      “Villa Midea” in Croatia, Dalmatia, Brac island. Room 205. When you get there, ask the receptionist for ext 2944 and say Filone sent you. No worries, she’ll give you a key.

      GG

      You neglected to give a date - or are you recruiting volunteers for the Croatian voluntary organ donor service?

      Alas no. I love the organization, but the “no-cheese-eating” policy is lackluster. I will give you a date as soon as I can finalize details with Filone…

      GG

      Open a French branch of the organization and you can eat all the cheese you want and drink all the wine you want!

      . . . . and surrender all you want! :evil: :-D

      @Guerrilla:

      I’m sorry I haven’t been around… Intro?

      I am not hired help, and I love Axis and Allies. I tend to enjoy the “spokesperson” approach if you want to call it that. But to a group that has made a website the best of it’s kind out there, that isn’t hard, it comes naturally.

      I joined this site in Aug. 2003 and learned most of what I know about the game from here. I joined the Moderating Team in Jan. 2006, when I had around 2000 posts. At the time I was still in High School so my contribution to the team was more steady. I have contributed to the main site, and hope to put more there in the future. At the end of the year though, I moved, and am now getting ready for College and I am starting a business, so that has drained my time. It has to the point where at most I was just moving threads in out of place forums.

      But I’m trying to get more involved… Like this thread… I’m glad you guys who have joined in the last year have taken that initiative to keep the site thriving. When PD was active we had much content there and limited content elsewhere, but everyone coming in has stepped up and brought the axis and allies back into the forums as well as the older members. Lets keep this rolling, and the content out.

      What I mean by limiting content on Political matters is not directly avoiding topics of that nature. IF you know what you are going to post is going to start a debate that ventures into the realms of politics, don’t start it…

      GG

      So, GG, only one more question – when and where is the corporate retreat?  (and have you reserved my room yet?) :-D

      Seriously, GG, can you give us a little introduction, especially for those of us who have been on this site for months, but have seen, like, 3 posts from you that whole time?  Do you play this game or are you just Mr. Jensen’s hired help?  Just curious . . . :|

      How can you not know GG?  He has like 3000 posts you know!

      That’s exactly my point – he musta done all his posting in, like 2004 or something – I NEVER see him post around here . . .

      I’m surprised the 8 bid is so popular – I must be under-bidding! :lol:

      In my experience, bids fluctuate from a low of 5 or 6 to a high of 9.  For me, it depends on whether I prefer playing the Axis or the Allies.  I think good players can win with almost any bid as the Axis, whereas less experienced players probably need the greater options available in the 8-9 range.  Just my two cents.

    • RE: Rate me.

      I’d say your quite aggressive, based on your play in the tournament.  Your game against Switch, from what I saw, was a lucky win for you.  Any one of those attacks on his German fleets could have gone badly for you, in which case the outcome would have been very different.  From the title match, I will say the attack on EI was just a bad attack – poor odds and little long-term benefit.  If you counter Egypt UK1, then you might as well support your efforts in Africa rather than splitting your forces between Germany and Japan.  Another thing that made no sense for me was your purchase of TWO aircraft carriers for Britain.  Big waste of money IMO.  One AC alone is of debatable value to UK, at least in that game.  Two just cost you 4-5 land units.  Note how thin the UK was in units in that game – that was no coincidence.  (That did not lose the game for you, but it didn’t help.)

      Overall, aggressive play can work – Switch is a very aggressive, and quite successful, player.  I’ve won playing very aggressively at times.  I suggest, if you want to stay aggressive, study the games of the more aggressive (and successful) players and see what they do differently.  Or, better yet, play them yourself.  That’s the best way to improve your play. :-)

      @Bean:

      7 IPC England would play differently due to build limits.

      Good point – so would Japan at 10 IPCs and EI at 3 (instead of 4) IPCs.  Every territory’s value is set based on strategic considerations and game balance, IMO, and only loosely on historical value.  How else to explain Italy being valued the same as France, for goodness sake!

      One interesting concept would be a bidding system where, instead of bidding additional IPCs in hand to spend, you bid for additional IPC value on Axis territories.  So, for example, a bid of 4 would allow the Axis to add a total of 4 IPCs of value to one or more of their territories.  Now THAT would impact game play, don’t you think?  And in unpredictable ways too.

    • RE: Was it worth adding ART to the game?

      @Ender:

      Here’s an idea: ART could act exactly like battleships - they would do an opening fire salvo before your Inf rush in, but then stay behind in the country they attacked from.

      After all, that’s how they operate in real life - your artillery stay back from the front lines, you don’t have guys dragging them through the mud toward the enemy line. I guess it depends whether you see an attack on a country as a single battle or as a whole “campaign” - if a campaign, then it makes sense that the Art go along for the ride.

      Not dragging artillery through the mud?  Actually, that’s EXACTLY what they did with them, Ender.  You are talking about artillery like it’s a ballistic missile.  Artillery is useless in battle if it’s not damn close (if not at) the front lines.  The 88’s, as opposed to his tanks, were Rommell’s primary weapon against the British during his Desert Campaign, and you can bet your @ss they did not remain stationary through that campaign.  Certainly, they were not shooting at tanks in El-Alamein from Tripoli . . .

      @magnomanx:

      So do people in tournaments use LHTR rules? and nobody complains about Russia?

      Cuz seriously, the first time I played Germany I took Moscow on my second turn. So I know how powerful Germany can be and I know that Russia cannot defend against the Germany onslaught by itself. So I was going to use Lend-Lease to give Russia TONS of infantry and have them activate severe winter to seal the deal.

      But I think Russia needs a little more love. They are weak as hell in LHTR.

      Ummm, if you took Moscow on your second turn, your opponent SUCKS!  You need better opponents, not better rules.

      @Ender:

      I really should convert the bloody thing to Javascript, but I don’t have time now. But I can probably bundle a folder with PHP, a web server and then a batch file to start the server and load the page. Could even do it with the new WebRunner app. But that will make for like a 20MB download just to run a 50K PHP script!

      Yeah, but then I don’t have to worry about the lag accessing your site over the WWW! :-P

      @Ender:

      Sorry to hear of the trouble. It’s working for me too.

      If people want, I could bundle a “local server” version that you could run on your home computer, which is speedier than the site. It would be on a limited distribution basis, with the understanding that it was not to be passed on to others without my say-so.

      Sign me up. :-)

      Bean, I’m thinking it’s a firewall issue – that is, your server is blocking that site for some reason.  It’s working for the rest of us.

      @ncscswitch:

      Very true U-505.

      Though the Baltic Fleet move to SZ3 would be contingent on the results of combat in SZ4 though in my opinion.  If Germany gets hosed on dice in SZ4, then the fleet stays in the Baltic.

      Makes sense to me.  Also, U-505’s strategy is probably more effective if Germany purchased the Graf Zeppelin on G1.  There’s nothing like staring at 2 subs, a transport, a destroyer, carrier and two fighters in sz3 with no transport fodder to cover UK’s BB and planes!! :-o

    • RE: Preview 3

      To me, the single round of combat is the most interesting innovation of the new games – I’m thinking of D-Day in particular, since I’ve never played BOTB.  I think that rule, together with the space limits, has cured the infamous “stacking” problem in traditional A&A.  While I very much enjoy A&A Revised, stacking limits tactical options.  Without stacking, more tactical possibilities open up.  Maneuver becomes not only possible, but an essential tactical skill.  If I’m not mistaken, BOTB even introduced a hex-based map.  A&A is becoming more of a tactical, rather than strictly a strategic, game.  It’s a refreshing change, IMO.

      @ncscswitch:

      Having the UK attack the German Fleet in SZ3 allows the UK to use both their fleet AND their air force, increasing the punch of their attack by nearly double.

      Attacking the UK fleet in SZ4 does increase their defensive punch compared to making them go on the offensive, but also allows Germany to deal with only the Naval units instead of both the Royal Navy and the RAF at the same time as would occur in SZ3.

      Nice analysis, Switch.  I personally think that the best use of the Baltic fleet in the case that Britain goes to sz4 is to use one of your subs to block that fleet from loading troops from UK the following turn.  Why get your whole Baltic fleet killed?  It’s useful for protecting your back door until you build up your infantry screen.  Bottom line, don’t waste your fleet for no good reason.
