    • RE: FMG, HBG, OOB Pieces Comparison

The 41 planes look a lot better IMO. The HBG FW190 isn’t that bad but it doesn’t feel nearly as solid as the OOB. I may just paint the FW190 solid gray or black, stain and seal them jut to give them some weight.

Yep you’re right. I can tell the difference in real-life or drawings on a larger size pic. At this scale WOTC didn’t exactly put a lot of detail in theirs. I think the HBG is much better looking. You almost can’t see the ball turret on the OOB WOTC. I just got AAP40.1 in august and could’ve sworn they have US tac bomber listed as a Dauntless in the rulebook, but hey I’ve only looked at it twice just to get it punched and bagged for play later.

BTW I just got my Avengers today along with my Corsairs, Warhawks and Mustangs. I’m alittle bit down about my Warhawks and Mustangs though. Thier molding isn’t the best and they seem a bit on the frail side. These will definately need paint and glaze at a minimum to give them some substance. Same with FW190, although light seems to be molded better

Chips are cool but I really am fine with just using the old chips. Unless I’m totally INF stacking the best ones are white or gray anyway. The A&A custom chips are cool but if I want superflous pieces to ad flavor I’ll buy HBG aircraft.

      @LHoffman:

Here are all aircraft types together.

From left to right back row:   P-38, Hellcat, HBG Corsair, HBG Fw-190, Bf-109.

Middle row:   HBG P-51, OOB Zero, HBG Avenger, OOB Avenger, HBG P-40.

Front:   HBG B-25 Mitchell medium bomber, OOB B-17.

An overall comparison… The B-25s are nice. The HBG Avenger is much more detailed than the OOB piece, complete with ball turret and panes of glass in the cockpit canopy. It is very barely smaller than the OOB Avenger, but that is not a bad thing; more contrast between the tactical bomber and the strategic bombers, plus it might fit on the carrier more easily.

Second picture is a different shot. The only addition being the middle plane in the back row: HBG C-46 Commando Transport plane.

Actually the OOB dive bomber is a Dauntless not an Avenger.

An old copy of “Attack!” will work great for neutrals. You can find a brand new copy for as low as $10US on Amazon. I believe there’s amany as eight colors, maybe ten. The scale is compatible to A&A size.

As far as painting I’m looking to start out with simple stylized paint schemes that give the look and feel of the original piece but adding detail at the same time. I’m going to forego decals or painting national markings as the scale is just too damn small to make painting en masse viable for potential sale.

I plan to use Testor’s enamel to paint a two-tone paint scheme using the national color and paint and ink to weather and detail. I’m probably going to go against the grain for my fist set and use a high gloss hard finish to make the pieces detailed but still “game like” so if I or a customer wants to use the custom pieces in other games they will have extra detail but still match with the OOB sets. In addition it will enable destinction for house rules.

As of this post I am still researching painting techniques and have some of my equipment. I’l start with some experimental models which I hope to post in the near future.

The white, black and red paint scheme was used on many Japanese aircraft mostly IJN aircraft.

    • RE: Why are the allies so gimped lately? Why transports suck?

I allow heavy bombers for SBR and combat. The interception HR is just for pre-SBR combat. T bomber attacks at 1 to reflect it’s defensive armament during that round. Either side may retreat after the first round or until all defending interceptors are destroyed. Then the SBR begins with an AA roll of 1 round then the SBR roll.

Swedo what do you do to prep your sculpts? All I hear is pime, prime, and prime.

Do you get any chipping? What do you use to seal?

    • RE: Tricked out my AA50th - pics in a bucket

Thanks LH. I went there. This guy on Youtube got actual stickers appearantly. His method for doing his pieces seal the peel-and-press stickers on the piece.

His method is a bit un-convential but I like it. The finished product actually increases the durability of the piece, he was practically bouncing it off the table lol.

My project will be 1941 because it’s a small game and I want to finish it in a reasonable time, I plan to do a light stylized set of pieces. the problem comes in when you have pieces that are all the same hence the need for national markings. I’m artistic but I DON’T have the skill to try and do national emblems on the pieces. Hence I liked the idea of those self adhesive decals.

Does anyone know of where to get some peelable stikers or decals? I’m going to start on a 1941 edition. I looked up a Youtube video on painting techniques and the guy said he got stickers from zazzle.com, I couldn’t find them any smaller than 1/2 inch.

    • RE: FMG, HBG, OOB Pieces Comparison

I just picked up a whole bunch of pieces from HBG. Most were aircraft and ships. I bought the OD green for army units. and Dark Green for Marines. I’ll be using it in 1942.1. A suggestion for the LVT is to use it as a “Marine Tank” the HR stats will be the same as a regular tank just Marines for flavor. As for the Avenger It will be used as a fighter. IIRC I bought just a couple of the B-25s which will have same stats as a fighter in my version but two will be placed on carrier in tribute to the Doolittle Raid. I also bought extra Tiger tanks, escort carriers, Warhawks, Mustangs, Falschirmjagers, and a personal favorite…HE-111s

    • RE: HBG's expansion/supplement sets.

I just bought a bunch of planes for AA42.2. I like P38s but I’m sick of them. After pay day I’ll buy some more lol.

I’ve discovered buying only what I think I’ll need plus being selective about not buying every dang thing on the site in excitement keeps things extremely affordable.

I just got a nice Luftwaffe complete with HE-111s and FW-190s. I also opted for P40s and Mustangs for my European air campaign as well as Corsairs and Avengers which I will use as fighters for 42.2. Finally my USAAF and Navy will look right.

    • RE: HBG's expansion/supplement sets.

I’d personally like to see more modern pieces like Table Tactics did in the new colors.

Also not to bash on HBG and FMG, I love thier work. I just would like more uniform sets. The Marines set for one is cool but If I don’t have Marines for everyone else it doesn’t do me much good unless maybe I’m playing a Pac Theater game or something.

Sets that have x number of the same classes would make it easier for me to pull my wallet. I can justify the expense of buying several colors or countries sculpts if every nation has a compatible line up. AS IT SITS NOW I WANT TO BUY EVERYTHING LOL.

Additionally, large bags of single units would be awesome possibly even a super set of everything would be nice.

    • RE: Too Many Forums Sections?

I think adding sections is fine. there are plenty of folks who don’t have any idea how large the A&A universe is, having all of the forum categories lets people new to A&A explore the franchise.
