    • RE: AAA (Axis and Allies Anonymous)

      Wow, I do not belong here

      I only have 1 copy of AAR, 1 copy of AA42 and one copy of AA50, but damnit if I don’t think about playing Axis and Allies a couple dozen times a day, hell I keep AA42 in my car just in case someone wants to play me while I’m on the road! I may not be hardcore, but I get withdrawls just the same.

    • RE: A&A'42 new and "refreshed" sculpts

      @mig:

      And since you can only build naval units(without building an additional complex) in the black sea (that you can’t leave) makes it even more pointless.

      That is if you are playing with the Dards closed, you can play with them open as well.

    • RE: Why is AA42 being hated by everyone? I just bought a copy. Sigh.

      Wild Bill is right, AA Revised was actualy my first introduction to the game though, but I bought that a week before AA42 came out so instinctively since it was the “new” version to replace the basic revised game I picked that up, mainly because they added the cruiser unit and I wanted to have more flexibility with navy and the extra unit. So right now I’m using AA42 with extra pieces from AAR (extra infantry, tanks, artillery, fighters, bombers and any naval pieces that dont use a new sculpt, chips, control markers, and the dice cause they look better). I’ve introduced all my friends to this game since nobody except for one person has played Axis and Allies, the other person that has played hasnt played since the classic version and doesn’t own a copy themself so its exciting for them to have a group of friends that are interested in playing.

      I found this game to be so much fun that I decided to bite the bullet and purchase a copy of AA50 off of EBay because I know that our group of friends are going to enjoy the bigger setup and my girlfriend especialy is excited that Italy is an additional axis force, before all she liked to do was watch the game but now she is interested in playing as long as she can be Italy lol.

      I haven’t owned an Axis and Allies game for longer than a month so far and I’m already “upgrading” to AA50 because I already want more and want to get the fullest enjoyment out of our group as possible and I want to include my girlfriend into the gaming experience, even though I already bought AAR and AA42 it all still feels like money well spent because not only do I have so many extra pieces to work with now but I feel like I’m contributing to the future success of the franchise for many years to come.

      AA42 I highly recommend to new players to introduce them to the game. It may not be everything that the veteran players are wanting to see in an AA game but it will produce many more future “veterans” who are going to want to get their hands on AAP40 and AAE40 when those finally do get released, or may even go the extra mile and try and find an AA50 for their groups, and for $30US its a steal as opposed to almost $50US that revised was priced at (at least if you were purchasing retail from a Barnes and Noble for instance).

      New players will certainly find enjoyment in this game, especially if strategy games are hard to come by in their area and all they have to play is the various versions of “Risk” out there….I can’t even look at that game anymore now that I’ve discovered Axis and Allies.

    • RE: Naval Battles

      the sub would not be able to “submerge” til after the defender fires, but any casualties from the sub’s “sneak attack” would be removed from the board as they would not be able to fire during the defender’s phase (unless there was a destroyer to negate the sneak attack or the only casualty was one hit to a battleship)

      Defender always chooses casualties btw, so if you have a battleship and a cruiser, and all he had was a sub, he would fire with the sub on the sneak attack…if it hit you chose the battleship taking one hit, if he had no other attackers then he cannot fire during the regular attack phase, then you fired back and hit the sub…sub is destroyed and your pieces would be put back into the naval zone where they came from with no damage because the battleship only took one hit…hope that helped

    • RE: If you already have AA50 and Revised, what's the point of buying AA1942?

      @Imperious:

      set printer to tile it. for some printers its called poster print.

      other than that you print each sheet on 8.5x11 pages on decal paper (about .40 cents each) and lay them on a thin wooden board. its not hard. This technique will involve some cutting

      Hmmm, Staples sells something called “sticker paper”, wonder if thats somewhat the same, I’ll have to do some homework on that, and then after I figure that out it’s a trip to home depot…thanks a bunch IL, I foresee my games getting much more fun with a larger map.

      I took a look at your map IL, its very nice, the only question I have is….how do I print it out to use it in a game?

    • RE: If you already have AA50 and Revised, what's the point of buying AA1942?

      I purchased AA42, Revised was actualy my first purchase but when I found out that target was selling them right now I immediately jumped on the prospect of picking it up, so I have to thank IL for that otherwise I would have never known they had it.

      I’m new to Axis and Allies, always knew the game existed but never really bothered to pick it up and play til now, and let me say I regret that, but glad I found it later than never picking it up at all.

      I bought Revised and played a couple times, when I found out there was going to be a version coming out that had another naval piece (cruiser), I was excited, because that meant more flexibility with naval units, plus, I use my Revised pieces that use the same sculpts as extra pieces (unfortunately Russia doesnt exactly use the same naval sculpts, but I guess they don’t really use a navy too often anyway), plus I use the grey and red chips from Revised in case we ever have too many large stacks sitting in areas, I guess I always like to have extra pieces, especialy in war games.

      Also, I like the new board, I don’t know why, between Revised map and AA42 (and only those two, I’ve seen other maps and I’m sure there are more amazing ones out there but these are the only two I OWN), I like the AA42 map and the inclusion of the National production on the board. It just looks like a real map, the only problem I have is maybe china and russia should have a few borders redone, but I overlook it when I’m playing anyway so it’s not like it detracts from my gaming enjoyment. The only issue I had is that between Revised and AA42, the unit costs and values are on the board instead of the cards…thats what I liked in Revised, because me and my friends are all new players and we’re still learning what everything does, but I guess now I have them all pretty much memorized now and is a slight annoyance for first timers who don’t know what everything does and have to look across the board, veterans wouldn’t be bothered by this I suppose and most veterans own AA50 anyway, too bad they don’t have that version available now though, my Italian GF would jump on the opportunity to play this game as the Italian faction, right now she just watches the games and supports my Germanic ways (though I am Polish myself and avid world war II history and modern european history “fan” so I enjoy playing all factions).

      The dice look…ugly…I don’t like the red, I like the Black/white dice from Revised, call me traditional.

      Battleboard and casualty zone not as “big” as Revised, but honestly, once it gets to the defenders turn to roll, when do you need a casualty zone for the attacker anyway? I don’t see a problem with it, it has every bit of information you need to do a battle.

      This is just coming from someone who has just recently started playing, take it for what it is worth, but I just wanted to say I’m glad I picked up ANY version of this game and thanks again to IL for opening my eyes towards Target, I drove 30 miles to pick up my copy of AA42 because of him.
