      @ Jennifer - how did UK fleet end up in Z3?

      UK would have to be smoking something . . .

      Or UK really, REALLY wanted to land in unoccupied Norway and didn’t think to at least block the transport, submarine with the Russian submarine.

      Jenn, the only thing that blocks a sub is a destroyer.  The Russian sub is useless to block the sz5 subs from hitting sz3.

      Ahhh, that’s good news.  :-)

      I don’t think I’ll be getting any more sets.  I just cant see going out buying basic units (like the Sherman) all over again just so I can get the new-and-improved sized version.  And I don’t really want to have a mix.  I’m too anal to have a giant Sheman and a baby Sherman in play at the same time.

      Mot

      The new set has a lot of new stats for the old pieces and it looks like almost all of the vehicles have been repainted.

      David, don’t hold out on us – how do you know this?  Can you post any pictures?  Anything :?

      @U-505:

      What’s wrong with Japan leaving units behind in the Pacific to prevent a midgame US purchase in sz55. That’s what I usually do. sz34 doesn’t need more than 1 CV, 2 BB, 1 or 2 TP’s so I just leave the other CV, DD, and/or SS in sz50 with at least a couple fighters within range of the CV just for that reason. The US would have to spend their entire income to overwhelm me and even then it won’t be hard to add a few naval units to counter it.

      U-505, you should play Darth and see if you’re strategy works against his.  I’m betting it does.

    • RE: US IC in Norway?

      Bean, it seems your questions are, 1) US vs. UK taking Norway and building an IC there, and 2) Norway IC vs. just shucking with boats.  On #1, it really depends on Axis strategy and the dice, to some degree.  If Germany falters early in Africa, British income could potentially reach the mid-30s by turn 5 or so, in which case, Britain will have a little extra income to support a Norway IC.  In some games, though, America ends up taking Norway through a weird set of circumstances, and when that happens, I am more than happy to build an American IC there.  And why bother shucking over an American AA?  Why take up the transport space?  Just move over Britain’s and build another to replace it, if needed.  If the German bomber is dead, though, don’t bother.  So I guess in most games, I prefer UK to take Norway for income reasons.  I don’t really go out of my way to let America take it unless, as you say, Britain is tied up elsewhere.

      As for buying an IC versus just shucking, I look at it this way.  To get 3 units from America to Norway, America must invest in 32 IPCs worth of boats (2 to get them to UK and 2 to get them to Norway/Karelia).  Granted, that actually gets 4 units over, but that’s the investment that’s required.  Compare that to 15 IPCs for the factory, and the fact you’re building on the front, and it’s an easy decision.

      @ncscswitch:

      Southern is NEVER irrelevant.

      Let the US build there, with their TRN shuck extavlihsed, and Germany is in trouble, with ot without Russia.

      Well, all I will say is that I am currently building in Southern right now as the US in my game with No Mercy, and the outcome of the game is still very much in doubt.  I will probably take Germany in a couple of turns, but whether I can withstand the Japanese onslaught (he has somewhere around 50 tanks, at least pre-Moscow invasion) remains to be seen.

      @ncscswitch:

      When Moscow is immune to a 1-2 Axis punch it is over for the Axis.

      When Eastern, Southern, or Western remain in Allied hands for a full turn it is over for the Axis.

      When Germany builds in Caucuses, and Japan has Novo and Persia it is over for the Allies.

      General rules…

      I don’t necessarily agree with Eastern, Southern or Western – it’s depends on the situation elsewhere on the board.  If Moscow is about to fall, then Germany only needs to hold on long enough to let Japan leverage her massive economy.  At that point, Eastern-Western-Southern is irrelevant.

    • RE: Carrierland

      Bean, I think you’re making too much of this two-turn delay thing.  If Germany buys two carriers, I frankly don’t care that it takes an extra turn or two to get there, because when I get there, Germany will be VERY THIN on defense.  32 IPCs on carriers = 9 infantry and an armor, almost a full turn of builds for Germany.  That lack of troops has the secondary effect of preventing Germany from trading Karelia-Belo-Ukraine with Russia, and thus costs Germany even more income and, hence, troops.  Unless Germany gets lucky in Africa, Germany will be sucking wind by turn 3 at the latest, and RUSSIA will be in Eastern Europe (or trading it with Germany), instead of Germany securely holding Eastern Europe with a massive stack.  If you don’t think that creates a deep hole for Germany, then please sign up for the League and play me – I’ll show you.

      Why do you assume that you HAVE to take out the German Baltic fleet?  If you continue funneling troops into Europe via Norway, and play aggressively with Russia, you will eventually wear Germany down to the point where she will have no choice but to retreat the fighters from the Baltic to protect her capital.  At that point, the fleet becomes a very easy kill with combined air and fleet.

      Japan taking Brazil falls in the same category as Japan taking Alaska – annoying, but usually not a big deal.  It’s a great diversion tactic, however. :-D

      I have a few to add:

      1.  If it’s a vaginal birth, especially in a birthing “pool”, I DEFINITELY recommend the enema (think about it).
      2.  Bring a good book for the delivery – it could take A WHILE and you’re wife may not be all that chatty under the circumstances.
      3.  If you have a weak stomach, do NOT look over the curtain if it’s a caeserean – but if you don’t, it’s kinda cool to watch.  (Think Alien :lol:).
      4.  Catch up on all the movies you want to watch and visit all your favorite restaurants now – “dinner and a movie” pretty much went out the window after birth #1.

    • RE: German Offensive Troubles..

      @Romulus:

      A good game has good mechanics. A very good game adds theme and distinctive flavour to the good mechanics.

      I like A&A also for the feeling that it gives during play. So in my personal gaming experience I like A&A because it requires accurate planning and effective logistic to win. At same time it gives different emotion depending on the nation you are leading.
      Naturally you may create your own map, simmetric and balanced for example, but I believe that in such way the game may loose some of its feeling.
      Moreover, even if the possible “grand strategies” (higher level planning) are somewhat reduced I think that there are a lot of space for creativity and fantasy for concretely implementing those strategies. In each turn several different moves may be performed with diverse pros and cons.
      It is similar to Chess: the “grand strategy” may be only aimed to mate the opponent king (KillKingFirst KKF :) ) but you have space for different way of reaching that objective.

      I completely agree – each country has decisions to make which are not automatic, even when playing an overall strategy of KGF or KJF.  Within KGF, there are a variety of ways to go about it.  Do you go the Africa route or the northern route?  Do you push back against Japan or fall back?  What did your opponent do?  What opportunities do your opponents moves create?  I’ve played more than 30 games on this forum and every one was different.  It’s why I keep playing.

    • RE: German Offensive Troubles..

      I agree with Axis_Roll.  Once you learn how to play the Axis properly, the Axis can be tough to beat.  But playing “gambits” with Germany is not how you do it against decent competition.  You need a long-term strategy and the patience to invest in the right purchases to make that strategy pay off.  You also need to recognize Allied mistakes when they make them so you can take advantage.  It’s a far more balanced game than A&A Classic.

      Yeah, sorry – a little tired here.  We don’t play tech really at all on these forums.  It’s bad enough that it’s a dice game without gambling on whether you get the “right” tech.  You said something about American planes flying unchallenged — that’s what made me think about the NAs.

    • RE: Any good tech stories out there?

      If you are referring to the OOB NAs, nobody plays the Superfortress Rule from OOB for that very reason – it’s very unbalancing (not to mention absurd) that American bombers should be immune from AA fire.  That, and it’s flat wrong historically.  American bombers got the WORST of the flak because we Americans, unlike the British, insisted on bombing in broad daylight, making the flak gunners’ job much easier.
