    • Quick question about NOs and Bonus income

      Hi all

I’m about to start my second AAG40 game - the first one in two years - and have been reviewing the rulebook.
I have two quick questions regarding UK and Germany NOs

      Germany

5 IPCs per territory if Germany controls Novgorod (Leningrad), Volgograd (Stalongrad) and/or Russia (Moscow).

It may sound silly but I want to make sure that I have understood it correctly.
Does it mean that from the time Germany gets i.e. Novgorod, it get 5 IPCs as bonus income ?
Or will Germany receive 15 IPCs all at once in each turn iwhen conquers and holds all three areas ?

      United Kingdom

5 IPCs if the United Kingdom controls all of its original territories in its European economy

If Germany conquers Iceland or Chipre for instance, does the UK lose this bonus income ?

      Greetings

    • RE: Can Tanks move 2 areas in Non Combat Movement phase ?

      @Rorschach:

Tanks can move up to a maximum 2 spaces in any given turn but if they have moved in combat, they cannot move in non-combat afterwards.

Yes, you are right. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did not mean that they could move in both phases.
My only concern was that if they moved in the NC phase, then they could only move 1 area.

Thanks for the clarification. The fact that they can move 2 hexes in NC phase do no highlight the Blitz ability, IMHO. After all, a Blitz is simply an ordinary 2 area movement in Combat Movement Phase (with the restriction that first area must be hostile). I don’t see any special ability here.

    • Can Tanks move 2 areas in Non Combat Movement phase ?

The title says it all and it is really a silly question I dare to ask.  :-D

By reading the unit charts (Move: 2) I have always assumed that tanks can move 2 areas both in Combat Movement Phase & Non Combat Phase.

Now, re-reading the Blitz special ability, it occurs to me that I might have been wrong all this time and the 2 area moves is only for Blitzing in Combat Move Phase.

Moving 1 area in NC Phase would make a big difference like the speed of binging reinforcements to the front and would really highlight the Blitz ability.

Can any seasoned player clarify it ?

Happy New Year and Gaming to all

    • Fighter defense aboard CVs

      The manual says:

Fighter Defense: Whenever a carrier is attacked, its fighters (even those belonging to friendly powers) are considered to be defending in the air and can be chosen as casualties rather than the carrier. (However, a fighter cannot be chosen as a casualty from a submarine hit, because submarines can attack only sea units.)

A friend of mine argues that defending in the air means to be taken as casualties only. My counterargument is that whenever a unit defends, it uses its defense factor (4 in case of fighters). Which is correct ?

    • RE: Attacking Submarine Surprise Strike - useful ?

Ok, thanks ! That makes sense
I have also found the clarification in the AAE40, later on.
But the initial writting is a bit misleading, because one tends to keep units behind the casualty strip to return fire.

    • Attacking Submarine Surprise Strike - useful ?

      Hi folks,

      Just a silly question

I don’t see the practical difference in AAE40 and AAP40 for an attacking submarine between conducting a Surpise Strike or participanting in the General Combat .
I mean, in both cases, if it scores a hit, then the affected ship can still return fire, because it still placed in the casualty strip.
Even the attack value is the same in both cases. There is no advantage in rolling the die first, you’ve got the same chances. So what’s its usefulness ?

However, the defending submarine performing a Surprise Strike can make a difference by eliminating an attacker’s unit before the general combat takes place.

      Am I missing something ?

      Thanks !

    • Tactical Bombers & Air superiority

This is a good ability for air vs naval combats and it makes sense to me,
but I find it quite odd in a “fighters only versus fighters+tac-bombers” combat.

Has anybody already stated a house rule just for this case ?

    • Mech Infantry, supported by Artillerym in attack ?

      Hi,
I don’t see this ability in AAP40 (it is listed in AAE40).
Is it done on purpose for this game ?

    • RE: Practical use of AAs in AAP40 ?

      @calvinhobbesliker:

Tanks don’t necessarily defend better; if there are tens of planes, AA is better. If the attacker has a stack of inf and 6 planes, AA is better since a tank will probably not kill 3 inf during the battle

      ok, got the point.

If we use probabilities, a tank has 50% of eliminating a unit (not neccesaringly a plane), 0% for two. while an AA has at least 16% of eliminating a single plane, probabilities increasing as the number of planes grow (sorry, I just can’t do the math  :-D ) and fires first.

Although this 16% seems still pretty low, it is perhaps more interesting for me to know that expererienced players find them useful anyway.

      Thanks, once more  :-D

    • RE: Practical use of AAs in AAP40 ?

      @molinar13:

I find that AA guns are worth buying than previous versions. before it was rare if anyone bought an AA gun, seeing as how (in my games) they just sat there with their IC counterparts. In AAP40 AA guns can save China! As the british player I always move an AA gun to Yunnan.

yes, good idea. This could be an argument for reusing AA deployed at startup.
But I’m not so convinced to purchase new AAs. You can also buy a tank for 6 IPCs, which defends better and it is more versatile.

Thanks for the replies, anyway !

    • Practical use of AAs in AAP40 ?

      Hi

      I’m comimg from AA50, new to AAP40.

So now that minor & major ICs, naval & air bases have their built-in AAs, what is the practical use for AA pieces ?
It seems to me like inheritance from past games …

Don’t know if this topic has been discussed before, but with 36+ pages of topics in AAP40, it is quite difficult to find out

    • On board planes in a damaged CV

      Hi AAG fans

What happens to the on-board planes in a damaged CV ? Do they go with the ship to the repair box ? Or are they assigned to a nearby base ? I have found an answer when the CV is sunk (in the official FAQ): planes are reassigned to a nearby base.

On one part, it seems logical that planes should be still onboard. On the other side, this case should get not worse treatment than the carrier sunk case and planes should be redeployed on the mapboard, I think.

      Thanks!

    • RE: Cruisers classes (USN & IJN)

Probably your AA Gualdalcanal cruiser silhouettes are swapped.
I wrote WOTC (WOTC Europe in my case) and they sent me the right cruisers,
      from AA50 parts I guess.

      Happy New Year !

    • RE: Airfield attacks

my interpretation of the rules is that BBs and CAs do not exert their influence into an adjacent island zone unless they are performing shore bombardment to ground units or airfields.

    • RE: New to Guadalcanal

Well this is a test for my understanding of the rules also  :-D

As far as I know. if fighters survived, they should be in the sea zone.
To attack land units, they should be in the contested island.
However, fighters already moved, so you can’t do it.

This is in contrast to battleships and cruisers which can support a land attack (shore bombardment) from an adjacent sea zone. (Section Phase 2: Combat, subsection 4. Attack land units and or airfields)

      hope this helps …

    • RE: Larger map for AA50 ?

if this is what you are talking about
      http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/25840
then yes it was made from a version of IL’s (Imperious Leader) AARHE map

      Exactly, that was it !
He printed it as a single map and it was the size of the OOB AA50 map, approximately.

I’ve been downloading a couple of PDFs from jeffderstroyer’s link (thank you, thank you!).

      AA50 Final phase1 copy.pdf
      AA50 basic version copy.pdf (from 12/01/2008)

At first glance, I can’t tell any difference from them, apart from the file size.

My first idea is to print it as a single map.
If that is very costly, I don’t know.
I can’t see many advantages of tiles over my OOB map.
Anyway, thank you very much for your offering !

    • RE: No ASW capabilities in destroyers

8a)ASW warfare. If destroyer present conduct ASW attacks (use Krieg’s chart although maybe all planes are 1.)

Thanks for your suggestion, frimmel, but I feel more comfortable not introducing extra steps in combat. I find player aids invaluable to remember these things.

Like you, I was wondering why heavy bombers seem so powerful in ASW as destroyers in Krieghund’s house rule.

Thanks.  Since you like that variant, you may like this one as well:

      http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/326505

This rule - as well as the hidden movement rule in the official rules - is fine as long as you find an opponent  :-)

But I wonder if all this hidden movement mechanics becomes a little bit messy with all that bookkeeping, at least to my taste.

If I ever have an opportunity to play with hidden movement, I’ll include this rule as well and draw conclusions.

      Thanks again

    • Larger map for AA50 ?

      Hi group !

Yesterday, I played my first A&A game.
It was AAR since my opponent didn’t have AA50 yet.

He brought a beautiful, large laminated map, with regions translated to Spanish.
I found particularly convenient the printed setup of units.
But I suspect that this map has been designed in this forum (IL?)

Is there any similar file available for AA50,
with the same zones and territories as the OOB map ?

I’m not interested in historical or customized editions yet.
I don’t know many players around here.
We all are beginners and it is safer to stay on the official game.

      Best regards
      Rafael
