Eisenhower and Patton were also involved in this but I am pretty sure MacArthur was in charge(need to look it up).
do you meen patton was in the korean war (he was dead in 1945)

no I wasn’t talking about the Korean War-

I was talking about the military action against a “hooverville” in the 1930s.  Macarthur was in command of that particular incident. Patton and Eisonhower were also involved as subordinates. “The Bonus Army” if that makes it more clear.

    • RE: Why are boosters worth it

Noble Knight Games has all the ships sorted by Nationality as well as the booster pack.

I ordered half a case of WaS a week ago and out of six packs got one allied first line carrier, the Ark Royal. I still have to pick up the Big E. though. Might take my extras of Hood and Bismark to work and have put em on my desk somewhere…

Has anyone seen or tried the new vinyl map they have out now?

    • RE: SBR: 1981-2009

It might make a huge differnce when this game is combined with the European version. SBR is usually fairly effective against Germany. I don’t think I ever used in the Pacific though (unless you count Japan hitting Russia in revised).

But makes you wonder if Hasbro just decided that kids couldn’t do the math unaided.

Wonder if the abacus will find its way into a hasbro game then. :P

You’re absolutely right Frimmel, but you would be surprised how many people think simply not using a wood based product is the same as going green. Tech just seems to sell. On the other hand I did see a copy of battleship that didn’t light up, didn’t talk, just the classic looking game….I even saw Stratego right next to it!

My oldest is almost ready for chutes and ladders - far cry from AandA…

    • LOTRO

Got sucked into it a year or two ago when Dark Age of Camelot sunk to the bottom of the Laurentine(sic) Abyss. I have enjoyed the game emmensely and they devs did a pretty good job sticking to the lore for the main story and a lot of little side stories. The graphics are just plain gorgeous. The game relies heavily on grouping, you can play music in game (people actually have their own bands) and there is just a ton of different stuff to do. The only weakness is PvP which seems to have been added as an afterthought, I only do that when I have the kids in bed and my usual buddies are already in bed.

My favorite areas of the game are the Lonelands(foothill country between Bree and Rivendell), Eregoin(spelling) mountain country south of Rivendell and the Trollshaws, and Evendim with a massive lake and the ancient city of kings Annuminas. I don’t like Angmar too much because Orcs and assorted bad guys don’t like pretty areas. They tend to burn and kill all the trees and put up smelly camps and forts everywhere.

Is there a PC platform for the game?I have seen 1942 pc platforms. I quit buying console games while in school- too much dang money.

It seems to me that cutting paper is merely cutting costs to the product. “going green” by not using paper seems a pretty silly idea to me, more a marketing scheme than any practical value.

    • RE: World of Warcraft

I tired WoW for awhile. I used to play Dark Age of Camelot but that game was run into the ground and my guild mostly moved to WOW. I just did not like wow at all. Lord of the Rings came out about this time and I got sucked into that and enjoy it immensely.

The main reason I didn’t like wow is it felt too shallow and the graphics were too “cartoony” for my taste. It lacked a very interesting epic storyline (which is what drew me into DAoC and LOTRO). WoW also seemed to have a very large portion of immaturity amongst the players for my taste.

    • RE: Most over-rated WWII Leader

MacArthur let his planes get strafed and shot to hell after hearing about pearl, was a pr hound, among other things. The two things that stand out the most about him though, was being relieved by Truman during the Korean War and also he was in charge of the removal of a Hooverville outside DC in the thirties. Eisenhower and Patton were also involved in this but I am pretty sure MacArthur was in charge(need to look it up). This turned out to be a huge embarrassment to Hoover, on top of everything else that went wrong.

Montgomery almost all the leaders who had to work with that guy seemed to dislike him, including Churchill. His most well known aggressive plan turned out to be a dismal failure.

Patton made his share of mistakes too; the raid on the prison camp, his supply lines were always a mess, and of course well known “slapping” incidents.  On the other hand he made a number of predictions that did turn out to be true in a tactical and strategic sense about the fighting in Italy and Soviet Union (to name two off the top of my head). Patton also understood tanks better than most military commanders, he commanded some of the first tanks in WWI. Of These three I would rather have Patton in charge.

Thats would also apply to the Americans and British too.

none of them understood that air power can reduce ships to nothing unless the other side also has air power to protect the skies

Billy Mitchell understood that….maybe a few others.  of course Mitchell made a few people pretty mad in his efforts to prove his point…

    • RE: Best World War II movie?

I really got a kick out of Connery in The Longest Day. There were a few little things that made me do a double take in that one (both book and film), the poor guys who put their boots on the wrong feet, the two opposing squads who were so shocked when they passed each other that neither started a fight, bagpipes on the beach, a number of others.

I read Band of Brothers some time after seeing Saving Private Ryan and have not watched SPR since then. Interestingly enough Hanks produced Band of Brothers after SPR. I must say I got into Band of Brothers more than any other WW2 film or series in recent memory.

And while Jermo is correct in stating that the purpose of all movies excepting documentaries is to make money there are some types of people involved in the movie industry who also want to do their best to get the story right, as close as they can. Midway, A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day, and We Were Soldiers (not WW2 but still a pretty good example) all can fit into this category. A few things always get changed from books or history to the screen sadly.

The films of that era were different. Not just the acting but special effects and the types of things in film in general. John Wayne always seemed to play John Wayne (which is fine with me by the way). There were a lot more films of that era that I don’t mind watching with my kids awake. But I can’t watch Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers with the little ones awake.

take a look at game outfitter online

      http://www.gameoutfitter.com/category-s/447.htm?gclid=CNng8tGBqZ8CFQJaagodnG1H0g

There are probably better deals on the net. It is still better than picking up locally here in Reno. There are few places that have some rare pieces- noble knight games has a few but I am sure you can find some a hair cheaper at other places.

    • RE: Battleship Bismarck

if he finished it off the British would have nothing to maintain any contact with Bismarck

I still think they would have pulled out the stops to get Bismark. Whether or not they could have done so is a different story. Still, the loss of both the Hood and Prince of Wales would have been a terrible demoralizing blow.

After Bismark and Titanic ship builders should refrain from declaring any ship built anywhere “Unsinkable”.

    • RE: Battleship Bismarck

Didn’t the English ships (Hood and Prince of Wales) mistake the Prinz Eugen for the Bismark initially?

The other waste was not pressing against Prince of whales. It could have easily been taken out and a huge victory secured.

Any idea why they didn’t do that?

I heard the Dominican Republic was untouched. Whether that was because the quake didn’t hit with the same severity there or if they were better prepared for it.

    • RE: Do you want canada as a power

One of things about the "global game"is that there are so many new powers. I think what they should have considered was different sculpts for some of these powers still under the control of one player (limit the differing scuplts for Canada and Anzac to Infantry maybe). In the European version Canada as a power should be fine. In the global game a trillion different powers will drive me nuts.

I would rather see different infantry sculpts for Anzac and Canada rather than see them as whole new powers, merely to keep gameplay flowing.

    • RE: Battleship Bismarck

Convoys were the only way for England to get just about everything they needed. If that system failed then I think UK would have folded.  The Bismark and the Prinz Eugen would probably have been hunted down to the bitter end. Consider the force directed at Bismark after she blew the Hood out of the water. The Brits sent every possible thing they could after that behemoth. Even so it was one lucky torpedo hit that caused her to circle that spelled her doom at the end. How many times did the allies try to sink Bismark’s sister ship the Tirpitz before they finally pulled it off?

U boats were a danger but their effectiveness appears to have decreased significantly as the war went on. Whether this was due to losses, better methods of detecting and sinking them, better armored ships on the part of the allies or some other factors I honestly don’t know. I do know that they were effective early on but like so much else in World War 2 in the case of the Axis they could not take prolonged war.

I was stoked I got both The Bismark and the Hood early on for my WAS collection off topic but it made me happy.
