      SS, you write very well and obviously have a great command of the game.  I’m no expert, having played my last game probably 3-4 years ago, but it just seemed like there were severe limitations on the Allies’ strategy in A&AP.  For example, if Japan goes KIF, then the U.S. MUST buy bombers on US 1, and so on.  The thing I liked about A&A Classic and even more so about A&A Revised is that there is no one single way you “must” play to win.  Each player can adopt a strategy that suits him or her best.  I just get the feeling if I play A&AP against an experienced player, I would be at a severe disadvantage because it would only take one wrong move on my part and the game would be over by Turn 2.  Am I overstating that?

      Cleaning up the soft-porn ads on your website wouldn’t hurt either.  Very tacky.

      Jen, I wouldn’t exactly call Britain’s NAs useless, especially if you combine Enigma with the Colonial Garrison in India the way you did in our game.  England having an extra round of builds in India AND the Egypt fighter AND the Egypt armor in freaking India was a HUGE pain up my a** as Japan.  Again, not exactly useless.

      I agree with DM.  Note that it says “original controller of the territory” NOT “original owner of the AA or Industrial complex.”

      It does seem to be getting SOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOOOOW loading posts.  It seems worse in the evenings when, presumably, traffic is the heaviest.  What does our fearless host, Mr. Jennsen, have to say on the subject?  :?

    • RE: Fortress America and Conquest of the Empire

      In A&A online, each player typically bids so many IPCs to the Axis for the privilege of getting to play the Axis side.  Whoever bids less IPCs wins the bid.  So, for example, I bid 7 IPCs and you bid 8 IPCs, I win and get to play the Axis.  I immediately get to buy up to 7 IPCs worth of units and deploy them or bank all seven IPCs or buy some and bank some, etc.

      I think a similar system could work for Fortress America.  I think it’s safe to say America is the hardest player to play (meaning most challenging tactically speaking) and is probably the hardest to win with.  If for no other reason than the invaders have 3 minds working everything out while America is on her own.

      As for a system, I just thought of a way to make it easier so we don’t have to assign some arbitrary values to the pieces.  We could bid a number which represents the number of partisan cards and/or lasers that the US player gets to draw and deploy before the game begins.  So, for example, let’s say I bid “5”.  I could draw 3 partisan cards and deploy the units referenced AND deploy 2 lasers immediately.  Come to think of it, that bid may be on the high end!  :lol: (or maybe not?).  But it would make for a very simple bidding system.

      Thoughts?

      I forgot to mention, the link to the PBEM rules also has a dice server.  Pretty necessary, given the varying die involved (d6, d8 AND d10).

      Okay, here’s the link to the PBEM web-page.  It has PBEM rules and a chart where you can roll to see what Partisan Card you draw (it’s explained in the rules):

      http://members.aol.com/evilhedpro/fa/fapbem.htm

      The link to the map is here, though I haven’t yet figured out how it works:

      http://www.taulbee.us/webfa/

      This is a link to the OOB Rules (a rough copy):

      http://www.hasbro.com/common/instruct/Fortress_America.pdf

      Here is a link to the Fortress America Players Association (who knew?):

      http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/fapagroup/

      They appear to be the source of the map.

      And, finally, here’s a really cool high-res picture of the game:

      http://www.visi.com/~spookshow/famerica.html

      If anyone can figure out how the map works, let me know.  I suggest contacting the FAPA folks since they apparently originated the map.  Unless someone has a better idea, I think it would be cool to bid to play America.  We could assign values to the pieces to determine who wins the bid.  Say 6 for a Hovertank, 8 for a Helicopter, 15 for a bomber, etc.

    • RE: Fighter buy

      Actually, I WISH I had the flying Stukas.  I stupidly selected those IPC-sucking subs that do nothing but suck IPCs out of Germany!  :lol:  4 subs purchased x $8 a sub = a whole mess of land units I could use right about now.  :-P  Those subs did shave a fair amount of income from Britain and the U.S., but when you’re buying only 8 infantry a turn as Germany, it’s like your moving in slow motion or something.  Freaking Russia was going crazy in Europe because I had too little fodder to be aggressive (until recently, that is).

      I think I’ll start a thread on NAs, come to think of it.

      I have enough games going on right now.  But at some point, I wouldn’t mind playing a game of FA by forum.  There is PMEM map and dice server available on the web.  If any of you guys are interested, I’ll find the map and dice server and post the link.

    • RE: Fighter buy

      @General_D.Fox:

      I’d have to agree with Jen there a bit as well.  If you buy just all fighters and inf, and use your fighters as “flying artillery,” as someone said, then sooner or later you’re going to run into a well placed AA gun or two that might make you think otherwise about sending in the screaming sirens of psychological torment.  That happened to me when playing Weekend Gamer one time.  We traded WEU for about 4 or 5 rounds before he finally just sent in an AA Gun after capturing WEU.  I wasn’t too keen on losing a part of my anchor for Germany’s defense.

      Yep, you gotta get AA guns in place to protect your stacks.  But even AA guns can’t always save you.  Jenn has found that out in our little NA game we have going on.  German air has annihilated two Russian stacks in a row DESPITE THE PRESENCE OF AN AA GUN!!!  But without the AA gun, it probably would have been even worse.

    • RE: You sunk my BattleBoat!

      @Jennifer:

      You know, I have found there is a time when you want to go BB.

      You want to sink the enemy fleet AND have enough punch left over to keep moving without being disabled yourself.

      Battleships will perform this for you.  They can take a licking and keep on ticking.  I call them teh Timex of the Naval world.  Besides, nothing’s quite as satisfying as having 3 Battleships for Japan (especially with Most Powerful Battleships NA in LHTR/AAR)

      Jenn, funny you should mention this.  I was thinking of doing exactly this in our current game.  The thing is, I have Super BBs AND Tokyo Express, so the dilemma continues – 1 (Super) BB vs. 2 DDs that can transport troops . . . hmmm.  Either way, I’m having a blast toying with that gigantic American fleet you have.  :lol:

      @newpaintbrush:

      /old man mode

      At the time, I was painting miniatures as a hobby.  I wanted the name “oldpaintbrush” on account of how I’m a crochety nut case (online), and because I had a lot of old paintbrushes.  Seemed right.  But the name was taken, so I figured - well, I always keep buying new paintbrushes, so I signed up as newpaintbrush

      /old man mode

      I’ve really got to get a more serious email address for business purposes.  Oh wellz.

      OLDPAINTBRUSH was taken?  That’s it?  I’m not sure which to be more surprised at – the fact oldpaintbrush was taken or . . . oh, never mind.

    • RE: Explain your avatar / screen name

      I like your’s Froodster – especially the cat.

      “Weekend Gamer” was the handle I came up with several years ago when I was active on Don Rae’s A&A bulletin board on ezboards.com.  I was working for a living then too and barely had time to play on the weekend, so the term “weekend warrior” was sticking in my mind.  But I would never presume to equate myself with people who do serve their country in the armed forces, and I didn’t want people to think I was in the reserves or anything, so it just came to me that I was a “gamer” and it just clicked.

      In retrospect, when I registered here, I kind of wish I’d picked something like “Yamamoto” or “Desert Fox” (although those are probably taken already) just to be colorful, but it was easier just to go with the old name.

      As for avatars – anyone know where I can find some good pics online?  Anything sci-fi (including Hitchhiker’s Guide!) or wwII related would be great.

      Thx for the welcome.

      I already tipped the mod to look the other way.

      :evil: :wink: :roll:

      BTW, hawt avvie, Jen.

      Umm, Jen has a big enough head as it is.  But the fellas around here act like they are starving animals or something . . . sad, sad.  :lol:

      At the risk of missing the obvious, may I ask what “Newpaintbrush” means?  I have been wondering about that one.

    • RE: India Fleet to the Med?

      The British Indian Ocean fleet is an example of the fine balancing of this game.  Take it to the Med. and you leave Japan unhindered and speed it’s arrival on the Asian continent.  Sacrific it to slow Japan down (and if successful, it DOES slow Japan down), and you have a difficult time getting “cannon fodder” within range of the German Med. Fleet in order to kill it.  I would rarely put the fleet in position to get killed with Axis air combined with the Axis Med. Fleet, but if you control the Suez, you control which fleet attacks the other.  It is well worth it to kill that Axis Med. Fleet if the opportunity presents itself.  It will save Russia a lot of grief not having that fleet landing troops in Ukraine and the Caucuses.  Try getting fleet into the Med from the other direction – there is no Suez canal to protect your fleet in that direction.

      The point is, no matter which way you go, you present the Axis with opportunities they would not have if you had chosen differently.  That cannot be helped – it’s the nature of the game.  The trick is to capitalize on the opportunities presented to you.
