Good game.  Your end stage slow grind of my ipcs was top notch.

Good game!  Thanks for the game and let me know when you want to start the flip game.  I do think the 25 bid changed the early game quite a bit.

I’ll wait a few days, finish up one of my other games for sure.

Well, it was just now my turn to f’ it up! I did not even retake Moscow back, LOL!

Let alone Bryansk, and obviously I screwed up in the first place in not realizing the tank blitz to Moscow. I could have easily defended everything.

Was about to start stacking fleets on money islands. I think I finally had enough stuff to defend my transports.

I surrender this game. I think I could have recovered and still had a chance in this game if I did the obvious and recover Moscow back…plus get work my stack from Bessarabia back.

Yep. Fortifying the money islands - well we’re only talking about Celebes aren’t we? UK can take Sumatra and ANZAC can take Java. Or do you mean two transports to the same island? I don’t think that strategy is much good with a J1 DOW though. Japan will just crush your force for no real losses and you’ll have taken troops off India.

From South Africa you can also hit Ethiopia which you might not do without that transport. Or take Persia and do something else with the SZ98 Transport. The two inf who start on South Africa normally only arrive after Egypt has been secured so I think that is worth something. You can also land the troops on West India if you think fortifying India is the most important thing.

      Sure.  I’ll set it up.

I need practice as the Allies.

Then I’m mostly gone Friday-Monday.  I’m meeting the future in-laws when they fly into town.

Good luck with that!  I mostly figure weekends are for family and outdoors time anyway.

I wonder if it is worth taking Norway as USA early on, with USSR assistance in taking Finland. A few things remain unclear:

Does this make USA ineffective against Japan Should USA follow up with a Normandy landing? Or something else?

A few things seem to work though. You can hold Moscow G6, doubtless in part because air can reach Moscow via Finland. Also killing the Scandinavian troops reduces the assault. If Germany kills the USN with the Luftwaffe, it loses too many planes to support the Moscow assault. If it doesn’t kill the USN, it needs to defend Leningrad against an amphibious assault which ties up a bunch of troops.

      @Caesar:

      @KGrimB:

I know its probably not optimal, but I pretty much always build 6 inf and 1 fighter on London UK1. I always send some aircraft to the Mediterranean and with 60-70 ipcs on G2, Germany can attempt Sea Lion even if they may not have been originally considering it unless you have the defenses.

I would also agree against the factory in Egypt. It can be a little precarious early with nearby German air and I think that normally games where you have an option to build a factory in Egypt are games where the Mediterranean is already in the Allies’s favor. It doesn’t exactly create opportunities the same way a factory in Persia does. Just use transports with South Africa.

Sea Lion on G2 is foolish because ideally, Germany would need to buff its navy, build infantry, and transports so that shouldn’t be done until at least G3.

You misunderstand me. Sea Lion G3 is the most realistic because it is after you buy transports on G2, after SBR, and after T1 convoys. Germany evaluates early sea lion based on what London does turn 1.

With respect to the original question, I think a g1 Dow on Russia to bait UK into not defending for sea lion could work. However, you’re probably short 1-2 transports from strafing Yugoslavia, not hitting other parts of France, missing Russian wheat NO, and committing German aircraft to the eastern front or other riskier battles. Thus you exaggerate your existing problems because you give up all of the pros of G1 and take away units from that front just to get them stuck on an island with 1 VC instead of attacking a country with 3 VC.

It’s too much for one country. You would need to make sacrifices with Italy’s dreams in the Med. You can’t give them the help they need and they would have to spend on forces to delay Russia. They could attack London with their Bomber.

I think what would sell this plan and give Germany a better chance of baiting the UK would be a Japanese attack on Russia. If you bring America into the war you probably have no chance of winning in Europe. If you keep them out you get a better chance at London and Japan can draw some attention from Russia. Otherwise the Siberian infantry are probably garunteed arriving in Moscow and probably other Russian forces would occupy Iraq.

you have 3 territories that do not implicate the mongolian rule, so if the russians depart, you can always take those with extra transports without ever comitting to a major invasion

if the russians stay, or add a fighter, they can tie up some minor forces and, at a critical time, lure japan into a diversionary attack that keeps them up north.

eiher way, the money is down south, not up there.  Still, you can take it all, provided you dont dilute the japanese fleet or money push

I tried out Sea Lion in a game, again, with a few changes.  I did do a J1 because its just sooo good for Japan.

*before Sea Lion invasion, the U.S. positioned itself for Gibraltor route, rather than Canada.  So Germany used its cruiser in SZ104 and bombed Gibraltor’s naval base I2 so the U.S. could not counter attack.  Alternatively, if the U.K. hadn’t had planes in place to reinforce, I might’ve let U.S. retake London, so UK could collect on UK3, and Germany could just take London again on G4 and pocket 30ipc instead of 8.
*on G3, Germany bought a carrier for SZ110 so transports wouldn’t be sunk.  Bombers couldn’t hit because I’d taken Scotland on G2
*on G3 I bought 3 inf for Normandy so that they could end up in London on G4 with the 3 inf I could buy and prevent the U.S. from taking it.
*used all the inf from Norway/Finland for Sea Lion, except one as a blocker in Finland.  This left quite a lot of German troops in the way on mainland Europe, 25+.  I parked them in Romania along with Italy’s 2inf, 2arton G3 once Russia committed its stack to the southern route.  He never did attack there.

*also on G3/G4, I bought slow movers.  I had 10 transports available to take back Norway, Finland, and also hit Baltic States and Novgorod all at once.  This was a serious hit to Russia who lost 10ish inf/art spread out over these areas.

With Japan whooping in the Pacific, the U.S. had an impossible choice and made the mistake of splitting his focus.  He never did liberate London.

Italy committed its land forces to Eastern Europe.  I used its planes to hit anything I could of the UK’s in the Med or Egypt.  By the end of turn 5, UK had 2 inf and an anti air gun, 2 transports left, total.

Russia was a PIA for quite a while, but by round 6 the front line was finally at Ukraine in the south and Germany solidly had Leningrad, and could start bombing Moscow and buying nothing but fast movers.

IPC’s were nice.  After G4, Germany was making 52 ipc base plus 15 ipc NO bonuses (London, Scandinavia, and Novgorod).  This plus the 30 ipcs from sacking London easily paid for the units to take and keep London.

It’s not easy, you’ll probably lose most of China to the FEC, and you’ll have to start from scratch in South East Asia. You’re also giving the Americans free rein in the Pacific. It’s easier to take advantage of ANZAC’s low income to keep a small fleet in sz63, maybe conquer NZ and Solomons/NB, and keep them bottled up, while attacking Calcutta and US fleet.

I agree with a post that Mashmallow posted earlier, there is no guarantee that you are going to get that NO for a clear med, you should not even rely on that one. The Italians have so many uses, on the ground, with actual IPC earning territory’s that those planes can be used for, you need to weigh out their impact in the med versus potentially taking Egypt, steam rolling Greece, building an actually strong can-opener force in Russia, and even Protecting Rome.

The last few games that I have played, when I am the Axis, I get my Italian partner to seriously evaluate the Taranto raid force. If it is the max force possible, and the UK is totally on point, I say scrap the scramble, focus on more attainable objectives. As a German player, I sure as hell don’t want to burn the Luftwaffe on an air vs naval clean up battle G2, where I can lose guaranteed safe hits against Russian ground troops once Barbarossa commences. On the other hand, If the UK doesn’t bring the max force down, or they don’t make a move to middle east with SA and India navies / units, and Italy looks like they might have some time to maneuver for a few rounds, then scramble all the way. I have seen games were Italy won the Taranto raid, and from then on became unstoppable in the Med, which in turn leads to Germany being able to achieve their full potential, and results in an Axis victory.

Italy unfortunately has to play the game, or at least start the game, being completely on board to support the Germans in whichever direction they plan to strike. A strong Afrika campaign with Italian air power can lead to Italy generating sufficient IPCs to gain a bit more control over their destiny. A successful Italian campaign in the middle East, or as a can-opener can have the same impact. Italy with zero navy, and zero air force, means they might as well stockpile Rome and prepare to defend Europe, there will be no expeditionary force.
