      @Veqryn:

is it just me or does the shape of the map, the shape of the countries, borders, etc. not look right? i can’t tell you what is wrong, but it just doesn’t look right, like the shape of the continents or something.

      are you complaining ?

      hahaha
i am not disappointed, i am just curious

    • RE: IPC record sheet for AA42 for -Over the board- (OTB) Tournament play

      i have no idea too.
i can make full color copies of documents, many pages long, with notes and pictures and text in them, and I rarely ever go over 10mb.

have you tried making it in a different program then importing to to pdf format after?
or making it in a different program, then saving it as something small like a .jpg or at worse a .bmp, Then converting to .pdf?
how exactly are you drawing these things, what program do you use?

whats with the complaints about AA1942?  Its just supposed to be an update of Revised, with the updated rules from AA50 plus cruisers.

IL, you set a record for biggest 1 page pdf files.

i am not sure you are capable of making one that is less than 80mb,
      looks nice though

    • RE: Preferred option to stall Japanese expansion.

Buying anything for the Pacific not as good as buying thing for the Atlantic:

a single submarine bought for the pacific = 2 more infantry in France or Italy
a single carrier bought for the pacific = 1 tank + 3 more infantry in France or Italy
a single fighter bought for the pacific = 1 artillery + 2 more infantry in France or Italy

And what exactly do those submarines, carriers and fighters in the Pacific get for you?
You have to buy Transports and Troops for the Pacific TOO if you are going to threaten islands.
You will never take Japan’s island, and Asian mainland is far too many turns away to set up a shuck/transport chain.
Any money you spend on Transports and Troops IN the Pacific is money NOT spent on Submarines and Carriers and Fighters.
If you go all out and buy just navy, you have a small chance of actually destroying the Japanese Navy…. .but what then?  What do you do with that?  Japan still has her mainland factories pumping out guys on the way to Moscow.  You can’t and will never stop them.
If you buy some transports with the rest going to navy, you can take a couple islands here and there, cutting Japan’s income from 60 to maybe 40 after they lose an NO or two… but… they still have their navy sitting in Formosa or Japan, and their factories pumping out guys on their way to moscow.  You took some income from them, good job, but did you actually delay them more than a single turn with all that navy?  Nope.

    • RE: How does AA 42 change Allies/Axis strategy?

With Germany, I will be attacking the USA atl fleet first turn with a submarine.  I will be positioning my air force to ensure that the allies can not land in Europe or Africa the first turn (easy to do this time, since i will only need 1bomber and 3fighters in range to wipe out any first turn joint allied fleet that decides to move to africa).
With USA and UK, I will be buying shit tons of Fleet Defense, which will delay my landings by 1 full turn.  Russia is going to be in a tight squeeze because of this.

Russia and Japan will be played pretty much the same, except that russia can count on any support through africa being 1 turn late.

    • Difference between Revised and 1942

So let me get this straight then:

      First:
Because there are now Destroyers AND Cruisers, the setup is pretty much the same as before except:

Japan SZ 50 is now a Cruiser

Germany SZ 5 is now a Destroyer (nerf)

UK SZ 35 is now a Cruiser
UK SZ 15 is now a Destroyer

USA SZ 20 is now a Destroyer (nerf)
USA SZ 10 is now a Cruiser (also a nerf, it may have same a/d as before, but now it doesn’t have anti-sub capabilities, so, Germany has 50% chance of destroying your cruiser and both transports turn 1)

      Second:
UK SZ 13 is now a Cruiser instead of Battleship (big nerf)
Russia SZ 4 is still a Submarine (minor nerf)

      Third:
AA50 Rules for Naval Combat and AA50 Navy Prices
Transports taken last as casualties, no defensive rolls.
      (big nerf for allies)

      Forth:
No more Tech / is Optional
      (less randomness, yay!)

      Conclusion:
I am disappointed that larry did not move the Germany Submarine from sz8 to sz7.  Whereas before, there was no point in the German submarine attacking SZ10 because the american destroyer negated it’s first strike, defended on 3, and had two transports defending at 1 that could be taken as casualties (meaning that the most he could hope for was a 40% chance of killing 1 transport before dying), now the German navy has a 50% chance of killing a Cruiser and two Transports AND living to tell the tale (and a 50% chance of doing nothing).  This to me is an unacceptable increase in the luck of the game, providing either a huge swing for Germany, or a small / negligible setback.  [my math is correct: 2/6 chance of killing with first strike, followed by a 3/6 * 4/6 chance of dying to the cruiser, followed by a 2/6 * 2/6 chance of killing the cruiser and transports, followed by a etc. etc. = sum of (1/3)^n with n from 1 to infinity = 50%]
So, huge Nerf for the UK and USA.  They lose the protection of ‘killer fleet transports,’ have a 50% chance of losing the American Atlantic Navy, and also have a huge nerf in the Med with the loss of a Battleship and the downgrading of the 3/3 to a 2/2.  This means the germans get to have big fun in the Med and Africa, and also that they will lose 1 less german fighter on their first turn.  They will lose their Baltic Destroyer and Transport much easier, but their subs will survive to do some damage against the Allies.  With proper positioning of their airforce first turn, the Allies will not be able to land in Europe or Africa on their first turn.  Germany is now able to kill the Allied Navy and Transports much much easier, because Russia’s submarine and the allied transports can not shoot back or be taken as casualties against the German airforce.

      Verdict:
      Germany +
      UK –
      USA –

      edit:
I should add that I think the nerfing is just fine.  I tried to make it sound matter of fact style but it may have come off as complaining.  Yes, Germany benefits from the changes, and the UK and USA are hurt a bunch by them, BUT I think that is just fine, perfectly ok, and probably makes this game more balanced than revised, yay!  (the only thing I can complain about is the submarine in sz8, when it should be in sz7)

    • RE: Open letter to Larry Harris: Feedback on your excellent creation

I normally do a 6 ipc bid for the allies (playing with NOs, 41)
this normally pans out as 1inf in Egypt, 1inf in Karelia

this is rather similar to what Larry has kind of suggested:
1inf in Egypt, 2inf in Yunnan

I would say they are of equal value.

    • RE: Open letter to Larry Harris: Feedback on your excellent creation

I agree that when playing with NOs, you should:
      1 more infantry at Egypt
1-2 more infantry in Yunnan (1941) and 0-1 more inf in yunnan (1942)

However, I disagree with reducing the price of Cruisers without reducing the price of Carriers.  If cruisers go to 11, then carriers should go to 13.  And I would never accept cruisers going to 10, ever.

I like the idea of Battleships having to return to their port to repair.  I have always argued with my friends that battleships should not repair at the end of combat, they should repair at the beginning of their owner’s turn (this would allow a BB damaged by the UK to be sunk by Russia/USA, etc, instead of just repairing so quickly).

I would also argue that China should be able to get the benefits of attacking during their turn, OR they place units equal to half their territories rounded UP (instead of down).

To me, a factory in the East Indies is rather dumb when compared with a factory in India and Burma, which are much closer to the action and do not need transports to function.

      @Cmdr:

      @Veqryn:

battlemap and tripleA are completely different jen,

      battlemap is just a map
easy to use, no bug, comes pre-setup for the game you want to play.

tripleA is a full setup game + lobby
has a lobby to find people, has rules hard-coded, dice get rolled for you

      they are completely different
(and I don’t like battlemap because there is no lobby to find players)

Yes, Battlemap is a way for players to play each other.  TripleA is a prettier version of Battlemap with less functionality but comes equipped with an AI (which sometimes prevents you from performing legal moves)

where exactly is the lobby? there is none

    • RE: TripleA still up and running! Many players online.

I decided to check out GTO to see if it is any good.  Basically, the website only has 1 version of A&A, which happens to be Revised.  Also, you are allowed to play it against a computer player for free, but if you want to play against a Human player, you will have to shell out $9.00 (US) (and that is a one time thing, not every time you want to, just the first time).  There are also no options available.  Lastly, as far as the actual game went, I have no clue because it would not load despite my 4 attempts.
All in all, TripleA kicks its a**.  Not only is it free, but I can play all the different versions A&A, and play user created maps or even make my own.  The rules are hardcoded, and there are plenty of options when setting up the game.  There is an in game editor for when you want to create your own situations, or undo something, etc.  There is also a calculator to give you your chances of success in a particular battle.  There are more people in an online lobby to connect to who want to play A&A (whereas GTO has a variety of games, so when I logged on there was not a single game of A&A going, nor apparently anyone interested in it).

Lastly, I have not received a reply to my email yet, but I read the one above (thx romulus).  This has given me an idea.  What would it cost us to buy the rights to A&A online from hasbro too?  If it is cheap, or if it could be sold as a percentage of advertising revenue (like, 100%, i don’t care) generated from an ingame side panel with some non-annoying advertisement, then maybe we could just buy the damn rights instead of going underground.
I’ll send them an email next week asking who I would have to talk to.

edit: also, I have decided to start playing webdiplomacy.net (the game Diplomacy), and would encourage people to try it out.  There is no luck involved at all.

    • RE: Germany must ALWAYS build IC to win game in Anniversary?

Germany starts at 31 ipcs on turn 1, peaks at around 55 on turn 3, and then slowly goes back down to 31 by turn 6 again.
      buying 10 tanks = 50 ipcs.
For turns 3, maybe 4, maybe maybe 5, you will control Karelia, which gets you another 2 production slots, so…
      buying 12 tanks = 60 ipcs
      buying 4 inf, 1 art, 6 tanks, 1 fighter = 56 ipcs
If you have extra, maybe buy a fighter or roll for tech.  Rolling for tech is always nice, and fighters get beastly defensive rolls for later when you have to defend.

I consider buying an IC as Germany to be very sub-optimal play.  12 production slots is plenty, and you should not ever have any more than 55 ipcs.  If you do have more than 55, that means you are winning already, and buying an IC becomes a “win-more” option, and therefore irrelevant.

I suggest you slightly change my email message or write a new version.  Unless we can get a shit-ton of people to spam petition emails to hasbro (doubtful given the current complete lack of enthusiasm), personalized and empathetic emails will suit our case much better.

Thank you to anyone who sent emails.

    • RE: National Objectives Proposed Changes

I like the first one and the third one.  However the 2nd one would mean that Russia never ever gets that NO.

Below are some of the changes that my play group uses.  Sometimes we use none, some, or all of them.  The idea here is two-fold, we want to balance the game, and increase interactivity/fun.  The first three changes listed are to improve the interactivity of the Pacific theater, and the last 3 are to fix perceived balanced issues.

      1. Japan’s 2nd NO should be changed to require Japan control 5 instead of 4 of those territories (ie: require Japan to control five of Kwangtung, Borneo, East Indies, Philippines, New Guinea, Solomons)

      2. Japan’s 3rd NO should not include India (ie: require Japan to control either Hawaii or Australia)

      3. America’s 2nd NO should give 10 IPCs instead of 5, and should include Okinawa (ie: Gain 10 IPCs if the allies control either the Philippines or Okinawa)[we have found that we could increase these to 1000 ipcs and it wouldn’t do anything because America will never control either anyway, but at least it provides a little pie-in-the-sky for America to look forward to]

      4. Britain’s 1st NO should require 5 instead of 6/all of those territories (ie: require UK to control 5 of Western Canada, Eastern Canada, Gibraltar, Egypt, Australia, South Africa.

      5. Germany’s 1st NO should require that there be Zero Japanese forces in Germany’s Territory, similar to russia’s 1st NO (ie: if NO Japanese forces are present in a territory controlled by Germany and if Germany controls France, NWEurope, Poland, Czech, Bulgaria, Germany)

      6. Italy’s 2nd NO should require that there be Zero Japanese forces in Italian Territory, similar to russia’s 1st NO (ie: if NO Japanese forces are present in a territory controlled by Italy, and if Italy controls 2 of Gibraltar, Egypt, and Trans-Jordan)

it depends on what you are looking for.

AABattlemap is a great utility that provides a map and units etc, for Axis and Allies.  It does not however provide a place/lobby to find other online players.  For that part you will have to either use the forum to find players, then play by forum.  Or you can try out TripleA, which provides both, at http://triplea.sourceforge.net/mywiki and can be downloaded http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wzvnmlw1uej for the latest version, and for an earlier version http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?wn3mjmen3yk
