      @Nowhere:

      Has anyone actually printed this map? Maybe its just me, i dunno, but it seems subdued/pixelated compared to the Adobe Maps of Dedo and Imperious… but i could totally be off base or maybe i need glasses?

      At what size do you want to print the file? As per my last response you should be fine around 80 inch wide. But you can easily make a test print of a small portion of the map at the number of pixels per inch you want to go for to see the effects of enlarging the file.

      Let me know if it helps if I create a few files of different enlargements that are small enough to print on a standard A4 or Letter page. Then you can see for yourself. Do know that colors will always differ between your home prints and professional print equipment.

      @P@nther:

      @2Huskies:

      I’ve never printed a game map before, but I am excited to start doing this, starting with Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition. With this file, if printed on vinyl at about 3 ft by 6 ft there anything I should know or processes I should take to get a clean, clear print?

      This size can be achieved without modifying the pixel count and without quality effects simply by scaling: enhance dpi from 150 to 250.
      While keeping the pixels at 17776x9162 this - when printing with 250 dpi  - results in an image size of 71,1x36,6 inches, so approximately 6x3 ft.

      This is an easy task for your image manipulation software.

      However, I am not a printing expert - so others hopefully add their knowledge regarding the printing aspects.

      You are right P@nther, the files is limited by it’s pixels simply because it’s a scan of the original which has a limited pixel resolution. In this case it was scanned with 400 pixels per inch to keep file size reasonable and be able to enlarge the file to roughly twice the size of the original map.

      I just returned from a week long skiing trip, so this is a short reply to hopefully answer some of the questions.

      The scan has been created with 400 dpi. Knowing that 250 dpi is the limit for high quality print work, you can easily enlarge the print to 1.5 times the size of OOB. (roughly 71.1 inch by 36.6 inch)

      Even a dpi of 200 might hardly be noticeable during game play so you could go to twice the OOB size. (88.9 inch by 45.8 inch)

      @Imperious Leader: the file really is PNG. The pixel effect you see in the file is scanning noise which is created by the scanner. And saving it as PDF helps nothing in my case, given the fact my file is PNG already which is a lossless compression.

    • RE: Where to start?

      The customizations that I like most are ones that are quite generic and can be used and reused for multiple AA games.

      The most noteworthy are hit dice (which significantly speeds up game play) and magnetic flight stands and carriers.

      @Natneo:

      Your work is very nice ! it’s the little details that make the difference !

      Thanks! The downside of attention for details is that it takes time and time and even more time, but I like it!

      @bgugs:

      When do you expect this map to be done? Also, would you be okay with me taking it to use for my custom map? I mainly will be changing territories and values (as you can see in the progress I had made). I am asking since I will be changing programs and will likely have to restart. So I figure I might as well restart with a well done map. However, if this will take a few more months I will likely continue to use IE’s map

      I expect to finish this map second half of April. Shouldn’t take to long anymore.

      And I will post a few versions of my map on the forums so feel free to reuse it for you purpose. I would love to see the fruit of my time and effort be used by other enthusiasts within this community.

      @siredblood:

      Ya their islands are terrible, if you look you’ll find almost all of them are wrong…. one of the ones they managed to get right, they put it upside down lol.

      I personally don’t mind some free hand approximations but putting Atlantis between Celebes and Dutch New Guinea is a bit to much. Although with Zombies coming to AA…  :-P

      @siredblood:

      While your fixing things, I listed more errors on my thread, misspelled china territories, Calcutta is in wrong location, etc, the list is right before the newest pics on page 12.

      Thanks sired! I was aware of the Suiyuyan -> Suiyuan that needs to be corrected, but it seems you changed far more names. Could you share the source of these changes? I did some “googling” but found many different spellings of same areas and some were hard to find to begin with.

      Nevermind, Wikipedia has the answer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_administrative_divisions_of_China_(1912%E2%80%9349)

      This means there are three misspellings in China (as sired already changed on his map):

      • Anhwe -> Anhwei

      • Hopei -> Hopeh

      • Suiyuyan -> Suiyuan

      Hence more todos  :-D

      And I will look into Calcutta.

      An other thing on my todo list is the horrible fake island near Celebes. But first I will focus on finishing the sea zones on the Europe side of the board.

    • RE: Tjoek's 1940 Global Map file and setup charts (Updated May 30th 2018)

      After finishing retouching all the scratches and other small damages on the boards / scans it’s time to work on the bigger picture. Resulting in some good progress. I’ve been working on the color differences in the sea zones and have finished the pacific and indian ocean. If I mist a spot please let me know. :wink:

      What you can see in the images:

      • The color balanced sea zones off course

      • The removed neutral army icons (as I play with miniatures from HBG)

      • 2nd edition changes to the board (West Canada, Mexico, no Burma Road name on the board, Palau Island spelling correction)

      • fixes to the board (Iwo Jima in right orientation, Honolulu to the right location)

      • Himalaya stronger black stroke on text (exactly as other text on the board)

      • Calcutta and Sidney now show the square capital instead of the round VC icon. Once again thank you for spotting this sjlr1.

      • Anything I missed to tell you  8-)

      Pacific

      Indian Ocean

    • RE: Anniversary Map?

      For the once liking the OOB map. Here is my scan of the 2nd edition map:
      https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=41446.0

      When I have the time (my focus is currently on some Global 1940 customizations) I want to update at least the Iwo Jima and Honolulu mistake.

      But looking at geography ‘errors’ don’t get me started on the Dutch East Indies and the fake islands they came up with.  :-)

      You’re very welcome for the spot… it’s what happens when you have a bored guy staring at a game board  :lol:

      If you are ever bored again, please do stare at the board again and share your finding :-)

      This map looks great! Looking forward to completion :-)

      Thanks!

      @sjlr1:

      I’ve also noticed that Sydney and Calcutta have the round victory city symbols rather than the square capitals symbols…

      Wow never noticed this before! Thanks for sharing this with the community. I will definitely address this.

    • RE: Crazy Idea for Large Maps?

      Cool idea, but I have three things that I might be worried about besides the protection and overheating already mentioned:

      • screens emit light which can be strain your eyes after hours of play

      • the same light from the screen might make it harder to see the number and colors of chips underneath your units

      • a 55 inch screen is not big enough to play AA 1940 Global, so consider carefully which games your group plays

      So please give it a try using and old screen as Rank Carcass suggested. Looking forward to your “test results”.

      @siredblood:

      This is it, im super happy with this. I decided against border color or anything to do with color specifics, aside from neutrals, which will vary in shades of brown. I thought about it, and aside from the initial setup, borders change round 1, so really not important.

      I’m glad you came up with a solution that you like and that fits your style of map the best. You’re absolutely right about the nation colors having no real game purpose. Although I have to say I like it to easily spot how many Russian home territories the Axis have eaten away. But that’s just me.

      Looking forward to see the total map. The mini map on the right side already gives an impression of the overall look and feel, but nothing beats the real deal :-)

      And what do you think of the ww1 game?

    • RE: Tjoek's 1940 Global Map file and setup charts (Updated May 30th 2018)

      Some good progress lately. I’ve finished retouching all the scratches and other small damages on the boards / scans.

      As I found a way to scan my own boards in good quality I was even able to use my 2nd edition board itself to add the 2nd edition changes to the map. See the two examples below for Western Canada and Mexico (left: original map file from YG, right: 2nd edition changes). Note that using my own scan I was able to regenerate the original artwork on Western Canada and Western United States without visible color differences.

      Next stop: color correcting the visible overlaps between different scans. They are visible in the sea zones. Especially on the Pacific side of the board.

      Stay tuned!

      The texture on the seazones are amazing!

      I agree that it would be nicer to have something else then just a “fill color” on the countries would be best. Considered to try out different stains of brown combined with a distinct texture to distinguish them?

      Nice to see big progress on your map sired! Interesting old pirate look and feel to the map.

      I really like the way the convoy and kamikaze symbols turned out, but I would suggest to play around with brighter colors for the territory names and income values to increase contrast for easy reading

      Looking forward to the next update!
