The problem is that Hasbro owns WOTC and Hasbro and makes more money off action figures and dolls than they can on our ‘Holy Grail’ of a boardgame.

The only reason WOTC is a household name is due to Magic the Gathering. How famous is AD&D ?, TSR was bought out by WOTC. Remember the old WEG Star Wars RPG? A huge license like Star Wars wasn’t enough to save them either. Guess who got that license? WOTC.

I’ll make the prediction that within 2 or 3 years the whole A&A line up will disapear. So my advice is to stock up on A&A products while you still can.

Hasbro’s atittude is that these are toys the same as GI Joe, and if it doesn’t make money it doesn’t get made.

Remember that a capital manages infrastructure and IPC’s are representative of production and infrastructure. Even in war soldiers are paid as are the people who build their weapons. If Washington fell tomorrow how many of us can just get together with the nieghbors and build a tank? Not to mention the only thing of yours that would have value is hard goods and equipment. I f the Chinese invaded tomorrow do you think Canadians or Mexicans would except US dollars for guns?

That’s why I think the money should go back to the bank, or as cruel twist of fate, the assests are frozen and given to the loser’s allies as if they were a government in exile.

I get the concept but it’s stupid to me. I haven’t liked the sub rules since classic either. Back in my day subs were a kick ass part of the game and it was always funny to see that lone transport smoke a fighter….Alas those days are gone.

it’s not all about esthetics. it’s that there are defective parts i’d be happier if I had some cardboard counters or the MB edition generic pieces.

and yes 100 dollars is expensive.

I haven’t played AA50 yet so bear with me. If transports have no combat value then why even bother putting them in the equation?
Secondly, if we’re gonna start ignoring units with the justification that they aren’t really a factor why don’t we ignore bombers when a territory is being defended. b-17’s and he-111’s, etc were definately not a defensive weapon lol…jk. subs did have anti air on them as did a significant number of transports in ww2. to say that subs cannot defend against air attack and that transports ‘especially military transports’ didn’t have defensive armament to counter air/naval attack doesn’t make sense.

surface units can simply ignore subs and transports…tell that to Churchill and Doernitz.

oh god i complained about this a thousand times.

i’m not just bitching about this.

the last two aa games i’ve purchased aar and aa50 have had pieces that i’ve had to shave, heat’n’bend, and wings bend so bad they could’ve been worn like a halloween/novelty ring. i’m here to play aa not decorate f*****g cupcakes!!!

      Whew where’s the tylenol?

This game is awsome but i want parts that dont have to lean on an idustrial complex to stand up.

    • RE: AA50 Worth it?

i agree the game is great. i’m not looking for a glorified micro-machines set. but when i bought AAR a couple yrs ago. I had to take some of my acs and hold them over a burner to soften the plastic enough to bend it straight……NO B*ST!!!

there are all kinds of deformed parts in there that I had to fix. AA50 hasn’t been that bad. but pretty close. i’ve had to pull my hobby knife far more than i’d like.

do you want to play with a b-17 that came out of the box…out of the plastic bag…with wings that were f*****g bent in neary half.

actually, if memory serves me. you might be able to get generic equivalents from tabletactics.com. the pieces are very high quality and they’re the only place i’ve seen where you can get these parts.

Well I wasn’t gonna wait. I ponnied up the $100 plus tax. I know I could get it cheaper if I waited, but frankly the gaming store I went to was burning through them and all the major retailers had no idea what I was talking about when asking when they would get it.

This game is worth it, even at a hundred bucks.

An option would be to freeze the money and institute a simple “no buy” rule until the capital is liberated.

    • RE: G U A R D - german submarine and air strategy for AA50

I posted this elsewhere on AA.org.

The only way I’ve been able to make subs of any use is by implementing a house rule that effects the economics of the game.

One way you can do this is to let your subs perform commerce raids. You can do this by allowing them to attack the coastlines of territories that have ICs on them the way an SBR is conducted in the air. You can use destroyers as a kind of “AA gun”.

The other option is to allow a bonus for subs of -1 ipc per round, per unit, loss to enemy ipcs when the victory check is done. The teams/sides will divide the cost amongs themselves and turn the money into the bank. This makes subs a nasty little menace that I don’t think they get the credit for in the game.

The other option I came up with is to consider transports as mobile ICs as far as them being strategic targets, allowing subs to SBR/commerce raid them. the TRs aren’t destroyed but a IPC penalty would apply.

Just a thought, but subs are kind of useless in my AA world otherwise.

    • RE: AA50 Worth it?

My opinion is mixed I bought it but I’m still itching to play.

      The cardboard stuff is nice.
The plastic stuff I think is, in many instances is poorly formed and has quality issues. I would have been happier with the old generic pieces from 84/91 editions. This is no excuse however because AAE and AAP’s parts were vastly superior in quality to AAR’s. Nice artwork on cardboard counters would be a helluva’lot nicer than the “Dollarstore” micro army men they packed in AAR’04 and this current edition of AA50.

I know there’s alot of kids and dorks who secretly play with the parts but when T have vessel that have to be shaved so they don’t tip over it really pisses me off. This game is worth buying overall but for a hundred bucks I’d expect better quality.

If you’re a ‘noob’ I’d suggest that you but this over ‘revised’ first. This is a culmination of all the previous editions and spin-offs and worth it if you consider all the good times you’ll have verses a couple of videogames for your average computer/ videogame console.

My salt in this posting is that I’ve played AA since '93 and always thought it would be cool to have German tanks look like German Tanks and British Fighters look like Spitfires. They did a crappy job and I had to say it.

Lastly, I’m sick of typos and constantly having to clarify rules and other BS. Is it too much to ask?

I bought AA50 and can’t wait to play, and overall I say buy it.

You could simply say that plunder is remitted to the bank rather than the capturing player. The victor gains the future income as reward itself and would eliminate possible trading in some instances.

    • RE: Subs still marginalized…by DD this time...

Here’s a house rule that we used to use back in the the day:

      attack 2
      defend 2
defend 1 against air units when no surface units present
special attack: commerce raid against coastal ics similar to strategic bombing raids

the alternative is that you can do the same attack against frieghters but with no actual loss of the frieghter and the destroyer acting as an anti sub similar to an aa gun.

historically subs did fend off air attack but usually losing.
