      jkeller - trulpen 0-1

      My opponent, @jkeller, has not been seen online here since the 2nd of August. Hence there’s not bee any activity in our OOB semi final game for over 14 days. This means I may claim a victory by default according to the league rules. I think I have to do it, so this playoff may proceed. The other finalist has been waiting now for some time and probably wonder what we’re up to.

      This is rather unfortunate, especially since I was away for a long time earlier due to suffering from cancer and chemo therapy (still do). I communicated this with my opponent, who was understanding and considerate. A frustrating situation, but the pause might in a benevolent light be considered an ill-gotten vacation.

      I’m not particularly happy to claim this victory on these grounds. My opponent is a very strong player and I believe I’d most likely lose the game if it continued. My mind was set to a loss and avoiding it is not my reason for moving forward. Hope the community understands and especially also jkeller if/when he gets back here again.

      Great to see you back here! Sorry to hear about the troubles in life, although it’s perhaps not the worst kind.

      I can definitely revoke my claim, but as I understand it from the quote above jkeller agrees to forfeit and finds it the best solution. I’ll ask by PM to make sure.

      I would’ve taken an inf as casualty though, so I’ll adjust that.

      If Italy had gotten 3 or 4 hits there I think Germany would’ve had a great shot at conquering Moscow. I allowed it because I felt a bit outstretched. Really wanted to control Bryansk for atleast one more turn.

      It’s hard to do a thorough and detailed analysis of our game, but I might have a few general points.

      UK successfully crushed the italian fleet, but was at the same time left rather crippled for a while. US stepped in, but perhaps there should have been more pressure in the Med early, making Italy sweat a bit?

      Russia is very different from BM3. Richer and more powerful. I think Germany was allowed to make progress a bit too easy. Especially the mIC in Ukraine should’ve been possible to defend for atleast a while. It’s a valuable asset. You defended well, but was pressed back early on.

      The Pac is extra complex with all the island-hopping possibilities. Perhaps US was more pressed focusing on countering Japan than going for the Med? As it turned out Japan evolved into a Godzilla, which was probably unstoppable towards the end.

      That’s a huge investment. Like ksmckay says, it’s if anything used to be able to build slow-movers closer to the front. The question is if it’s efficient enough?

      We can look a bit on the math. Building a MIC costs 30. The turn after it’s possible to build inf and art there. For simplicity and the comparison of inf vs mech, lets say 10 inf are built.

      The alternative is of course to build mechs in Berlin. 10 mech costs 40. So you save 10 IPC from building 10 inf instead of 10 mech. But you have to build 30 inf over 3 turns in order to get square with 30 mech because of the cost of the factory.

      After 3 turns, you do get an economic advantage from the factory itself, of sorts. The problem here though is tempo. The mechs from Berlin reach for instance Ukraine at the same time (2 turns) as inf from Romania. Considering not being able to build units in a fresh factory, the mechs would even reach Ukraine 1 turn ahead of the romanians.

      Simply put, mech is the golden unit for Germany.

      In the beginning of the game tempo is of essence, especially for Axis. Germany needs to push not only strong, but also fast against the russians in order to succumb them. If it’s goes too slow, the advance will halt and the situation will be very annoying for the nazis.

      In OOB Russia is doomed from the start, but it needs a dedicated push. Germany should be able to take down Moscow by G6 no matter what.

      When it comes to a J1DOW, I’ve never employed it myself, but it’s my impression that it’s a killer opening in OOB.

      As ksmckay also pointed out, it’s more important to target the UK-fleet in z110 than z111. The latter one is a bit out of place and might be taken out in the following turn. I like to do a strafe on z111, keeping Bismarck alive. Feel free to check out the Germany Playbook for ideas.

      One thing I thought of is that you should take more care to deny the opponent NOs. Like Russia’s NO. My experience is that Russia never gets it in OOB. You let me have it several turns, which wasn’t necessary. A sub in z125 is sufficient until G has taken firm hold of Archangel.
