    • RE: Samurai Swords AKA Shogun

      So let’s talk Shogun strategy a second.  Besides discussing the Ninja, that is.  Who typically invests in fortifications?  Do you find them useful to your strategy?

      Personally, every time I have bought forts, I have lost.  Virtually every time I did not buy forts, I won.  Through experience, I have found the key to survival is mobility of your armies.  If one of your armies is stuck on a fort, it is a sitting duck, IMHO.  I can almost always kill an enemy army sitting in a fort by attacking with two armies against that one army (assuming I have two decent sized armies).  This is especially true after my armies reach level “2” and can move two territories a turn.  That is an AMAZING level of mobility when you consider you can attack from an adjacent territory.  It is the equivalent of moving 3 spaces in the combat phase in Axis & Allies.

      That’s it for forts.  Any thoughts on purchasing strategy?  I will hold back my thoughts as I want to hear other perspectives before sharing my own.  :-)

      @Jermofoot:

      @AgentOrange:

      That is true; people don’t easily forgive an assassination attempt on their daimyo’s life.  However, I’ve seen that people will bid on the ninja, succeed, and just hold on to it “until the moment is right”.  Is that correct?  Can someone really keep the ninja for the whole game if they want?

      I thought bidding happens every round?  That is…if you get him on one turn, and don’t use him, you wasted your money.  But it’s been a while since I’ve played.

      Jerma, actually, that’s not correct.  If you don’t use the ninja to assassinate your opponent’s general, you get to use him to “peek” at one of your opponent’s purchases before you have to make your purchases – a little espionage, if you will.  That way, you know how much you have to pay to out-bid that opponent for either the sword choice OR the ninja.  If you are in the lead, it makes good sense to out-bid everyone else for the ninja because, chances are, you will have more of your generals (probably all) still alive, making you the most likely target of a ninja attack.  So you buy it up to make sure your opponents don’t.  Then, you use him for espionage.  I only use the ninja myself if I am trailing and trying to knock off the leader.

      I’ve played this game several times with my nephews when they’ve visited in the last year.  It’s still just as much fun as it was 20 years ago in college!

    • RE: Was it worth adding ART to the game?

      I like having the flexibility to buy artillery, one, when I am defending a capital as Jen mentions, and two, when I can’t afford armor.  Artillery’s biggest downside is it’s lack of mobility.  There is no substitute for buying armor for going offensive, and that primarily means Germany and Japan (for attacking Russia) and the United States (to clear out Africa quickly and get forces to the front to help Russia).  Armor also comes in very handy in Russia when the Weirhmacht arrives because of its higher DEFENSIVE value.  A stack of 10-12+ tanks can really decimate an assault by Germany on the Kremlin.  It can buy Russia the time you need to finish off Germnay.

      Yep, if you don’t break alliances in this game, you can lose pretty quickly.  Conversely, if you don’t MAKE alliances, you can also lose because, while you are beating someone’s brains in, some other guy is building up and ends up kicking both your asses.  :lol:

      'Tis a great game, though.

      @Imperious:

      I wish they made a ‘conquest of Germany’ game with British, American and Soviet forces and a similiar game system.  Germans could have all sorts of special super weapons during the game.

      Hey, IL, what’s this “they” business?  Aren’t you the game-maker on these boards?  :wink:

      @froodster:

      It doesn’t have to take UK/US that long - me and CC are playing a team game right now where UK has taken WEU w/ 3 Inf 6 Arm in UK 5, and US will be landing 5 Arm 5 Inf and perhaps a few Ftrs to reinforce.

      So that’s what UK/US can do in 5 rounds.

      Gee, Frood, thanks for the free preview of the U.S.'s turn.  :-D  (Too bad I didn’t check this before turning in Japan’s fifth turn.  :|)

      And Switch, umm, why do you think the US went KJF when it saw all that Germany Navy?  :lol:  Maybe 'cause Germany was sucking wind for a few rounds?!

      That said, my kids are off to Catholic school next year, which means their clothes budget just shrunk and my beer and war game budget just grew a little.  :-D

      Catholic schools are private. Private schools cost money. So you are saying that you spent so much on clothes that the tuition for this school will be less than the annual clothes expenses?

      Well, damn, NCB, I guess you blew up THAT theory . . . man, I get screwed coming or going.  :roll:

      @saburo:

      My first online Axis & Allies Club was Days of Infamy which I joined June 1, 2004.  I wanted a name that fit well with the the war in the Pacific theme and chose Saburo Sakai, by many accounts the leading fighter pilot of the pacific war, with at least 64 kills.  I have since used the Saburo Sakai nickname or a variation of it in all of the Axis & Allies clubs I have joined.

      No avatar, both because I haven’t found anything that really fits and I’m too lazy to look.

      Wow, I totally forgot about the coal mine – man, was that cool!  :-)  I’m thinking they had the electric train layout too, but I’m not sure about the rest.  This was the late 1970s and I was oh, about 11-12 at the time.  The other cool thing about that trip was I got to ride an Amtrak train from Milwaukee to Chicago and got to see a Brewers game.  (I’m sure we would have gone to Wrigley, but my uncle happened to live in Milwaukee, so I’m sure those tickets were easier to score.)  Anywho, nice walk down memory lane there!  :-)

      Late 70’s? You saw a better baseball team play. My Cubs stunk up the late 70’s.

      As opposed to, say, the late 2000’s?  :lol:

      @rjclayton:

      I believe that when you retreat you must retreat all units from combat at the same time.  You cannot do a partial retreat.

      I think that is true in all cases except an amphib. attack.  The air units, but not the land units, can retreat from an amphib. assault.  Once the doughboys are on the beach, there’s no turning back!

      So now that you’ve admitted it M36, will you be changing the statement under your avatar to “My Katz”?

      Just to keep this partially on topic, the U-505 was a WWII sub that was captured and is currently on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I was born and raised in Chicago and my grandparents(all German) emmigrated to the US in between the world wars so my screenname is a loose connection between me, my heritage, my hometown, my preferred A&A country, and my favorite museum. My avatar is now THE U-505.

      I actually remember travelling to Chicago as a kid, visiting the Museum of Science & Industry and seeing the U-505 and walking inside it.  Pretty cool!  The other cool thing I remember (or, at least, it was memorable) was they had one inch cross-sections of a human (a female as I recall) between panes of plexiglass so you could see all the organs and stuff.  Pretty macabre actually now that I think about it.  But it was one kick-a** museum (in one kick-a** town, I might add).  :-)  The only thing I wouldn’t trade Chicago for is the weather!  I’ll keep my Florida sunshine, thank you very much!  :-D

      I agree. I’ve already paid my dues with the Chicago winters. The only thing wrong with Chicago is that it isn’t in Hawaii. Or Illinois isn’t in the south pacific.

      Did you see the huge electric train layout? Or the coal mine? The Shedd Aquarium, Art Institute, and Field Museum are world class but the Museum of Science and Industry has all of the coolest toys. And you can’t visit Chicago without seeing the U-505. It’s a landmark. Plus, now it’s got a new building all to itself to protect it from deterioration with some added interactive stuff to play with. I think I’m going to plan a summer vacation just to go up and see it.

      Well, considering it was probably ten years ago or more the last time I played, I am probably just as much of a noob as you!  We need to find a decent utility to play, though.  The Web FA was not my favorite, but there may be other options.  I am still checking into it.

      d-fish, I’ve checked out the Web FA utility on their site (I joined, got some instructions, etc.) and so far, it seems somewhat unwieldly.  Every time you move a piece, the screen freezes and it reloads the web page.  Not nearly as simple as ABattlemap.  I’ll keep playing with it off and on to see if I can get it working decently.

      @newpaintbrush:

      @Jennifer:

      There’s different types of school uniforms.  I’m partial to West Point style myself, but there’s the traditional “Catholic” style, the ankle skirt and business suit style, or just jeans and a school t-shirt style.

      Don’t let the appearnce throw you off, what’s the functionality say?

      For clothing, appearance is a major part of functionality.

      NPB, you obviously do not have kids of your own.  Your entire perspective on this question will change DRAMATICALLY when you have your own rug rats to drag out of bed, get dressed, find their shoes, locate their book bag and get their little butts out the door in time for school WHILE having to listen to them whine about how all the other kids in school have cooler clothes than they do . . .

      That said, my kids are off to Catholic school next year, which means their clothes budget just shrunk and my beer and war game budget just grew a little.  :-D

    • RE: One Helluva CEO

      @Janus1:

      I agree in principle, but my understanding (i.e. correct me if i am wrong) is that this was such an extreme situation, caused largely by extreme circumstances (9/11) and that the impact of simultaneous bankruptcy of our airline industry would be crippling to an already damaged economy in the fallout of 9/11.

      Um yeah, the airlines all fail, leaving us with circa-1940s transportation options, leading to the total collapse of our economy.  Yep, that would be bad.  HELLO, 9/11 WAS AN ACT OF WAR!  FOR WHAT DOES THE GOVERNMENT EXIST EXCEPT TO PROTECT US FROM OUR ENEMIES???  Geez, even a conservative like myself can understand that.  The regular rules of laizzez-faire capitalism DO NOT APPLY in times of war.  Witness rationing during WWII, price controls, etc.
