Wow, it must have been down for everyone. I just checked and NOBODY is online – not even the regulars.
SHOUT OUT: IS ANYBODY HERE? (hears crickets)

It was hosed last night and again this morning, at least for me. Just curious if this was scheduled maintenance or some sort of virus program or whatever.
The other weird thing with Triple A is that once or twice a game, someone will roll a big battle and take the territory WITHOUT LOSS and against large odds, but then the dice roll emails don’t go out. I’ve had that happen 3 or 4 times now. Anyone else notice that?
Good story. I just tried to applaud you and got that stupid session error message again. CALLING MR. JENSEN! PLEASE FIX THE SESSION ERROR BUG!
@ncscswitch:
None.
You can;t even get above 50% for 3 battles if you go for all 3.
I’ve seen it succeed against me 3 times though. So you cannot always go with odds. (Success to my mind means Russia clears the territory without losing any Fighters.)
That’s a full third of Germany’s fighters gone before Germany can move. Not a strong position to start from.
Though, it IS a risk. Cannot say it isn’t. But with 50/50 odds, exactly how much of a risk is it?
Jenn, how about responding to my bid?! (for the tourney) I PM’d you the bid # from Frood.
Apparently someone snuck through and game me some good karma.
It’s good to be, well, applauded!
@ncscswitch:
Honestly, if you are going to put 5 IPC in Ukraine, a better use of that money would be a tank. Punch = 3 vs AA Gun against 2 fighters having a punch of 2. The tank is also an offensive weapon.
I have to agree 100% with Jen on this. INF, 1 ARM is a FAR superior bid for Ukraine than 1 INF, 1 AA.
And to add to her analysis above…
1. The AA Fires only once, so you roll the 2 ones only in round 1, then they are silent
2. The ARM will likely fire TWICE before it is killed, possibly more.
3. There will NOT be an AA gun to deter Germany using their FIGs and BOM for the counter-attack.
Hey you, the one posting as Switch – who are you and what have you done to the REAL Switch? I know for a FACT that the REAL Switch NEVER agrees with Jenn on anything!
Hmm… when I try to applaud Gamer, I get a session error…
Disregard my question. I see the “applaud” button now, but I am getting a “session verification failed” message. Not sure what’s up with that.
Well, Mr. Frood, you are one of the more enlightened souls around this place (which is like saying you are the smartest member of the Bush adminsitration, but I digress . . .). Anyway, your whitty ripostes in PD and elsewhere made them more worth reading. Now, we have you, but no PD!!! I am sure you will find some other outlet for that whit.
As for a game, sure, why not? In fact, if you and CC are game, maybe I can drag my doubles partner, Mateo, into a “fun” match while we are waiting to start our tournament match. Let me know if you are game and if so, I’ll check with Mateo.
Finally, can someone explain the karma thing to me?
Because for that game, it seemed that 1:subs still were screwing with me 2: I had made many attempts to invade, but failed miserably every time
The key is sustainability – you have to set up a “chain” of transports that can get troops into Europe EVERY TURN. It takes a while to build that chain, but once you do, it’s the kiss of death for the Krauts.
As for subs, DDs and bombers are key. And Germany shouldn’t be buying that many subs after about turn 3 or she will run short on land units (at least, if you are taking advantage of the rule that allows you to move British and American stuff the Russia and have it converted to Russian pieces. That’s a BIG headache for Germany to overcome).
Jeez, the mods have no sense of humor anymore. A guy tries to post a lighter post (where else was I supposed to post it?) and it gets deleted. Can we at least bring back the GD forum and delete any political threads that get posted in it?
This is definitely a modified map – notice the word “Advanced” above Axis & Allies Europe in North Africa? One example – there is no Tobruk space on the original map.
Why not just build up your transport fleet and shuck troops over to Europe? Once you’ve cleared the Atlantic, you won’t have to worry about replacing your transports, and land units are a LOT less expensive to replace than bombers. Just build up your fleets (including 1-2 carriers to protect the tranports from German air) and keep funneling troops in. Eventually, you will wear Germany down economically. Germany’s economy, over the long haul, cannot keep up with the Allies’ economy.
Personally, I would like to see an Industrial Center in Egypt, as otherwise there is no way for the UK to reinforce Egypt other than by conquering all of North Africa, or by sending a big convoy through the Med. I am not a fan of sending big convoys through the Med. I can see the no new ICs from a game balance standpoint, but Egypt is a major problem.
Anyone have any alternate strategies of reinforcing Egypt?
This is not a big issue in AAE for two reasons: (1) Russia can reinforce the Middle East from its territory, and (2) Germany needs to concentrate its forces in Europe. Germany cannot really afford to devote too much attention to holding Egypt, because it will cost Germany dearly elsewhere. Germany has to worry about preparing for the D-Day invasion while simultaneously bulking up to take Russia. Holding the Middle East is a low priority compared to these objectives.
For game balance reasons - it’s a different game. If you’re Germany, you don’t really need any new ICs. If you’re the Allies, allowing an IC in Europe would make it too easy for the Allies to win. It’s already hard enough to win as Germany as it is.
What? A map program in Switch’s future?
I wouldn’t get carried away, Frimmel. Switch has been known to play two games at once and STILL use his board to manage both – go figure.
The loss of Africa is often the bitter pill the Allies must swallow if the KJF is to be done in earnest. If this results in a German economy near 50, then the Allies could be in trouble.
Personally, I don’t like the FIC attack because your odds are less than 50% that you will clear it with surviving pieces. If it works, great, but it could just as easily open the path to Asia for Japan, as U-505 notes.
The latest ban came about due to a racial slur by one who shall remain nameless. That was a clear violation of the rules and I reported it as such.
As for being a free-for-all, the PD forum has been pretty much that already – the level of discourse has been so low I don’t even bother to respond to most of the stupidity I read. I certainly would not blame David or the mods if they wanted to ditch PD forever. The problem is, I think people around here (you know who you are) will find a way to inject their political views in some other forum. So you might as well have an outlet for it.
I think the rules as they are read just fine. They just need to be enforced (and observed by the mods themselves). If folks don’t honor a ban, then perhaps more drastic measures should be taken.
I would also urge everyone to make a concerted effort to raise the level of discourse. Frankly, the PD forums have been in the gutter for quite a while. If all anyone can say is “damn __________” [<–------- fill in the blank, usually with the word “liberals”], then what the heck is the point in engaging in a discussion? Anyone call other people names, but what does that prove? (Other than extreme immaturity)
And after all, this place is first and foremost a gaming site. If people can’t keep their politics into perspective, they potentially ruin the site for everyone else.
Yeah, Switch knows all about getting punked by that Med. fleet in Caucuses, don’t ya Switch? :-D
You always gotta be careful any time you are shifting stuff away from Caucuses early on. Sure, the 7 IPC swing Switch is talking about is no big deal, but if you leave two fighters in Caucuses with too little protection, then it’s more like a 27 IPC swing when I kill those fighters! Not to mention, Russia is pretty much toast without those fighters to support its attacks (not to mention for defense). I love it when an opponent leaves Caucuses vulnerable. I’ve won more than a few games that way.
