      @colringbk:

      What is the name for the North African set going to be? Is the Desert Fox, Rommel, going to be in this one? Or is he somewhere else. I guess he’s all I know about the North African campaign, except it was primarily English and German units, right?

      Umm, there was this American general known as Patton involved – maybe you’ve heard of him?  :wink:

      @Ender:

      @Cmdr:

      Yea, I definately need that smiley when dealing with your defeatism.

      It’s simple.  You collect +4 IPC with that move.  If you lose the tank, you net -1.

      Strategically, you collect +4 IPC with the move, you may lose the tank -5 and you might kill an attacking infantry +3

      4-5+3=2 IPC gain

      Jennifer, you have to COMPARE THAT MOVE to THE OTHER MOVE to see THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MOVES. We are COMPARING TWO DIFFERENT MOVES. Sorry for the shouting.

      Simply blitzing Karelia also happens to net +2 IPCs, so even by your math it’s a wash between the two moves.

      However, your math is flawed because you can’t count a full 3 IPCs for the chance of killing an Inf. That chance is worth 1.5 IPCs. The tank is dead meat fo shizzle though, so that is a full 5 IPC loss (plus more because it is a front-line unit.)

      And you can’t count +4 for the move because +2 of that can be achieved without incurring the cost of the tank.

      Let’s try it in terms of dollars and cents. I make you two different offers:

      1. I will give you $2 million. You don’t have to pay anything, I just give it to you.
      2. I will give you $4 million up front, but you have to give me $5 million back right away, and I’ll give you a 50% chance of me giving you a further $3 million.

      #1 is easy - you get $2 million
      #2 - half the time, you will walk away with a net gain of $2 million. The other 50% of the time, you will lose $1 million net.

      What’s the better deal? (I won’t explain to you which deal is analogous to which attack until after you give your answer  :wink: )

      Puts on his best Howie Mandel impression

      “So, Cmdr. Jenninfer, DEAL or NO DEAL?”

      People who give you Karma (especially smites), but don’t post the fact or why.

      I have to agree with that one (see my own thread about “Why am I being smited?”).  My smites are way up, for reasons that are not at all clear.

      As far as the elephants, etc…
      It is pretty certain that the Atlantic was crossed before the time of Columbus.  We know for certain that the Vikings reached Newfoundland.  And we know that there were a LOT of seafaring peoples in both the Atlantic and Pacific going back more than 3000 years.

      Apropos of this, I am reading a book entitled “1423:  The Year China Discovered America.”  It’s about a Chinese super fleet that set sail circa 1421 and, according to the author, circumnavigated the globe nearly 70 years before Columbus sailed.  I haven’t finished it yet, but the guy is a retired submariner, so he knows a thing or two about navigation, and he bases his conclusions on maps dating from that time period, among other things.  It’s a fascinating read so far.  I actually put it down to read “The Nine” by Jeffrey Toobin, a very good book about the Supreme Court in recent years.  Yes, I’m a book nut.  So if I’m a little slow with my turns, odds are I have my nose stuck in a book . . .

    • RE: Current Japanese Pushing Strategeries?

      @trihero:

      I think it’s less than that, because Sinkiang is hard to hold if you’ve been sending off so many units early on. The Russian 6 inf with 4 tanks in Moscow can easily sit on Sinkiang until it takes you a few turns for the complex builds to reinforce that area.

      But I still like the idea of expanding out, it’s just that it does decrease your ability to storm novo/sinkiang/kazakh, which are also worth some IPCs.

      It’s all according to your strategy.  If your strategy is storm the gates of Moscow ASAP, then you dump in Asia early and often.  If you like to take your time and squeeze Russia to death, then you pick up every available stray IPC while slowly building up your Japanese land forces.  I think either can be a viable strategy – the key is matching your Japan strategy to your German strategy.  But that’s another topic, I think.  :wink:

    • RE: How to use America effectively in KGF?

      @trihero:

      Funny thing is, by the time the US Battleship makes it on station, the entire British fleet can be unified in home waters.

      I guess that means that it takes too long to rely on it for protection for your forward fleet =P

      If by “forward” you mean the British fleet, then yeah.  I would say that’s fairly obvious.  I thought you were referring to the American fleet, in which case, the BB will be there in plenty of time to help when it really matters.  The first few turns, you need to work with the British, but after that, the American fleet can range on its own.  Not a big deal, really.

      @trihero:

      Yea good point, just sometimes it’s annoying to maneuver the BB because it’s usually lagging behind your “forward” fleet.

      If your BB is lagging behind the rest of your fleet, then you are not deploying your BB correctly, IMO.  A BB without transports is quite possibly the most useless piece on the board.

    • RE: Future Expansions?

      I agree, Frimmel, I’m not a big fan of the randomly packed sets.  Why does a “D-Day” set have Japanese units, for example?  For that matter, why have Japanese units at all?  It’s not as though there was that much variety in the Pacific, unit-wise.  Just wave upon wave of grunt soldiers yelling “Banzai” and being shredded by the Marines (yes, I’ve been watching “The War” this week, which is another topic, I suppose).  And it was mostly a Naval war in the Pacific anyway – no tank battles anywhere (at least, none that I’m aware of).  The Eastern Front, though – that’s another story altogether.  I just wish I had more Russian units and – here’s the catch – someone to play them with!

    • RE: Future Expansions?

      It is disappointing that WOTC are more concerned, in this instance, with generating new sales by rolling out new product lines (like the WAS line) before perfecting what’s already in production.  Didn’t they make their name by slowly perfecting Magic over the years?  Now, it’s a hugely successful game which will make them money for years to come.  It seems the forethought into A&A Minis was not as great.

      With all that said, the minis themselves are beautifully done and the game mechanics are very manageable.  I just wish they would publish more “theme” groups of minis, like a Stalingrad set with plenty of Russian units (which seem to be hard to come by in the randomly packed sets) and maybe a Desert War set, with extra Italian units.  Instead, they went down this re-sizing and re-costing path, which just means they made everyone waste a bunch of money on what they apparently believe is an unfinished product.  Ah well, it’s a good problem to have in the scheme of things, I suppose.

    • RE: Large AAM lot for sale (and trade) - Modified 8/24

      Mot,

      Will you sell individual pieces?  The following are on my “buy” list:

      1 Tiger I
      1 Nashorn
      1 SS Panzergrenadier
      2 Panzerfaust
      1 BMW R75
      1 Panzerchreck
      1 SS Stormtroopers
      1 Grizzled Veteran
      1 Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer
      2 Communist partisans
      2 sGrW 34 81 mm Mortar
      2 Soviet Grenadiers

      By my calculation, that comes to $8.30.

      I am also interested in:

      BA-10M
      T-35

      But I can’t find any stats on these units.  Can you post the cards for these units?

      Thanks,
      G

      Bob, two questions.  1. What condition are these in (do they all have their cards, original bags, etc.)?  2.  What are you asking for price-wise?  If you want to PM me with pricing, that’s fine.

      Thanks,

    • RE: WW2 Aircraft Production vs Starting IPC Allotment

      It seems to me that timerover’s question is NOT how to make A&AR more realistic.  Let’s face it, A&AR is so UNREALISTIC, it’s hard to know where to begin.  Conquering territory boosts industrial production?  Since when?  Apart from cannibalizing factory parts and confiscating equipment, and perhaps “oil” territories, taking territory has NOTHING to do with industrial output.  I sincerely doubt that America’s loss of the Phillipines on the one hand, or it’s conquering of Okinawa on the other, had any measurable impact on how many tanks or planes Detroit cranked out during the war.  It’s also absurd from a realism standpoint that a bomber based in the Eastern United States can bomb transports in the Japan sea zone (sz60) if Buryatia is in Allied hands.  And it’s absurd that Japan can invade Western Canada from the Alaska sea zone.  The list goes on and on.  So realism was never really what A&A was about – it was more about re-creating the “flavor” of the war in a way that would be accessible to the casual gamer.  Those who want “realism” have had Third Reich to play for quite some time. The rest of us who have lives prefer A&AR.

      If you want a game that re-creates lend lease and stays more true to history, then A&A Europe is closer to what you are looking for.  It has lend lease and America’s economy is far larger relatively speaking than it is in Revised.  It also has convoy zones to allow the Germans to re-create the sinking of Allied shipping.  It’s a more challenging game tactically than Revised, but it is closer (but not quite equal) to history.

    • RE: WW2 Aircraft Production vs Starting IPC Allotment

      @Romulus:

      Timerover51, I apologize if my post may have offended you, I am not native english and so my english grammar is not correct sometime or I may appear more harsh than I would.

      However also I do not feel good with what you said.
      First, there is a thing that I do not understand: according to you how should happen a discussion about game balance and production?

      With all the participants that say “yes timerover51, you are right”!?!?!?
      Summarizing with all that agree with you?!?!?!?!

      I think that a forum is for free expressing opinion and free discussing, but with respect for the other participants. Having differents idea and confronting them with ideas from other people.

      Second thing that I would to clarify: I am deeply offended of being qualified as:

      Have fun glorying in Axis wins, and remember to also enjoy roasting Jews, using China as a biological testing lab, having shot down aviators for lunch, and those non-existent Korean comfort girls.  Oh yes, I forgot testing your samurai swords on prisoners necks, and having live targets for target practice.

      I never do such things. And I never justify who did, or do, or would do such things.

      And all this why? Because I believe that A&A should be an equilibrated games?
      For being politically correct I should play always as Allies and beat the Axis all the times avoiding that the Axis player may do barbarity? In the game?

      It is how someone would accuse the chess game of racism and intolerance, because there are white pieces against black pieces!

      Finally, I am Italian and my country has been on the Axis side in WWII.
      But I am happy that Allied has won the war, beating Italy!
      I am grateful to the USA and UK for all the efforts and all the youngs that has dead to liberate my country. People younger than me, had given their lives miles far from their country, for what? For bringing peace and freedom to me and my compatriots!

      If now Italy is a free and democratic country, with all the problems that we have still to solve, I may only say “Thanks” to USA, to UK and all other allied nation.

      Romulus, as an American and grandson to those who defended freedom in 1941-1945, I can only say I greatly appreciate your sentiments.  And, as “ugly” as we sometimes are, we Americans greatly appreciate the sacrifices made by others in advancing freedom, not to mention the culture and civilization bequethed to all of us by the Greeks and the Romans, your ancesters.  Who knows where we would all be without the civilizing influences of those great peoples.

      @Imperious:

      I will be contracted to do whatever i am told. If i have any say then the map will be 100% accurate based on all my old 1939 published map files and atlas. I can only say that it will be a supreme creative effort and it will not be another rinky dink map that i have seen them make before.

      You mean the same “rinky dink” map that Revised basically rips off, at least as to Europe?  Yes, Xeno’s W@W definitely has issues, not the least of which is it’s EXTREMELY hard to win as the Axis against any competent Allied player.  Not that that’s unrealistic, it just hurts playability because you get sick of the same side winning (almost) every game.  But W@W has some pretty cool futures, and it is based on, and only slightly more complex than, A&A Revised Second Edition.  Some features I like include the country-specific units, such as Panzers for Germany, Russian Guards for Russia and Marines for the U.S. that have their own attack and defense values.  W@W also introduced the paratrooper unit, AND the Cruiser unit, which again Revised rips off with the Destroyer unit, which basically serves the same purpose.  W@W may not be a truly “polished” game – the special rules applicable to capturing certain capitals are damn confusing and vague, and in the case of the Russian capital just plain unfair IMO – but for the money, you get a lot.  A few house rules is all you need to clean up the glitches.  W@W is about a eight to ten hour playout with players who know what they are doing.  If you get much more “realistic” than that, you can measure the length of the game with a sundial!  :lol:

      I have also purchased, but never played, Europe at War.  Some very interesting rules, but VERY complicated.  For example, air units are divided into “tactical air” and air cap, which makes for some interesting rules interpretations issues and probably a very long playout.  But I will give Frank Zenau (his real name) credit – he’s one creative guy (if a little grammatically challenged).
