      Question about the half-priced repairs with improved factory tech:

      If I want to repair  3 damage on one IC and 5 damage on another, do I have to pay 4 ipcs for 8 total repairs or do I pay 2 ipcs to repair the three on the first factory and 3 ipcs to repair the 5 on the other (total 2+3=5 ipcs)?  In other words, is rounding done on a per-IC basis or a per-turn basis?

      The rules state “you can remove two damage markers at a time for the cost of 1 IPC (half price).”  and doesn’t state that they have to be removed from same factory, so my assumption is that rounding would be on a per-turn basis, but just thought I’d get clarification.

    • RE: VIU Theory

      @Funcioneta:

      The siberian units (all east of Evenki) are VIU for USSR. They are the only defense soviets have against Japan (don’t count with China and India japanese puppets) until Pacific fleet does something

      Do they really provide much of a defense against Japanese advances?  If japan brings any airpower at all, they are vulnerable.

      To the contrary, if you are using DM’s definition, I would put them in the category of VIUs for the opposite reason.  As japan I love the opportunity to kill them early before they can gain force multiplication by joining the central Russian defenses.  I have found them much less costly to kill out on their own early on if japanese air can be leveraged.

      @Krieghund:

      @Joe:

      Can you bombard a territory from a different seazone than your transports are assaulting from? For example, if the Suez is closed to you, can you transport troops to Trans Jordan from seazone 34, and bombard from seazone 15? My guess is no, however, I’d like to be sure.

      Your guess is correct.  The bombarding ship(s) must be in the same sea zone as the assaulting transport(s).

      Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say “The bombarding ship(s) must be in the same sea zone as at least one assaulting transport(s)”

      I don’t have the link but I recall this being discussed by you at length a while back.

    • RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A

      Based on the rules when mixed planes attack a territory with an AA gun, the shots against different aircraft (i.e., against figs and against bombers) are rolled as separate groups, then casualties are chosen from among those groups.

      Here’s my question: If some, but not all, of the bombers are carrying paratroopers, do all bombers still roll as a single group and then casualties are chosen?  I can’t find any rule citation in the OOB book or the FAQ that would seem to clarify this.

      @Battlingmaxo:

      you may not need that form if you are using abattlemap. the list units option under the view tab gives you a written record of the board as it was saved.

      Or you can just, you know, save the file.

      The rules seem a lot more flexible and common-sense-based than they were at times in the past, so I’ll give it a run.  I’m probably going to have to cut down on my league games even more, but I’ll try to keep the decks clear enough to get through the games in the time limit.

      I guess I need to go look at the tournament forum and figure out how the allies won a majority of games.

      The league numbers are more what I expected overall.

    • RE: My KJF Strategy

      @Frontovik:

      i prefer 42 for KJF
      cause then you can put IC on those 4 IPC islands
      and there, japan is actually beateble
      Russia is also in offense first round, so germans have to withdraw a bit, which gives russia a bit more breath.

      You can’t place US ICs in the pacific (except phi) in '42.  per the official FAQ, the “original controller” of those islands is still UK, even though japan starts the scenario with them.  If us takes them, they are liberated for the british.

    • RE: Closing access to SZ 16 a game winner?

      @Lynxes:

      Germany can’t use territory trade forces to march vs. Russia, as they will be doing if you invade Poland

      On the other hand, hitting NWE doesn’t disrupt supply lines to the eastern front like invading poland can.  Armor can potentially shoot through if held back for NCMs, but any inf retaking poland should get smacked again the next turn so Germany has to use armor as fodder against the russian infs  if it’s trying to hold a position to the east.

    • RE: Game changing idea

      This is just so-o-o-o fraught with issues…

      What if Berlin falls in a fluke attack but is liberated at some point later?  There’d come a point in the game where I’d almost want to leave berlin empty and dare them to take it just to eliminate the eastern front, get a suddenly unthreatened Josef on my side and let Japan concentrate on crushing the americans.

      And the Western allies lose all units in soviet territory? So basically a precondition of any Western allied attack on berlin is that they have to vacate soviet territory or willingly lose those units?

      And what happens if the Soviets liberate berlin?  Is it german?  Are the soviets still axis?  Are the germans now western allies???

      And, and, and……

      The game is just not structured to deal with changing alliances.

      @Craig:

      It didn’t make the OotB rules because of my (and others) dislike for it.  There were others that strongly wanted it.  I didn’t (and still don’t) think that this is the way to fix the SBR rules.

      It doesn’t fit the level of the game, unlike the level of A&A Europe and Pacific.

      Craig

      You are the reason this game is broken ? Man I will smite you 3 times every day. Now I better understand why you are not a playtester for A&A 1942 ed. Totally useless.

      Quite a jump to conclusions without bothering to find out if he suggested a DIFFERENT way to deal with it, Dontcha think?

      BTW, who changed the thread title.  the original one was perfect - it got a whole lot of us to read the topic and (for those who knew about it) to discuss it, it was funny as hell, but it still made sense when you read the question.

      The new title doesn’t even make sense.

      @General:

      The key for me to the allied push is Russia.  If you can keep the pressure off her then you have won the game.

      Thanks everyone.

      When you put it that way, it seems so easy! ;)

      Correct.  Only 1 gets to shoot at incoming planes in a given territory.  But I’d rather it shoot on a 2 than a 1.

    • RE: Question about AA guns

      Yes if you move the german AA to italy, it still preserves the German Tech advantage.  I played a multiplayer game where Japan got radar and shot an AA through the suez to help protect in europe.

      You can also move multiple AA’s around for rockets, however, keep in mind that each territory can only shoot one IC (regardless of how many AA’s are there) and each IC may only be hit by one AA/rocket during a turn.  If germany has 10 AAs, but those rockets can only reach 4 ICs, it can only fire 4 rockets.

      Also keep in mind that since the Rocket fire is part of combat, you can’t fire it and non-combat move the AA on the same turn.  You have to move it into position first, then fire the next turn.

    • RE: 3rd break though chart

      @fanofbond:

      This is what me and my group have come up with
      1.  Only infantry attacking hit on 2

      2.  Destroyers can carry 1 inf

      3. Long range howitzers  (artillery can not engage in combat from a square away no ships can be hit)

      3. Kamikaze

      4. Nuclear Reacters  (ships can move three spaces)

      6. Draft (1 free infantry a turn)

      Rolling a 5 would suck.  :wink:

      interesting that you “tend to have 4 transports” in 1941 japan since you start with 5.  Is there a point where you “typically” sacrifice one?

      I installed 3 plugin packs:  BoltBait’s , Illnab’s, and MadJik’s.  I probably haven’t used 90% of this stuff…

      The alpha mask one is in Illnab’s compilation pack.  It might be the same as alpha mask import thread, I don’t know.  Even if it’s the same, I think these developers have moved to delivering their stuff in these combined packs so I think the compliation pack may be more current.

    • RE: Modules for ABattlemap

      @HolKann:

      Got a question: how did you do that “fading” of the borders of a territory with paint.net?

      It uses a combination of gaussian blur and a technique called Alpha masking.  If you don’t have the alpha mask plugin, get it.  It is way cool.

      1. Created a separate layer that had only the territory/sea-zone borders. I think I used the magic wand on a low tolerance setting and selected a black area with global fill to select all the lines, then pasted it into a new layer. I probably manually cut out the legend. I had to do some cleanup where the lines weren’t quite right and where VC stars had obliterated the black lines, etc.
        I then did some editing and created a layer with just the land borders (mostly just erasing the ocean borders :roll: )

      2. Working in separate layers copied from the land borders layer, I selected the areas inside all the territory borders (magic wand-select in each territory with “union” selection setting) and applied gaussian blurs to them.  I did 3 levels - 4 pixels, 8 pixels and 12 pixels to get a gradual fading away from the borders (see layers “Land border blur 4”, “…8” and “…12”).  By combining the three blur levels this creates a fading black blur inside all the the borders.

      3. using the three blur layers combined with the bg_whiteness layer as a background I saved the file to a JPEG file for use in the next step.

      4. I then used a plugin called an “Alpha Mask” which uses an image to manipulate the “alpha channel” of the pixels.  I don’t really understand what that means other than to know that it allows you to apply a level of transparency to an image based on a “mask” from a jpeg file (the file created in step 3)  I applied the mask to a copy of the base map so that wherever the mask was white, it was transparent and the darker the mask got the more of the image it kept.    This resulted in the Map No Faces-Border 1 and …Border 2 layers.  (I just duplicated the resulting image to get #2 so that the net result would be darker - because they’re mostly transparent, the colors add together)

      5)Then I created a layer from the original map and played with the coloration  - mostly lightening, maybe tweaking the saturation and such here and there (I don’t really remember what I did, mostly trial and error) - to create the Pale and Very Pale backgrounds.  By including the border layers over the paler background it gives the impression of gradual shading.
