He was trying a “radical” new strategy. That is what happens….

I would like to see WWI. The teams can be britain, france,USA/Russia vs. Germany, Austria, and the ottomans. WWI style units and a huge european map! Gallipoli the somme, Verdun, that would make for a great game.

    • RE: Defense of Karelia

whenever i play russia, i always pull back and wait for a counterattack in karelia or the caucus. the way i reckon, it would hurt the germans more if they were forced to defend a newly aquired territory rather than trying to absorb an ineveitable attack.

That was a brutal 20 hours. It showed how difficult it is for Japan to finish off Russia, even when i was making 50 IPC a turn. We should have just stopped at the Economic Victory……

it just does not seem fair if russia can have the initiative agaist germany. it is hard enough on them all ready.

Mac ws a exellent general and a massively popular public figure. He was however a terrible politician, his understanding of the consequenses of his actions seems to have been very limited. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have started WWIII if given the chance.

Harold Alexander; after the war he served as Governor-General of Canada until 1956, and then as Britain’s defense minister until 58’he was made an Earl in 56’ and received the order of merit in 59’:)

i have not seen A&AP but i wish they gave all the countries different pieces. Like, britain needs a cromwell or Matilda. The US should have gotten mustangs instead of lightnings, it is Europe after all. Also, Russia should get its own crappy ships instead of stealing britain’s. Finally, Stukas are cool, but to represent fighters? Fw190s all the way!

    • RE: Defense of Karelia

It was completely straight up, 3rd edition A&A with no Russian first attack. I did not need my airforce and used it to kill all ships in the Atlantic. I was still trasporting 2 inf a turn to africa, and also managed to kill the troops in egypt. He did purchase badly however, he bought all tanks with russia, and built a pacific navy to kill japan. I guess that was it, he just was doing everything that he should not. Brutal. Taking england was icing on the cake.

Never mentioned is my personal favorite, Archibald Wavell. He penned the exellent book, Generals and Generalship and was the primary architech of the excellent progress Monty made latter in North Africa.
I think honorable mention should go to Bill Slim and Vinegar Joe Stillwell, both helped turn the Burma campaign from utter disaster into an impressive victory.

    • Defense of Karelia

I recently played a game against a friend who threw every russian unit except for 3 Inf into Karelia on the first turn. My germans attacked, killed everything in karelia(including the russian airforce) and took russia on the second turn. (i also got lucky with a unnoticed trasport and took england on turn 3). This got me thinking, can russia ever defend karelia agaist a determined german attack? is it simply better for russia to look for a good counter-attack or did my buddy do somthing wrong that i am not seeing? i would love to hear some theories…

    • RE: Gavin and All

Montgomery an idiot?!?! Bite your tongue, friend! He was only one of the great generals at the disposal of the British Empire! All i have to say about that is look who ultimately won in north africa! Rommel could not took Tobruk in a timely manner and frequently overstretched his supply lines. Flashy generalship will usually lead to defeat.

    • RE: England defend Africa???

It is typicly difficult to leave the destruction of the German fleet and the defense of africa up to Britain if they are also trying to build a new fleet in the atlantic, a factory in india and infantry to ship to europe. Most of the African defense is up to the Americans; a south african IC is a poor investment.
