    • RE: Lets Talk Paratroopers!

      Well at least paratroopers will be in AA40. Quote from Larry from his sight yesterday 11-19-09.

      "I can tell you this… There will be Paratroopers. They will be one of 12 techs (which are all pretty close to the Anniversary game’s techs.)

      I call out Paratroopers because they have been radically changed from that tech in Anniversary. Infantry (up to 2) can be flown, to join an attack, if that location is within a 3 territory/sea zone range. They don’t need bombers or any other aircraft representation. They must however be on a territory with an airbase."

      I like what he did hear, not using a bmr as a transport plane is a much better way to go. I would have maybe liked paratroopers not be a tech (like mech inf now), but at least they will be in the game. It also gives them some limits.

      Quote from Larry:
      “By the way… AAE40 begins shortly after Dunkirk. Germany, on its first turn will probably be launching the Battle of France. Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Norway have just been successfully invaded and are occupied. AAP40 will also begin at around that same period (19 months before Pear Harbor). The Japanese can attack any time, but are they really ready? As the controlling Japanese player you decide when and how.”

      This should clear some things up.

      @FieldMarshalGames:

      I would suggest that the LOW COUNTRIES should start as Neutral if this game starts in May 1940.    Also NORWAY should be a Neutral as at the time of the invasion of France.  The issue was not yet decided and the British/French were still engaging the Germans in Norway.

      From what I remember the game starts in the mist of the evacuation of Dunkirk (I’m thinking the first week of June). By this time Germany already had control of the low countries. The allies withdrew from Norway the end of May and it fell about 2 weeks later, so it to should be in the axis camp.

      Oz, I guess you meant Sweden instead of Norway.

      I still don’t think Sweden will be worth more then Norway. They should both be 3, and Finland at 2.  I don’t see Larry changing to much from what he used in AA50.

      I Know the iron ore in Sweden was a huge bonus to the axis, but they were handing it over to Germany anyway, so I don’t see why it should be worth so much. I could see it if they refused to trade with Hitler, but that wasn’t the case. Maybe tie all the Scandinavian countries to an NO or use convoy boxes to reflect the amount of trade that went on up there.

      I wounder if you will be allowed movement on the northwestern coast of Africa. The Sahara goes to the coast in most AA games of recent, and is impassable. Would give new meaning to an IC in Brazil. You would be able to get troops into North Africa quicker w/ a safer route.

      What’s with the map?

      BD, oztea started this post with a Euro map, he has just updated it. It gives us some idea of what to expect as we get more details. I think its cool that he tweaks it along the way as he gets more feed back.

      Keep in mind that it is all speculation, I wonder when we will get a look at the actual Euro map. It probably won’t be til spring next year, a few months after the release of AA40P.

    • RE: France

      xzorn,
      I think Maginot Line is incorporated into the Paris territory. Larry did say that France would be well represented. Larry also said the Germans will have the tac bmr/tank attack pairing at set up that will simply over power the French (Maginot Line), as it did in WWII. The Germans will also be staged in the low countries just above France showing its ability to blitzkrieg rendering the Maginot Line as an out dated defense. I would have liked to see a buffer territory between Western Germany and Paris that would have represented the Maginot line. Many think this area should have included the all hailed blockhouse unit, but it wasn’t meant to be. I think Larry wanted Paris to fall fast as it did, with out the possibility of a major delay throwing off the timetable. The way I look at it is the Maginot Line was not going to stop the Germans as their new blitzkrieg technique proved by bypassing most of it.

      PS: I gave you a +1 karma for your second post, now you have twice as much good karma.

    • RE: The Dutch, Canadians, & French

      The French Indo China was under Vichy rule after the fall of Paris. Vichy allowed a partial Japanese occupation. There where some minor skirmishes but for the most part control was given to Japan with out much of a fight. It looks like Larry is going to mimic this buy putting no forces there. It also allows him to avoid the “Vichy” thing. Besides I still think they’re going to use the (French) blue for the Dutch in AA40p. That would allow the Japs to invade the Dutch w/out bringing the US into the war, as the Dutch won’t be a neutral or controlled by the UK, or Anzac at the beginning anyway. The only other way to handle the Dutch would be to also leave them defenseless.

      You know I took it that way the 1st time I read it but now I’m not sure if Krieg was talking about the Russians or the 2 French territories.

      @Krieghund:

      @Tralis:

      A: The USSR spaces in AAP40 are said to be completely off limits unless playing AAG40. Obiously there is no USSR player in just AAP40. That’s all well and good. What about France? Two of the spaces on the board are French, one of which was historically conquered by the Japanese. France can’t be a player, but it has to be able to be attacked. Anyone know how this is going to be done? I would assume it would have peices just sitting there, except what color would those peices be? Would they include French peices in the Pacific set just for Indochina?

      These territories will be undefended.  Japan can claim them for free if it does so quickly enough.

      I see it as, if China has a fighting chance the US & UK may stick it out in Asia. In 1941 version the allies go KGF and just pacify the Pacific because its easier to go after Germany then Japan. With just some minor changes at set up China can be more playable. Give them more units (42 set-up), protect the tiger (Sikang), allow them in Burma, and give them a way to get artillery as they do in AA40 (via Burma road bonus). This might keep the allies interest in the Pacific. It would also slow down a 3 prong attack on Moscow.

      That’s why we don’t think China should be just a walk in the park for Japan. Conquering China was one of the Japanese goals of expansion. It didn’t fully achieve that goal in WWII. If China falls early then yea Japan is at Russia’s back door. China should be more then just a stumbling block, and if left unchecked should be able to chip away at Japans income. It needs some artillery and the tiger to do that.

    • RE: Rules for subs in AAP40

      That’s workable. Anything would be better then 1 DD see’s everything right out of the box. You could even house rule something like that into AA50, just make it part of the radar tech. 1 for 1 until you get advanced radar(tech) then 1 DD see’s all subs. Its even kinda how the radar tech works. You fire AA guns @ 1 until you develop radar giving your AA guns a kill @ 2. Early in the game subs could easily out number DD’s, but you would still get limited detection. I might have to try this next game.

      This would also work when air units & DD attack subs. Matched up 1 for 1. Excess subs would be allowed to submerge, unless the power w/DD & air units also has radar. At that point subs could not submerge til the DD is destroyed, just how it is now

      Come on give subs more bite! :evil:

      Check out this link from pictures of AAP40 the Dutch are pie shaped red, white and blue roundels. There are 4 islands including 1/2 of New Guinea. The 1st & 3rd pictures show it best. If you click on the pictures it blows them up.

      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=15181.msg479755#msg479755

      Its the same islands (purple)that Bob A Michelson pointed out on the map of the original AA Pacific game earlier in the post.

    • RE: Rules for subs in AAP40

      I agree AA50 rules for subs are the best so far. It defiantly makes them more of an attack unit. The lower cost is way cool. The addition of convoys will give them even more of an aggressive role I hope.

      The only part that “might” need improvement is detection. I still say that subs were much more deadly early in the war. It took the UK/US some time to develop tactics to launch a successful anti sub campaign. The use of advanced radar/sonar along with depth charges/forward devices is what turn the tide. On another note Japan was way behind in detection, and to give them the the same advantage from the get go seems wrong. I know game balance plays its part here. I wouldn’t want game play to suffer. Larry did say there would be tech in the AA40 global game. Maybe there will be limited detection out of the box, but tech will give you advanced sonar/tactics. I also hope he develops a 3 branch tech tree so you can narrow down your advancements, ground, air or sea. That way a power like Russia might look at developing its air tech w/o fear of getting navy tech.

      Yep, that sounds about right. The Dutch units may be of another color (maybe French blue), because we know they are not neutral or controlled by the UK or Anzac. At the beginning nobody collects income from the Dutch isles. You can’t add/purchase more Dutch units (would be cool if there was a small Dutch navy for Japan to crush). Japan will need to invade them quickly (round 1) before the UK or Anzac can reinforce them. This will keep USA from entering the war early. This will also allow the Japs to build up income. At the same time the Japs will be taking parts of Russia (uncontested), and invading China. When the Dutch Islands are liberated I would think the income would be given to the Anzac regardless of who does the liberating for game balance.

      Re:China
      At the very least you should use the 42 set up for both scenarios. Then I would like to see the set up for Yunnan and Sikang switched, giving the flying tiger protection round one on Sinkang W/2 inf. I also think China should be allowed in Burma for sure, maybe FIC. I also would like a Burma road bonus like in AA40. If the allies have control of India, Burma,Yunnan (maybe include one more adjoining Chinese tt) then China can upgrade 1 of its popping inf into an artillery that turn. Personally I would like for the US to be able to replace the Tiger but I don’t think that would fly. I would be ok with just moving it at set up or adding a couple inf to it’s tt at set up as Larry has mentioned awhile back.
