It looks promising. If it weren’t for the deluge of ripoffs last year trying to emulate the urban crime aspect of GTA, I’d be more enthused.
I’m curious what infantry types you’re favoring over others.
The new expansion for Oblivion is up - making the world 25% bigger. Now there’s even MORE places to get lost in
I like the North African expansion, I’m a little puzzled about the lack of an announcement on the War at Sea expansion, and I’m very nervous about the whole “Tanks with Commanders” deal. I thought heroes were a suspect addition to the game which would lead to some of the problems seen in other minis games. I got out of Mechwarrior because you couldn’t win without the super-special limited edition promo mechs, and I’m worried that these will turn into super-special units that break the game.
The notion of an Easy Eight as a trolley is highly amusing. Something Oddball would definitely do.
What intrigues me the most is the “randomized casualties system”.
I want more weird weapons. Sniper rifle, rocket launcher, how . . . quaint. I want remote mines and laser trip wires and grappling hooks. Honestly, an ASMD shock rifle would be a big bonus.
As disinterested in the PS3 as I am, I love the weapons set in Resistance: Fall of Man. It’s done by the same studio that came up with all the crazy stuff for the Ratchet and Clank series. One weapon throws up a temporary shield that only your gun can shoot through. Another gun fires a tag and you can then fire guided bullets that fly towards the tag.
You should hunt down a copy of Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Granted, it predates Morrowind by a full decade, but I used to have fun creating my own spells.
Given the large map size, I would definitely include either a few Sd Kfz 222’s or Pumas. The 222 is more cost-effective and the Strike/Fade 2 makes it great for making the advance troops stop in their tracks, but the main reason I prefer the 222 is because I rarely play more than 200 points, and with your army limits that’s not as big of a concern. I’d say give the Puma a tryout.
Recent games you have to play?
Earth Defense Force for the 360. D3 makes games that aren’t flashy, but they’re loads of fun. I also recommend Cooking Mama for the Wii.
Anyone see exactly what the Georgetown coach did to draw the Tech?
You can likely get an escort carrier. I pulled a Shoho out of my starter. It and the St. Lo are one squadron only, but it at least gives you a fighter CAP.
I saw a very similar list about two months ago. Speaking of Recycling, the list included the latest Grand Theft Autos, State of Emergency 2, the Soprano’s, the 360 version of Godfather, and Scarface. All of these were either sequels or license ripoffs of movies and TV shows.
I work in a video game store, and I’ve seen a lot of garbage over the last two years. Here’s some games that you should avoid because the hype is completely out of proportion to the quality of gameplay:
NBA Live 07 (Numerous, particularly XBOX 360 and PC): EA Sports has a bad problem with feature creep; taking a sports game, updating the roster, adding some little gimmick and charging you $50. The AI bugs on this version were inexcusable
Scarface (PS2, XBOX): The movie has generated a huge following from the 18-25 crowd, and the game is just an excuse to milk money out of those kids that have the poster up in their dorm room. This game doesn’t look any better than Vice City despite being produced five years later. The gameplay is repetitive and you wish you had a jump button.
25 to Life (PS2, XBOX): This piece of garbage was one of those urban crime games that followed in the wake of GTA:San Andraes. It’s barely playable.
Any game for the Wii or PS3 that was released for another system last year: See Blazing Angels, Godfather, College Hoops 2k7. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion for PS3 and Tiger Woods for Wii receive special exemptions.
Currently in my Board Game rotation:
Chez Geek
Lunch Money
Fluxx
Tsuro: The Game of the Path
Settlers of Catan
Ninja Burger
Axis & Allies: D-Day
Scattergories
Apples to Apples
RPG Short Shelf
D&D 3.5
Spycraft V.1
Star Wars D20
L5R 1st Edition
And I actually played a couple games of Doomtown CCG the other day.
I am very, very pleased with the minis, although my one Japanese sub is going to need re-shaping. It won’t sit flat on the table. Someone on the Avalon Hill forum referred to these bent ships as a Banana Republic fleet (har har).
There’s a very thin line between a highly restrictive dress code and a school uniform. Our local school district has been inching towards that line. The only problem with school dress codes are they don’t address as many problems as symptoms. If the fashion industry weren’t so badly screwed up, kids wouldn’t be trying to emulate styles like saggy pants and bare mid-riffs. Maybe I’m becoming an old fuddy-duddy like my parents.
…a giant tiki head that glows when it transmits communications, Awesome!
If you didn’t know about the ancients, that might make you think you’ve been using too many stims.
I just opened my case last night. I’m very impressed. A couple of minis are bent, but there’s ways to fix that. I apparently ordered a case of Axis Naval Miniatures, I’m one Italian BB away from an Axis set. Only two Allied minis, Hood and Salt Lake City.
