Maybe A1/2* D2/3* M1 C3/2.5* Special: Marines may be puchased at 2 for 5 IPCs and directly on transports when puchased at the same time adjacent to any one teritory that includes an IC and NB. Marines may attack at 2 on a 1:1 basis during an amphibious assault when accompanied by destroyers, cruisers, or battleships. Marines attacking with fighters or tactical bombers increase by +1 on a 1:1 ratio when tac bombers or fighters orginating from an AC are involved in combat. Marines defending a territory with a NB have a +1 added to two or less Marines.

NAs: Globe and Anchor- The first time Japan attacks Hawaii during the game the US may have 2 Marines placed in WUSA after the conclusion of the attack. (Once per game.)
Old Glory Raised- If the US captures and holds Iwo Jima for one round of play the US recieves 2 Marines unit to be placed at either WUSA or Hawaii. (Once per game.)

I need to think on this a bit more but I think I have some great ideas about marines. My Great-uncle was a Marine Paratrooper in WWII and would’ve been assigned to a very elite unit until it was scrapped by the allies due to cost and logistics. Some of the stories he told my Grandmother really reflected the animosity the Marines held for MacArthur and the Army. What I learned mostly is that the Marines were able to do much more with less logistically and new how to fight harder than the boys in the ETO. While the Army in the PTO were in hell the USMC was in the the basement of Hell.

Using this as a guideline I’m trying to incorperate this into my game stats. I’ll keep you posted.

Well I bought the Axis minor infantry with a panzerfaust to reperesent Axis engineers/marines, I bought yellow, brown, and dark grey. I bought the infantry with a field cap and rifle in the same colors for paratroopers or marines. I also bought the FMG Italain medium/bomber transport for use as a transport. I bought OOB He-111s in orange and black from AA41 to use as transports for Japan and Germany. Mind you that I haven’t worked out all the details and now that we have more German units I will probably change my original vision of thier implementation. I also bought some red JAP infantry to represent Japanese Marines this will stay for sure. In additon I bought a whole bunch of thier US sculpts in OD and Dark Green for other uses.

As far a marines go they need either a mobility/deployment advantage or a combative advantage to make them worthwhile as a game mechanic. Otherwise they simply add flavor to the mix.

I have also considered making the USMC as a separate minor player balancing it with the Afrikakorps for the Axis and giving control to the Russian or UK player for the USMC and Japan for the Afrikakorps depending on which AA version we’re playing. Of course these would be funded by Germany or US resepective to thier player countries.
You may ask why?: 1. If the US/German player must fund a force which they have not control over it simulates to difficulties for the logistics the commandr of both forces faced. 2. Having the USMC for the Allies and Afrikakorps for the Axis gives either side unique challenges and advantages. 3. It gives the Russian player something fun to do if they control the Marines.

    • RE: Marines

Giving Marines a sneak attack like say submarines or something that reflects thier elite status in combat would be accurate. You could even do this without changing attack/defense stats.

My transport idea came from the fact that Marines even today aren’t supplied with the best equipment and operate with a lot less logistics than any other branch of the armed forces.

Depending on which game we are playing Marines could also have the ability to be deployed directly on naval bases rather than only at ICs.

Some of my ideas a just general and need to be fleshed out a bit more. HBG gave me the ability to put some of these into fruition.
I know there are going to be some who will bring balance into the equation and rightfully so, but try running a solo game there may be counters to any said advantage that could be worked out. Again I’m using HBG sculpts to build Axis units to balance this out.

Just another idea: Try using the Dark green sets from HBG as Marines also. of course that then complicates things but adds the Marine flavor to the game. I am also in the process of adding paratroopers, marines and engineers to Germany, Japan and Italy SO I FEEL YOUR PAIN! LOL

      Hope this helps.

You could give improved attacking stats but stipulate that only so many Marines can be on the board at one time. Additionally they can transport three to a transport if only Marines are carried by said transport. On the other hand you could give them a sneak attack.

    • RE: Sitting or Moving?

I personally like to have an are dedicated soley to the game and a near by table for refreshment along with good seating. Believe it or not this can be done. I prefer drinks especially to be well away from the board, a simple TV tray can do this. I don’t have a custom board. but I am uusually able to set up an arrangement that accomodates both.

      Nice work!

It really takes some brass to start painting. I started with some P-40s from HBG. They looked awesome until I dipped them. ishould’ve primed them or not have dipped them.

A good way to practice is to buy some army men. Wash them. Dry them. Prime them. Paint with model paints and detail with permenant markers if you wish. Then dip them with Minwax Polyshade. When they dry they will be super shiney if you like that look you can leave it or spay a coat of dull acryllic coating.

When you’re with this process you will give weight and durability to the pieces. You can damn near bounce them off the wall without a scratch.

As far as my P-40 debacle, I ended up painting over them again in a simple olive drab and re-dipped them. They didn’t look as fancy but it gave the small planes a much heavier and solid feel. Additionally the Minwax sealer gave a weathered “veteran” look that stands out from the plain plastic look.

      Good Painting! and Good Luck!

    • RE: First Impressions of Axis & Allies 1914

The most realistic depiction of tank usage in this game would be to have tanks almost exclusively offensive. Their impact towards the end of the war was very significant.

I don’t like what I’m hearing about the fighters.

I think an extensive optional set of rules should or should have been included in the game. the sculpt are a little un-refined from the few pictures I can find around the net.

      Rail should’ve been included.

Though not really as much of a factor but, damn I wanted a zepplin or two. Fortification of some sort would’ve been nice too.

    • RE: Countering KJF as Japan in 1942SE

      @texasranger97:

Build a factory on mainland Asia on turn 1
Then try to engage us fleet ASAP to wipe it to delay the US
If you cant, stay defensive, use your fleet to protect transport bound for Asia to counter Britain production in India
Let the US engage the naval battle
This should buy enough time for Germany to crush Russia and send backups and even try Sealion

This… I usually mass my Jap fleet at the home island or in a central SZ that can react quickly to a USN attack.

    • RE: Worst part of the game so far

      @Imperious:

Production glitches were made, but declaring the game needs a major change in terms of it’s ideas is premature if it was not played.

And the ideas are fine, just that you will be better informed if a few games have been played first.

I agree a full review of a book based on it’s jacket is ridiculous.  However a preview of the first few chapters will give you a good idea of what the rest of the book is like. I do reserve any judgement until its too late any way LOL… after I’ve already bought and opened the box.

I don’t like the whole Russian revolution rules if I base it soley on the comments I’ve read thus far. I also don’t care for the aircraft rules without the benefit of an actual copy and playing through it. Yes you’re right calling it broken without actual gameplay is unfair.

    • RE: Worst part of the game so far

@IL I don’t think too harsh a judgement can be made without actually playing it, that I can agree with. However I don’t think that we ever get the best product any more. That being said I’m excited about this game. I have had disappointments with the franchise ever since Revised (My UK units aren’t lime green like everyone else’s brand new copy) and AA50 as far as quality of materials. Without going too off topic some of the rules and regulations in the series have been complicated and confusing to a casual old school classic player.

Still I will buy this game and if nothing else it looks like a lot of fun. I can see a possible after game showdown between the victors incorporating WW2 sculpts. I don’t mind far fetched, that’s what I loved about Classic possible but improbable was always fun and you could always change things.

The game looks great!  House rules? No problem. Generic sculpts? I grew up with Classic. Buying a copy? Hell yeah… maybe two.

      @Razor:

I’ll say for sure nobody on this board will by the game to get that derogatory map, they will buy it to get the new inf pieces to use as neutrals in the G40

Hey Razor, off topic but relevant to your post, Attack! by Eagle games is a great resource for neutral sculpts. It was going for as cheap ten bucks on Amazon.

    • RE: I have the game

Haven’t ordered mine yet. I would suggest the infantry size discrepancy is either an optical illusion or perhaps a subtle attempt by Avalon to aid player’s abiity to distinguish oposing forces on a crowded board.

    • RE: Using 1914 pieces in 1940

Always an interesting thought that comes up with every new release of an A&A game. We have been so plastic piece starved before HBG and FMG we almost HAVE to find a use for cool new stuff… still thinking here. If the HBG guys are reading this though it would be awesome if you guys could get the old Table Tactics moulds and produce the units they used to sell. I’d love to have a cold war conflict after an A&A match… it would make for some pretty interesting possibilties.

    • RE: TripleA Maps Error

Windows Vista. Java 7. TRIPLEA1.6.1.2 with Java exe installer.
The game starts up with no problem. When I go into the find maps option, the web addresses show up but when I click the button to actually go to one of the map repository sites I get a message that reads: “error: title” the message is in a small box when you hit the find maps or list games button.

    • TripleA Maps Error

Just downloaded 1_6_1_2 actually several times. I had to uninstall and re-install several times. I have latest version of Java. Before I kept getting error messages the whole time and some maps/senarios simply wouldn’t work.

Needless to say the latest download has more maps but when I try to look up more maps I get an error stating:“error TITLE”.

I’m no computer whiz but I can’t figure out what the hell is going on. I love TripleA and realize that the game is done as a labor of love, so I’m not trying to complain to loudly but this is frustrating as all hell.

      Can anyone please help?

    • RE: Would You Purchase A Reprint of "Classic" Axis & Allies?

LOL yeah I was thinking that it would be cool to have a classic board on both side except one side would include Italy and maybe France with a simple 40 set up and a classic 42 set up. you could also just do the 41 style pieces reminiscent of the classic generic style pieces with the addition of French and Italian colored pieces.
