      @Cow:

      I do a 3 ipc bid in this game. seems ok.

      1 free INF for USSR seems like it would be a good thing. If you can take Ukraine and take and hold West Russia, you should at least have a fighting chance. It seems like you’re not far short in the basic setup from being able to do that.

      All right. Let’s shoot for next week. We can get an earlier start. It sounds like we’ll have 4 players then anyway.

      @Imperious:

      Ukraine attack is no good.

      You lose them for nothing when you could have taken Finland and probably protected those army’s from demise on g1. Finland attack kills the same number of Germans.

      Of course the German player can invade Finland devoting naval units, but the idea is to do anything to tempt the German player to not killing UK naval on G1.

      My knee-jerk reaction is that the Finland attack sucks, but I admit that I’m fallible and I could be mistaken. I’d love to hear exactly what the opening move you suggest is, and I’ll be happy to analyze it and/or try it a couple times to see how it plays out.

      The only real weakness with the move I see is it lets the German player basically ignore Karelia and head South, doing some combination of the following: attack West Russia, attack Caucasus, and/or stack Ukraine.

      ‘nerf’ generally means to make something weaker.

      ‘nerf’ also means to make a normally dangerous weapon or toy safe enough for kids to throw/shoot directly at peoples faces and/or nuts that it turns from horrible into hilarious (e.g. ‘nerf’ football, ‘nerf’ gun, ‘nerf’ baseball, etc.).

      @Petebu:

      What are the common buys for Japan in the first round? I was thinking about 1 Transport, 1 sub and the rest inf. My friend wants to merge the 2 American fleets right next to Japan after his turn. I believe that I can destory this with ease.

      It depends on your strategy.

      Here are some options–

      –3 AP & 3 INF
      –IC, AP & 2 ART
      –AP, INF, DD & BMR
      –2 AP, SS, 2 INF & ART
      –CV, AP & 3 INF

      @Mallery29:

      People just want to protect Egypt from Germany, and protect the Egypt FTR so it can hit the E. Indies fleet.  It’s a legit move, but I don’t think its necessary.  I would rather let Germany hit Egypt G1 and go light on other attacks for better chance of losing units.  The Russian FTR won’t stay greater than 1 turn in Egypt…I’m pretty sure it’s going to run like hell back to Russian territory on R2.  The FTR just greatly reduces a G1 attack on Egypt.  To each his own…

      I pretty much agree with every thing Mallery29 says here.

      I think it’s necessary to attack Ukraine R1, and I think losing the attack will put you in a GOOD position to LOSE the game. Right now I prefer sending every possible unit to Ukraine R1. Shorting that battle even by 1 ARM or FTR INCREASES your odds of LOSING from 3% to 12%, a FOUR TIMES increase. When you send everything to Ukraine, on average you win with 3 ARM left in Ukraine.

      Someone will argue that Germany will wipe them out G1. That is true, but you will kill 1-2 INF. And when Germany counterattacks Ukraine, they won’t be able to take West Russia also, unless you just had atrocious rolls on R1. It is critical for USSR to hold West Russia. That is why I think it’s so important to fully commit to Ukraine R1. And if I was making this move, then I’d buy 4-6 INF & 1-2 ARM on R1.

      I called Tabletop. The store closes at 8, but the game room normally stays open later. It typically closes at 11-12, but we will have no control over that. Apparently, certain regular players have keys to the room, and they decide when to lock it up.

      I could be up there around 5:00. It would take you guys about 45 minutes each to get there.

      What time is good for you guys?

      @Petebu:

      How many games have you played so far? My first game will be this Friday.

      I have played 1 game against myself and 1 more against my brother. Plus, I’ve had the board set up on my table for a while and analyzed early game scenarios.@Petebu:

      thought about buying 2 subs with Germany on the first round to avoid any build up from UK. What do you think of that?

      I see the ARM as the primary offensive backup to the wave in Ukraine and the INF & ART at least in part there to protect the VCs. I feel like the SS would be to protect the VCs from Allied naval. So, I think I’d buy 4 less INF if i was buying 1 or 2 SS. Maybe the buy should be 1 INF, 2 ART, 3-4 ARM & 1-2 SS. This way you’d end G1 with 2 INF & 2 ART in Germany to help secure the nearby VCs (Rome, Paris and Leningrad). Remember the G1 ARM can hit Karelia G2 and/or it can hit Caucasus or Russia G3.

      The power of ARM is in the 2 MOV. Compare price to FTR @ 10 IPC for the same ATK on land attacks, and you’ll see that @ 6 IPC ARM is a reasonable deal in the right situations. At 5 IPC ARM was underpriced, and it caused ‘too many’ degenerate all ARM buys.

      USSR needs to take Ukraine and West Russia R1.

      The FTR will be necessary for R1 and R2 fighting. If it is sent to Egypt it cannot fight R1, and it’s very unlikely that it would be able to fight productively R2. It cannot be spared for Egypt.

      At least that’s my take from my analysis, calculations, and experience so far.

      @CWO:

      He was a lucky guy to survive that, given how easily Shermans caught fire when they were hit.  There was a WWII joke – I can’t recall if it was a British or German one – saying that if you hit a British-manned Sherman with a hammer, the crew would scramble out before you had time to hit it again.

      He did mention that the tank was on fire when it got hit.

      @Gargantua:

      survived his tank getting blown up

      Did they jump out Gi-Joe/Cobra style?

      Actually, yes, he did. The other 3 guys in the tank weren’t so lucky. 1 was killed by the blast. A second was mortally wounded. And the tank commander jumped out first, and picked the wrong side of the tank to jump out on. Uncle Jim said he heard gunfire and never saw the commander again. He jumped the other direction and escaped by crawling into a nearby bramble thicket. He said he thought some Germans saw him crawl in, but they went on because he was way in there, stuck, out of sight, and unarmed. They had bigger problems than that. However, a couple days later when US forces pushed back the Germans in that area, theys cut him out, patched him up, and put him in a new tank.

      @Hobbes:

      The big issue is figuring out the US shuck since it is more similar to Global than anything else because of the UK not being into range of Eastern US and the distances have increased. And where exactly are the best landing spots.

      Isn’t the first place to look for US troops to shuck from Eastern Canada. They could ship out via SZ 10 –> SZ 8 (land in France or Northwestern Europe) or SZ 10 --> SZ 13 (land in Gibraltar or Morocco).

      @CWO:

      This is actually an accurate reflection of the problem the Germans faced: no matter how many Shermans they demolished, the Americans always had more in reserve.  It gives me a new appreciation for the impressive quantity of Shermans that were being cranked out by the Detroit Tank Arsenal during the second half of WWII.

      Yep! My great uncle, Jim, among many other courageous US tank crewmen in World War II, survived his tank getting blown up. They put him in another tank and sent him on into Germany.
