    • RE: Russian Openings and AA Online

      @aardvarkpepper The way I see it, and the wins are beginning to confirm, West Russia stack is the highest percentage first turn move for Russia. Germany might go a myriad of different ways, they can try to buy transports and go for GB. They can focus heavily on Africa, or they could wait for infantry fodder to reach Western Russia after a first turn buy. They could also risk everything by going all in to West Russia. To do so means they could potentially lose(more often than not) and even if they do not, they have a significantly weaker Air Force. I’ve gotten comfortable playing at the edge of death as Russia, the times where West Russia gets steamrolled, there is still a path to fighter support via Iceland, still fighters to fly in from India and the UK fleet will be pressuring Germany, much sooner with much of the German Air Force destroyed. Does it ever backfire? Yes, but much less frequently than the Ukraine gamble, which is pure RNG.

      @Panther said in German Carrier SZ 15:

      @theskeindhu Please clarify wihich game you are actually talking about.
      This category is about the boardgame - while we have a seperate one for the online game as mentioned in this sticky:
      https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/topic/35794/axis-allies-1942-online-has-its-own-dedicated-forum-category

      In case this topic is about the boargame - fine. If not, I will move it to the correct category.
      Thank you.

      I deleted the thread, the answer was simple and answered sufficiently. Not sure why the comments remain with the original deleted, but feel free to get rid of the entire thing.

      @aardvarkpepper Strafes and bombardments, two reasons to occasionally buy a Battleship. I use strafes frequently, specifically on battles I don’t actually want to win because the counter attack would destroy me. For such a battleship is superior. People get in echo chambers and repeat the same nonsense and think, because everyone says it, it must be true. Fact is, bombardments of 4 are actually quite useful, having a Battleship is like having a bomber, it’s not ideal for every situation, but it hits hard when used right.

      @Imperious-Leader and I’m interested in doing the same with a gambit into Ukraine which at best leaves irreplaceable tanks exposed. West Russia doom stack is the best opening move I’ve found, my initial post was based on frustration from an anomaly, Germany got extremely lucky. Since then the move has paid off even against an all in German push.

      @Imperious-Leader I’m referring to going all in, Axis and Allies online, Russia turn 1 with 20 Units all to West Russia. Then sending the fighters on defensive missions to return R2. The unstoppable counter to this is Germany going all in West Russia T1. Should they have good fortune, they can take Russia out of the game, I’ve seen it go both ways, usually ends horribly for Germany, but when lucky it ends the game.

      @aardvarkpepper Is this forum so active that you can be a dick? This is the most comprehensive thread on Russian openings, which is specifically my discussion, concerning stacking West Russia, enjoy your elitist attitude.

      @aardvarkpepper Yea, sorry, should have clarified, I was referring to Larry Harris Gen 3, Axis and Allies online. I’ve been stacking West Russia turn 1 with everything minus fighters which obviously can’t land there first turn. 1 to Egypt, 1 to Szechwan along with one infantry. This has been my tactic and the most consistently successful, since I got tired of gambling a strafe on Ukraine and getting major League screwed enough times, including losing a fighter first round that I decided it wasn’t worth placing the entire fate of the game on round 1 luck. Germany has about 20% success rate rushing a West Russia against my stack R1. This, IMO is because AA isn’t working as intended, a known glitch. The odds improve if I have 6 dice rolling for 1’s and actually take out aircraft.

      @DoManMacgee Ok, that makes sense. So assume India falls round 3 and just focus on Germany most of the IPC’s.

      @Imperious-Leader Maybe I’m just unlucky, but in MP I’m losing too much in the first roll, too consistently to make it worth it. Basically puts the entire game on that one move, that’s not my style.

      Re: All the Russian Openings for Beginners

      I took a hiatus and recently returned. I can’t win at all as the Allies. The most recent game I went conservative and stacked everything first turn on West Russia. Germany ignored the UK fleet and brought everything in to West Russia. They barely won and took Moscow round 3. I’m not a statistics guy, but is this a high probability attack? I lost 3 infantry opening attack, both AA Guns and every man was stacked West Russia.

      @Imperious-Leader

      The point for Germany being that with 2 Bombers and the luck to never lose one, and 2-3 from Japan, they can completely destroy Russia’s income. This takes away any opportunity to counter strike, or build a big stack on West Russia as with both Japan and Germany knocking at the door of Moscow and no money, they crumble fast.

      @Imperious-Leader

      I think there is some confusion, I don’t strategic bomb, I was speaking of the Axis strategy to hit Russia from G1 on with Bombers from Japan and Germany. This makes Russia even more cash strapped and can significantly speed their downfall. It’s not a tactic I deploy, it’s one I’ve struggled to counter.

      @DoManMacgee

      This worked rather brilliantly on the first go, mostly due to luck. Beat Ukraine with 3 tanks left, then proceeded to win on Sz 37 with 1 sub a Carrier and 2 fighters left lol. That was pure luck. He then attacked the USA Pacific fleet, leaving me enough to take out both the Carrier and Cruiser there with the USA, as well as the battleship two destroyers and transport in Sz 61 UK2, brought in 2 fighters to do so from India. This left him with no fleet worth mentioning. I guess I could go kjf, but think I’ll use the extra time in India to really push Germany.

    • RE: All the Russian openings: For Begginers

      I have had limited success with the Ukraine attack, have to go all in though, strafe does no good imo. The thing that I can’t beat is heavy industrial bombing raids from both Germany and Japan as early as G1. This destroys Russia fast and they appear to never lose a bomber. Some losses are due to mistakes on my part, purchases, overaggressive play etc. Most seem to just be the result of the fact that Russia needs a bit of luck turn one, without that the game is instantly over. Fighters for sure with the UK, but I find myself gaining naval superiority to get the Brits going with the US, then turning to the Pacific and pressuring Japan. If not, Japan will waltz through India and Moscow while Germany builds 10 men a turn and trades comfortably with the UK and Russia. US turn one purchase, 1 CV, 3 destroyers. Does anyone have a better combo? I link up with whatever remains from the UK fleet in Morocco turn 2 then keep my USA fleet attached to wherever the UK fleet goes.

    • UK to 10 IPC's?

      Starting to gain some traction winning as the Allies, however, I think a mild boost to the UK would balance things significantly. The ability to fill 5 transports would give much more punch to the UK. Considering India will almost always fall by at the latest, round 5 against a good Japan player, the UK is in a position where they are unable to do anything other than buy 8 units to fill their transports. Anything else is sub optimal, to put pressure on Germany. Thoughts? Currently Germany can sit in a holding pattern, if they bought well and wait for Japan to get to Moscow, they can laugh at any 8 man landing party, assuming they invested in an Air Force, flexing to where the party lands, wiping them out and moving fighters back into attacking positions, or to defend the capital if needed. The UK can’t even buy bombers, extra ships etc, without detracting from getting boots on the ground. 10 production or even 11 would give the UK the ability to put more troops on the ground, or perhaps buy a defensive or offensive piece per turn to gain some ground. Against inferior competition, this doesn’t matter, half the time they leave Berlin underprotected, it’s mainly against good Axis players where this will give the UK a fighting chance to be relevant.

    • RE: UK opening

      @DoManMacgee I had what I considered a brilliant move lol. Straight at their fleet, had them on the ropes, destroyed and took their Industrial hub in Manchuria. But they literally sent one man and all Airforce to destroy my little landing party, I briefly considered chaining fighters to defend from the USA, but realized that was pointless. The end result in my outmaneuvering their fleet, landlocking them and taking a key piece of terrain resulted in fuck all because I needed to keep outspending their massive Airforce to maintain my fleet.

      The UK opening is garbage, tried and succeeded, but it’s does nothing other than distract ultimately leaving India weaker, though Japan is also much weaker as well…

    • RE: UK opening

      Yea, tracking. One more thing I’ve noticed. The Japanese fleet standoff is probably needed, but unless the other player is not paying attention, it’s nothing more than a distraction. Ultimately it takes too long to get into any kinda position to threaten and to actually take islands separated the fleet from reinforcements. I’ve gone right at their fleet with success, but even with destroying their fleet that late in the game, it’s still a careful dance to keep mine together and not get too extended and get picked off. On the plus side, they must be solely focused on me, not Moscow. The games I’ve lost lately, have usually involved heavy strategic bombing, and bomber use, this becomes incredibly frustrating with a country like Russia, or England, who barely have any money and facing chain bombers from Japan and Germany cannot do much in the way of offensive operations.
