We have an ongoing double elimination Classic tournament going here right now, but I think actual separate tournaments are rare.
As long-time moderator of the Axis&Allies.org league, I point you to the league section under Play Boardgames here.
Since you’d love to meet new people and compete a little bit, I really think you will be happy picking up some league games.
Although it’s called “league” there isn’t really any sign up or registration or commitment. Scan over the pinned league rules thread, and you can just post in the “Find League opponents thread” that you are new and want a game (or more). Soon someone will contact you and help you set up and get playing.
While the league has been for G40 and variants of it ever since G40 came out, you can also play someone a Classic game and it will count in league and has its own leaderboards. That is new this year. So if you’re not familiar with G40, you can play Classic. Otherwise, for a game of AA50 or Spring 42 or something, fish around in the “play boardgames” section where games are just informal and for fun.
League also does not need to be taken too seriously as to standings. We have them primarily so that you can gauge the strength of your opponent before playing. I highly recommend you check the league boards (see the league rules) to size up a potential player’s ability.
