    • RE: “Published strategies”

      I played Don Rae online (MSN Gaming Zone) back before he went “cuckoo” (allegedly) and I can tell you he was a VERY good player.  So he not only backed up his strategies with numbers – the guy knew what he was doing.

      @Nix:

      For the record, the SA IC strategy went 0-2 in the 2vs2 Tournament Semifinals.  The Axis won both games.

      Not entirelly true.

      I did put one in in “my” game in 2vs2 tourney.  It did fall, but we won the game,  I built it to Lure Japan into africa and ease the pressure on Russia.

      Al thought i hoped it would last 1 more round then it did :(

      I stand corrected, Nix, you did win the game, but definitely NOT because of the South African IC.  At least, not in the way you intended . . .

      @U-505:

      Yes, they did. As a matter of fact, the one I participated in failed rather spectacularly. However, I’m almost positive that it can be viable if implemented properly and only under certain circumstances which is reason for the thread. And it’s actually refreshing to rehash old dead strategies with a new twist.

      U-505, you’ve definitely given me food for thought.  I don’t go KJF that often, but if I were to, it would definitely be nice to be able to contest Africa with Britain alone without having to strand the British navy in sz12.  It’s still tricky, though, and you’re right - Uk must play the first turn very defensively.  And actually killing the Med. fleet would also help IMMENSELY with a KJF – any KJF, for that matter.

      @Lucifer:

      I can hardly remember that I have seen SA IC in revised. But surely sometime must have tried it.
      I have no reason to believe that this is a good strat.
      I know for sure that I would be surprised as axis if at the end of UK1, suddenly an IC popped up in SA   :-P
      I would not know how do handle it, or even if SA IC is something to handle, does this threaten me  :? :?

      Who has tried this, and how did it work out?

    • Jacksonville, Florida Players

      There was an old thread seeking players in Jacksonville.  It’s so old that, when I tried to reply, I got one of those nasty messages telling me to start a new thread! :lol:  (I don’t recall ever getting one of those before :-().

      Anyway, I am starting this thread to see if we have any new visitors who are living in the northeast Florida area.  (Yes, those of you who are geographically challenged – Jacksonville is in the northeast corner of the State of Florida).  We have two regulars on these forums (Mateooo and myself) who live here and it would be great to find a third and a fourth for some FTF action.

      <----------- Oh, and don’t pay any attention to that. :-D

      @Cmdr:

      I feel your pain Switch, but I’m still gunna nag you for being a hypocrite. :P

      Anyway, yea, bad dice trump good tactics any day!

      As for 4 fighters with Russia, not until you own E. Europe and/or Balkans and no Japanese pressure and only if you want to clear the med with Russia.  That happens like what, once every 50th game?

      Very true, but it’s really cool when Russia has that fourth fighter!  Russia with an airforce is SCAARRRRRY! :-o

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      @Bean:

      Btw I highly not recommend getting a 4th fighter, Ender. 3 is just right. Any more than three and you’re losing out on significant land troops, any less and you’re throwing art or arm to take territories.

      I agree 100%.

      @Ender:

      So just for heck I decided to try the Ukraine attack in my game against ncscswitch. I survived with 1 Inf 1 Art 3 Arm, and between WRus and Caucasus there are 11 Inf staring at any German force that retakes Ukraine. I also got a little silly and bought 1 Ftr 1 Arm 3 Inf on Russia 1 - I’m experimenting with the idea that Russia can really use extra air power. I might even buy a 4th ftr omgzorz!

      Let us know how that purchase works out for you (or, gee, I guess I could just read along the thread myself).  I’ve seen that purchase A LOT lately in different combinations of openings, and while I was initially skeptical, I think it can work with the right opening.  (And be disasterous with the wrong opening.)

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      @U-505:

      The biggest problem I have with attacking Ukraine is that it leaves the WR attack woefully short of offensive power. If you want to reliably take Ukraine with enough force to not only take it but also have enough units remaining to cause the German player a headache( taking with 1 arm doesn’t annoy me as Germany), then you will have to bring 3 arm, 2 fig. If you only bring 3 arm, 1 fig or 2 arm, 2 fig to give WR more muscle, then the chances of taking Ukraine at all drop a good amount. By attacking Ukraine/WR you are usually taking more causalties in WR that you would if you attacked Belo/WR, as well. I just prefer the more reliable opening of Belo/WR despite giving Germany more freedom in their opening, because Russia can afford for Belo to get ugly and WR never does because of the amount of overkill brought to that battle. In Ukr/WR, Russia can’t afford for either battle to get ugly.

      This is why I always roll the West Russia battle FIRST – to see how aggressive I can be in the Ukraine battle.  Depending on how W.Russia goes, I might not push my luck in Ukraine.  But you are correct – W.Russia is the weakest link of this strategy, NOT Ukraine, as everyone else seems to think.

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      I think the W.Russia only opening has merits – I haven’t ruled it out.  But, personally, I prefer a smaller Luftwaffe.  And the odds are actually that you’ll take Ukraine with three armor, not one.  So Germany has to commit some infantry (and at least 1 fighter or 1 armor) to retaking Ukraine.  I/O/W, it ain’t no gimme.  It sucks to lose 3 armor, but Germany has to watch its back door too.  It probably means Russia isn’t taking any other chancy battles in the first few rounds, but an even trade is hardly the disaster for Russia that you make it sound.

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      @Cmdr:

      But if you go BB, Trn to SZ 13 (bringing the Submarine) you don’t need any fighters there.

      So you still have 2 Infantry, Artillery, Armor, Fighter, Bomber vs Infantry, Armor, Fighter in Egypt.  And you have 4 un-designated fighters and a bomber to use somewhere else.

      Fine – you’re STILL down a fighter.  Even if you buy one, you only have 6 instead of 7 and, like Bean said, 3 less infantry.  Opportunity cost, m’dear . . .

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      The fighter you build on G1 unfortunately cannot help you kill the BB in sz13 or the DD in sz15 or help you take Egypt.  Yes, you SHOULD take Egypt with your bid pieces, but you have a 16% chance of NOT taking it without the fighter (assuming a bid placement of 1 inf., 1 rtl. Libya) vs. only an 8% chance of not taking Egypt WITH the fighter.  And if Germany fails to take Egypt, it’s lights out for the Med. fleet.  It may not happen, but I don’t see any down side in forcing the issue for Germany.  You buy 3 armor on R1 and 1 or 2 here and there in later rounds, and you’re fine.

      And for those enamored with the Belo. attack, I would point out it has a 25% chance of failing, in which case you’ve traded 3 infantry for 3 infantry and achieved no net gain in IPC OR position.  That, AND Germany still has that fighter . . .

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      Bean’s points are well taken.  I would add that, on R1, I’m not too particularly concerned about slowing the Japanese advance – it’ll take a few turns to get going anyway, by which time I will have purchased armor to more than replace the 3 I lost in Ukraine.  Japan also has other priorities – like taking the islands or reinforcing Egypt – which will detract from their advance to Moscow.  Optimally, by the time Japan is a factor in East Asia, British help will have already arrived.

      Getting back to Ukraine, it’s either kill those suckers now while you can (and yes, I’ll take the even trade) or hand Germany a stick with which she will repeatedly hit the Allies over the head – namely, that fighter.  Whether it’s Allied shipping or trading territories with Russia, that extra fighter is VERY useful to Germany.

      And Jenn, it’s 3 tanks – who cares?  It’s R1 for jeeper’s sake.  You got plenty of time to replace them . . .

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      @Cmdr:

      Losing the fighter in Ukraine isn’t too much of an issue for me.  I plan for it to be dead, and I drool over the chance to kill off 75% of Russia’s starting armor!

      After all, my bid is normally in Libya, so if I just add a bomber and a fighter and ignore the DD in SZ 15, then I’ll still win probably anyway.  Meanwhile, if Russia’s down to 1 tank in Ukraine (a good possibility) I can kill it with my battleship (another good possibility.)

      If you attack Ukraine with that BB, then you better pray your bid in Egypt is enough to take it, 'cause if you DON’T take Egypt, your little Med. fleet is dead on UK1, sweetheart! :wink:

    • RE: What's the consensus on a standard bid?

      I have to agree with Axis_Roll (did I say that?).  You guys worry WAY too much about losing those Russian tanks.  If I’ve killed 3 German infantry (9 IPCs), 1 artillery (4 IPCs), 1 armor (5 IPCs), and 1 fighter (10 IPCs), then my WORST CASE SCENARIO is an even trade in units (28 IPCs for 28 IPCs) PLUS an IPC gain of 3 from taking the territory.  That does not take into account the units killed by my tanks when Germany re-takes the territory (IF Germany retakes the territory).  And if the battle goes badly, I can retreat, which, by the way, I don’t think I’ve EVER had to do on these boards (but which would be acceptable if I had to).

      Plus, putting Germany down that fighter has significant tactical implications for Germany on G1 especially and thereafter.  AES (or sz15) becomes a riskier battle without the extra fighter, and the Luftwaffe is not as big a threat to Allied shipping without the sixth fighter.  IMO Ender and his like-minded folk are overly concentrated on saving infantry instead of tactical position.  I think his game with CC against Mateo and me is a case in point – he’s preserved his troops all right, but his tactical position sucks.  I think even Ender would concede that.

      In short, attacking Ukraine is about TACTICS, not economy.  And as Axis_Roll said, economy isn’t all – tactics DO matter.  And taking Belo does very little tactically for the Allies as compared with taking Ukraine.  Exchanging 3 infantry for 3 infantry simply is inconsequential in the scheme of things.  I’m not saying this opening CAN’T work – I’m just saying it’s less than optimal IMO.

    • RE: Cyan

      I think what U-505 is trying to say is that you can win with better strategy even if a few dice rolls go against you.  I once lost EVERYTHING I sent into sz52 as Japan (got zero hits – talk about bad dice), but still won the game.  How?  It was not by making risky attacks, I can tell you hat.  Remember when I posted the comment in your tournament game about playing an aggressive Russia?  What I was saying was you were playing WAY too aggressive.  Russia should NEVER buy all tanks and planes - never, never, never.  Most rules have exceptions, but not this one.  Russia plays a two front war, and the Russian player can’t ever forget that.  Slow down and play for the long term, not just for next turn.

      Okay, here are some gems I found:

      Q: Did you hear about the new French tanks?
      A: They have 5 gears…4 in reverse, and one forward gear just in case they’re attacked from behind!

      Q: Why don’t they have fireworks at Euro Disney?
      A: Because every time they shoot them off, the French try to surrender.

      Q: What do the French call a direct hit on Paris by a nuclear device?
      A: More proof that inspections are working.

      Q: How many Frenchmen would it take to defend Paris?
      A: It’s not known, it’s never been tried.

      Q: What does “Maginot” mean in English?
      A: Welcome!

      Q: Why do we need France on our side against Saddam and Osama?
      A: So the French can show them how to surrender.

      Q: What is the first thing you are taught when joining the French army?
      A: To say “I surrender” in German.

      Q: What do you call 100,000 Frenchmen with their hands up?
      A: The Army.

      Q: Why is good to be French?
      A: You can surrender at the beginning of the war, and US will win it for you.
