      I’m curious, why can’t Axis naval units move through the sea zone bordering Gibraltar?

    • RE: French units in Indochina?

      @johnnymarr:

      Per LH 8-12-09

      The French territories will be French but there will not be any French units located on the AAP map. They will appear in the Europe game however. As for the Global game… I’m not sure there is a large enough French presence to warrant French units in FIC.

      I’m not sure what he means by that. France maintained a prescense there, not a huge one, but enough, I would think, to warrant at least an infantry.

      And sure a naval base might help Japan, but I think that would play out to be a double-edged knife: it becomes more of a tempting target to the Japanese, but since it’s Global game, an attack on French Indochina means risking the ire of the UK and ANZAC.

      Unless, of course, Larry already has a rule that says even in Global a Japanese attack on French Indochina won’t provoke Britain and ANZAC. Though I think it would seem better if it was non-provocative only after Paris falls…

      I think a naval base will just help Japan. Larry said that he doubted whether their historical presence coulnts for 1 inf in there. I seriously doubt there’ll be a navy

      Do you think you could show me where he said that?  :?

      Should there be French units in Indochina in Global 1940? Maybe two infantry and a naval base, along with a destroyer and transport?

      @UN:

      @calvinhobbesliker:

      The three battles you listed were won by the French, the British and Indians, and the Poles.

      Well, I wouldn’t say the Free French won Bir Hakeim, but they delayed the Afrika Korps for 16 days, enough for the British 8th Army to regroup and stop them at El Alamein.

      As for the Polish winning Monte Cassino…well, again, they took part in it, and they stormed and took the cathedral itself and took heavy losses, but there was also the Brits, Americans, French mountain troops, Commonwealth, and so on.

      Well the Poles were the ones that broke through the line; the others failed

      Not really. Actually, the battle wasn’t a single battle: it was four. No one broke through the first three times and on the fourth the French Moroccan troops broke through at the mountains around the same time the Polish stormed the cathedral. If anything the French won the entire battle for the Allies for compromising the entire line.

    • Most underrated battles/commanders

      You always hear about Montgomery or Rommel or Patton’s feats, and the names Stalingrad, Midway, D-Day, El Alamein frequently spring up.

      What about Mountbatten, Leclerc, de Lattre, Stilwell? The Battles of Bir Hakeim, Imphal, Monte Cassino?

      Who do you think are the most unsung heroes of WWII, or the most underrated battles of the war?

    • Need clarification for India/UK IPCs

      I’m wondering if someone could clarify this to me.

      I’ve heard that India and Great Britain will have separate IPC incomes. If that’s true, does that mean all British Pacific territories goes to the Indian IPC?

      Does this also mean that there’s a possibility that there can be a houseruled seventh player as British India? Would it work?

      I also heard that the United States has a split income as well between the Atlantic and Pacific. So does that also mean that there could very well be an (again, houseruled) eighth player playing as either the European American forces or the Pacific American forces?

    • Rhode IslandAustin, Texas anyone?

      I JUST got Pacific 1940 yesterday, and although my parents have told me they know plenty of people that play Magic, the problem is just that: they play Magic, a card game, not board games. (And no, I do not live with my parents, I’m just on vacation with them out here. :-D) I’m still introducing my parents to wargaming via Memoir '44 and I haven’t met these Magic fanatics yet.

      So, is there another Axis and Allies nut out there in puny Rhode Island?

      EDIT: I am only up here on RI for vacation, but I really live in Austin, Texas and move back there the August of 11th. Any AA nuts in Austin at least?

      @Brain:

      @UN:

      Yep.

      How do you know?

      From the Wizards of the Coast site:

      So what’s new in Axis & Allies Europe 1940? First of all, if you already own Axis & Allies Pacific 1940 – nothing is really new in terms of rules and game pieces. That is unless you consider the first time appearance of France as a power in the game. Otherwise the two games are seamless in every way. Italy, first introduced in the Anniversary game, will be back. The Mediterranean, Africa, and the Middle East will become contested like never before with this deceivingly small Axis powerhouse on the move. The new tactical aircraft, dive bombers and torpedo planes are just as exciting and fun to play in Europe ‘40 as they are in Pacific ‘40. The mechanized infantry, however, will take on even more importance on the new game’s more land battle-oriented side of the globe.

      Although I’m not sure what he means when he said “future Axis and Allies”. If he meant future AA as in, beyond Europe 1940…I have no idea.  :?

      Krieg, the description seems to imply that France will be its own, seperate power, as in it will not be like China. Could they have changed the rules

      As I have said before, France will be a separate power, but it will not have a separate player, just like China.  The only difference is that France won’t have special rules like China does.

      Ehh. Good enough for me I guess. I should be lucky enough that France is a power, period.  :-D

      @Imperious:

      The new tactical aircraft, dive bombers and torpedo planes are just as exciting and fun to play in Europe ‘40 as they are in Pacific ‘40.

      So i guess this means the tactical bomber has different roles depending on what nation builds them: for Germany, Russia and Italy this is land based bonus, for UK, USA, Japan this is naval based bonus?

      Either that or the guy who wrote this has no idea what hes writing?

      Nothing has changed.  From the AAP40 Rulebook (page 27):

      Tactical bombers represent dive bombers in land operations and torpedo or dive bombers in naval operations.

      Krieg, the description seems to imply that France will be its own, seperate power, as in it will not be like China. Could they have changed the rules

      @CWO:

      The text on the WotC page describes the combined Pacific 1940 / Europe 1940 as “the most outrageous global World War II game ever published.”  Outrageous?

      @Napoleon:

      Rookie player….you know…i mean those who begin to play axis and allies…not some one who already play 50th anniversary each week…they got to learn in some ways and give them germany isn’t a good idea vs veterans

      France + China + Anzac can be fun to play for some one who is new to axis and allies…and for the wait…from 1940 its just cool to see the world war 2 turn in new ways…

      my opinion

      Well, my good Emperor, you might be right. It just really depends on what the player wants. If they are fine with playing as France or China or ANZAC, so be it. If they want to play as a major power, so be it.

      That’s what I do with noobie players; I let them pick. Something, I’m sure, is a foreign concept around these parts.  :wink:

      Oh… interesting. Are you serious?

      Depending on their budget, that could be a lot or a little.

      Nah, I’m not sure how much they spend on advertising. shrug But what I would do to see an Axis and Allies commercial…

      @LHoffman:

      I would agree with Lozmoid also. I guess it would have been fine by me if they had left off the flags… if they had done that in the first place we wouldn’t have had our previous discussion. I would agree that this new one looks more or less ‘boring’ in comparison to others I have seen. It also seems somewhat less creative. But hey… it is what it is, and I am still excited for it.

      Somebody had posted that they could make a different box to sell in Germany…

      While I think that would be the only way it would work, I doubt it would ever happen. Somebody mentioned how much AH spends on advertising… how much do they spend on that? I am curious, because I am not exposed to much of it.

      This much…
