Good morning everyone, I’m looking for some helpful advice from a more experienced (or talented) A&A player regarding the following situation.

I’ve been playing A&A (both online and in-person) for 10 years. Usually when I’m the Axis and successfully take both Moscow and Calcutta, the game is over.

However, despite taking both of those objectives as the Axis in the following game, my gut instinct tells me I’m still going to lose somehow. I think I’m losing the IPC battle (certainly Japan is way down on USA) and no matter how large an airforce I build up as Germany and Japan, I can’t get into a position to realistically defeat either USA’s or Britain’s massive naval fleets.

I’ve thought about moving both airforces over to double-attack one fleet, but I’m worried about leaving either Axis country vulnerable to invasion once the airforce has left.

It’s Britain’s turn next and they will probably retake France and Belgium, as we’ve been ping-ponging those territories for a while now.

Any advice? Should I start spamming subs everywhere? Or would it better to ignore the large fleets and simply spam infantry all over the mainland?

I always build a factory in Manchuria on turn 1 when playing Japan.

In my opinion, using transports to transfer land units to the mainland turn after turn after turn is a complete pain in the backside, because the transports are highly vulnerable to air or sea attack. In order to keep both transports afloat I find I need to hold back at least two destroyers to escort them everywhere they go and if allied air power is nearby, then sometimes a cruiser too.

Directing warships to escort transports is something Japan cannot afford to do, if it is to have any chance of matching or restricting the US navy in the Pacific.

The way I see it, the 15 IPCs a new factory costs is a small price to pay to free up the entire Japanese Navy to focus on blocking the US Navy virtually from the start of the game and until US production eventually overwhelms it (by which time Russia is likely to have fallen anyway).

But other more experienced players may have worked out a better way to put pressure on eastern Russia and hold the western Pacific for as long as possible.

I agree that the AAA unit is overpriced and as a result I don’t think I’ve ever bought one.

That said, I’ve found the existing AAA units you begin the game with useful. If you’re desperately defending Moscow, having two AAA units to knock out one (or hopefully two) German aircraft before the main battle begins can be very helpful - particularly as aircraft are usually the last casualties taken and that aircraft might otherwise deliver 3, 4 or more ‘hits’ in a long battle.

For Germany there is little prospect of Berlin coming under conventional air attack (i.e. not strategic bombing), so I will often move my AAA units (in non-combat move phase) eastwards to protect any stack I’m building to try to conquer Russia. Russia only starts with two fighters and in my opinion, the presence of AAA in your German stack makes it largely untouchable (if the Russian player has any sense!).
