    • Air Marshal, A Quartermaster General Expansion, on Kickstarter now

I apologize if this is spammy. I know a lot of you A&A players like my game Quartermaster General enough so I felt like it was newsworthy beyond just self-promotion. I can’t post links so you can find out more on our site, grigglinggames.com or on BGG.

There is also a licensed French Version being crowdfunded; I am licensing the game to Asyncron.

      thank you

    • Quartermaster General to debut at Gen Con

      Hi all

I’ve always been a bit of a lurker, but have posted house rules and scenarios in the past. I admit it’s been a while since I’ve posted here (and I clear my cookies so I don’t show up online very often, even if I’m enjoying a discussion….) I quit my day job and started a game company. I’m an old time fan of Axis and Allies and I’ve designed a game that I think will appeal to A&A fans. It’s called Quartermaster General, and its a fast paced game about WWII, and it will release at Gen Con.

It doesn’t seem that I can post links, so I’ll just tell you to google:
      “Quartermaster General Game”

      Tank Meeples!

      thanks

    • RE: Rules Errata

I love this new version. I’ve only had time for one game but looking forward to the new year.

This version is a complete mismatch in quality. It’s half BMW, half Yugo. The boards are awesome - the fold doesn’t bother me. I love the new pieces although I like everyone else wish they had included more Japanese Tac Bombers.

Of all of the things that most disappointed, the number of rules problems is #1 and frankly, least forgivable since from a project planning perspective these should have been well blindtested and then locked, and not subject to manufacturing logistics issues. There were definitely sections where it took some serious work to figure out the designer’s intent. When old AAE changed the cruiser/destroyer bombardment, that was just not that big a deal. Furthermore, that change emerged from the sort of repeated play that might not be possible prior to release. But can you imagine someone showing up at a convention without checking these boards,  a paper copy only and well planned strategy?

Ah well. Perhaps we can appeal to WotC to put a copy of the formal AAP errata in the AAE boxes, and well, not make so many mistakes on AAE.

    • RE: Get rid of the cardboard

Using cardboard counters for permanent installations is fine, except the pieces they included were below AH 1964 standards. I would have preferred something more substantial that would have stacked nicely with chips (or damage tokens) and control markers.

Cardboard AA guns are bad, especially now with built in AA meaning those suckers are going to move around a lot more. I’ve always hated the AA guns in A&A except in Strategic Bombing.

    • RE: Custom Europe Map & Rules

While we have played this version a number of times (maybe about 10), I have a hard time telling if the game is well tested since it is just my wife and I playing, so we don’t think about what we don’t think about.

I’d say the bias is towards a stalemate (no winner at end of 1945). It’s a bit hard to tell since usually one player resigns before then. THe game is definitely close enough that both sides have a good chance of winning (if not perfectly balanced).

I realize I never mention the russian winter in the rules, only on the timeline. I suppose it is obvious enough.

      thanks

    • Custom Europe Map & Rules

      Hello everyone

Some of you may know me vaguely from other boards, but I am at best an infrequent poster elsewhere.

As luck would have it, I was just finished developing a custom Europe map when I heard about the A&A 1940 project. I thought I would finalize my efforts and post them to share, at least until the new version comes out. I’ll also allow myself the conceit that perhaps Larry or someone else takes a peek at these and decides to incorporate them into the new rules for these games.

      http://tinkergnome.com/Tinkergnome/WWII-Europe.zip

This zip contains four files (all PDFs):

      • Rules

      • Setup Charts

      • A multipage PDF for printing the map to tape/glue together

      • A onepage map for quick reference

Many of these rules have been developed over the last 20 years of my experience with game. I try to keep my house rules clean and easy, in the spirit of the game. There are a lot more advanced rules I’ve thought of over time but generally believe that these need to be cut if unnecessary. For example, the entry into the wart of minor neutrals and major powers has gone through a lot of revisions and I ultimately decided on a a timeline with some simple variables. I am currently developing national variant bonuses (6 for each power) but am a long way from completing these. I am also considering changes benefits the defender gets from river/invasion/crossing arrow attacks but am just not satisfied with with what I’ve thought of so far (suggestions welcome). My wife wants me to add a rule so tanks could be carried by transports but then move in the armored breakthrough two spaces away. That’s a big change and I’m still mulling it.

I hope you enjoy and appreciate any positive feedback you have to offer!
