    • RE: Japan taking moscow

Well, supposing Japan takes either China, or India, or both, there’s really nothing standing between it and Moscow. If Japan throws an extra IC onto the mainland, it can send in six tanks every turn. Even if the U.S. goes after Japan, it takes a good 3 or 4 turns to get close enough to do any damage, which is more than enough time.

Japn is at least as big a problem for Russia as Germany.

    • RE: Making UK more exciting

The UK has alot of responsibilities on two different fronts. (which reminds me of another old debate I was going to re-open in a separate thread).

I do not think an IC in Africa is desirable or necessary because I don’t think that Germany needs to go after Egypt at all.
Just like historically, it funnels away troops which are desperately needed in the East for minimal gain. Yes, the gain is minimal. . .You can’t get to south Africa until G3 anyway, and if you decide to go after Italian East Africa on the way down, or French Equatorial Africa instead, it takes even longer, and your gain doesn’t recoup the cost of the troops used to take it.

Even 21 down, the UK can still make a great pain in the neck of itself for Germany,

In the old edition, Africa was important. In the revised edition, I’ve never seen it make a difference.

I wish my chief opponent would agree to an alchoholic A&A session.  Maybe then we’d see some variety. Or maybe I’d win once in a while. . .

    • RE: About Caucasus

With Russia I have always favoured quantity over quality. It has ever and always been infantry. I favour very large stacks of it on my capital.  However, with a recent string of losses i am begining to think that some artillery might not be a bad purchase. At least in the first round when you are not in any immediate danger.

( Nothing to do with my post, but I really wanted to make use of this emoticon)

    • RE: Strategic Withdrawal for Germany

Germany does seem rather weak in the begining. It seems he just bides his time, builds a stack and waits for the Japanese to bail him out. THat’s been my experience.

    • RE: Number of victory cities?

Yeah, but it was a two turn game, and so he had the luxery of throwing everything into Calcutta without having to worry about future turns. If he actually had to think about defending Russia, could he have pulled it off?

    • RE: Here's my situation, what would you do?

Well I went with the East Indies plan. He did not go after my flee, so I had time to build up and attack his. It worked beautifully, but by that time Russia was too far gone. He had so many tanks piled up  on both sides it was too little too late. If only this if only that.

Next time, I’ll have to keep this plan in mind and go for it much earlier. Concentrate on the pacific fleet, and try to keep the UK fleet in play longer, instead of sacrificing it.

What can I say, I was rusty! Next time!

    • RE: Here's my situation, what would you do?

Yes of course. Here I am stuck in old modes of thinking!  Since posting I have realized that Ihave just as much chance of taking East Indies as the Philipines, with more IC gain, and far less risk to my fleet. And then the IC is of course an excellent idea. ( I neglected to mention that Borneo is occupied by the British)

      Thanks guys!

    • Here's my situation, what would you do?

Nevermind the introductions (I used to post here a few years ago, but have gone on A&A hiatus, now I’m back!), I’m in a bit of a pickle.

I started the game strong as the allies, but made a few serious miscalculations which will probably cost me the game. It is my opinion that in the revised edition, the U.S. must go after Japan. But we can argue that later.

It is currently the U.S. turn. I have 1 battleship, 2 destroyers, 1 aircraft carrier, two planes and 2 transports sitting in a zone 45 (Solomon Islands - captured w. 2 inf)

Japan has built two ICs on the Mainland, has captured China, Sikiang, India, The Soviet Far east, Yakut and Barratia.

( don’t ask me how I let this happen. Like I said, serious miscalculations)

Japan’s fleet in sea zone 60 consists of 2 battleships, 1 destroyer, 1 aircraft carrier, 2 fighters and 1 transport.

The way i see it, I have three options, and I don’t like any of them.

1.) Attack the main fleet with all I have, including 1 bomber from the Hawaiian islands.

(I’ve run two simulations and lost both times)

      2.) Conquer the Philipine islands.

( Leaves my fleet vulnerable to attack by 4 extra planes from Mainland)

      3.) Sit tight.

(may be joined by two extra subs next turn, 1 of them british).

The Japs are running rampant. I don’t see how I can seriously damage them short of miracle rolling.

      Any thoughts, anyone?

    • RE: The delay before the USA enters action

I really don’t think it’s necessary. It would just make for a more boring game for the U.S. player. I’d love to see convoy zones or some such thing.
