutch is not an attack on UK. In Krieg’s hint he said they won’t be considered neutral, but he didn’t say they would be Uk either. I think they will be controlled by UK, but it’s possible they are not UK units.
